Buying socks and hosiery in Bangladesh
A sock is knitted as one tube on a circular sock machine, then closed at the toe, shaped on heated forms (boarding) and paired. Importers, retailers and sports brands order crew, ankle, sports and kids' socks, usually in multi-packs, and shops and companies in Bangladesh buy them for retail and staff kits. What a socks manufacturer in Bangladesh needs to quote
- Yarn blend
- Fibres and percentages, for example 80% combed cotton, 17% nylon, 3% elastane, and yarn count. Combed cotton is smoother and pills less than carded cotton.
- Needle count and cylinder
- Needles around the cylinder and its diameter in inches, for example 144 or 168 needles. More needles on the same cylinder knit a finer, thinner sock and need finer yarn.
- Weight per pair
- Finished grams for a named size, or per dozen pairs, with a tolerance. Yarn is bought by weight, so this number makes quotes comparable.
- Sizes
- The shoe sizes each sock size covers, for example EU 39 to 42 and 43 to 46, and the split per size. A sock that covers too many sizes fits none well.
- Heel, toe and cuff
- Heel type, toe closing (linked for a flat seam, or machine-sewn with a thicker ridge) and cuff: rib, comfort or elastic top, measured relaxed and stretched.
- Design and colours
- Jacquard pattern or logo with its colours, since each colour needs a yarn feed and slows knitting. Stock yarn colours keep minimums lower than yarn dyed to your shade.
Tests, labels and rules for socks
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100
- Product class II for adult socks worn against the skin and class I for baby socks up to 36 months. Check the number, class and expiry with the issuer.
- ISO 12947 (Martindale abrasion)
- Rubs until the fabric wears through, run on heel and sole fabric to predict holes. Set a minimum for sports and work socks.
- Regulation (EU) 2017/745
- The EU Medical Device Regulation. Compression hosiery sold with a medical claim is a medical device; sports compression without one stays outside it, so keep medical wording off packs.
- CPSIA (US children's socks)
- Lead tests at a CPSC-accepted lab on grip prints and other non-textile parts, a Children's Product Certificate and tracking labels; plain textiles are exempt from lead testing.
- Regulation (EU) 1007/2011
- Fibre composition labelling for the EU, elastane included. Test the blend before labels and header cards are printed.
Lead times and delivery
Typical ranges: a first sample takes one to two weeks once the design is final, longer for a new jacquard. Bulk often runs 30 to 60 days from sample approval when the yarn colours are in stock; yarn dyed to your shade, many colours per design, compression testing and printed packs push it longer. Buying socks and hosiery for export
For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) per pair or per pack, or FCA Dhaka for air freight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Socks, tights and compression hosiery fall under HS heading 6115, with type and fibre setting the subheading. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, origin paperwork (a REX statement for EU GSP, UK DCTS), test reports and the final inspection report, made on retail packs in their final packing with barcodes scanned.
Questions buyers ask
What does needle count mean for socks?
It is the number of needles around the knitting cylinder. More needles on the same cylinder knit more loops per round: a finer, thinner sock with sharper patterns, suited to dress socks, that knits slower and costs more. Fewer needles give a thicker casual, sports or work sock.
Linked or machine-sewn toe: does it matter?
Yes, for comfort and price. A linked toe joins the last loops into a flat seam you barely feel; a machine-sewn toe leaves a thicker ridge that can rub, and costs less. Sports socks and better ranges usually use linked toes. State the method, because quotes often differ on it.
What is the minimum order for custom socks?
It is set per design and colour. With stock yarn colours, factories often accept a few hundred to a few thousand pairs per design; yarn dyed to your shade needs more, and a knitted-in logo needs its own programming and sample. The quote states each minimum.
What mistakes do first-time sock buyers make?
Comparing prices per pair without the weight or needle count. Choosing 100% cotton for sports socks, which stay wet and lose shape. Letting one size cover too many shoe sizes. And approving a logo on screen, when a knitted-in logo loses fine detail.
Why do socks lose their stretch?
Usually because the elastane in the cuff or leg is too little or poorly covered, or has been damaged by hot washing and drying. Specify covered elastane, a cuff stretch and recovery check after a set number of washes, and a care label that suits the fibre.
How soon will I hear back about socks and hosiery?
