Buying jackets and outerwear in Bangladesh

A jacket combines shell, lining, filling, zips, seam tape and finishes, each with its own supplier and lead time, and much technical shell fabric is imported. Importers and brands buy padded jackets, parkas and rainwear for autumn and winter; companies at home order staff rain jackets. Not every jacket manufacturer in Bangladesh runs quilting, down filling, seam taping and bonding, so the build decides the unit.

Jackets and outerwear we source

Padded jackets

Quilted or baffled jackets filled with polyester wadding, stated in grams per square metre, or down, stated by fill power, down-to-feather ratio and fill weight per size. Down needs a down-proof shell; ask for a wash test for clumping and leakage.

Parkas

Longer hooded winter coats with heavier fill, a storm flap, two-way zip and often a detachable faux fur trim. More fabric, fill and trims per piece raise the price; children's parkas must meet the drawstring rules of EN 14682.

Windbreakers

Light nylon or polyester shells, unlined or mesh-lined, often packable into a pocket. A durable water repellent (DWR) finish sheds showers but is not waterproof; many buyers now ask for a finish free of PFAS.

Rain jackets

Waterproof shells with a PU coating or laminated membrane and taped or welded seams (a waterproof fabric still leaks at stitch holes). State hydrostatic head to ISO 811 and breathability as Ret to ISO 11092.

Fleece jackets

Full-zip or half-zip jackets in brushed polyester fleece stated in GSM, often from recycled polyester with GRS certification. It is warm and quick-drying but stops neither wind nor rain; ask for an anti-pill finish and a pilling grade to ISO 12945-2.

Denim jackets

Trucker-style jackets in rigid or stretch denim, washed like jeans. The wash sets shade and much of the cost; state denim weight in oz and a shade band, and ask for button pull tests after washing and nickel release results for EU-bound buttons.

What to specify to a jacket manufacturer in Bangladesh

Shell and lining
Fibre, construction (taffeta, ripstop, twill) and weight in grams per square metre, plus coating or laminate and the lining. Technical shells are often imported, so they set the timeline.
Waterproof and breathability targets
Hydrostatic head in mm (ISO 811), new and after a stated number of washes, water vapour resistance Ret (ISO 11092), and the seam build: taped, welded or sewn.
Filling
Wadding weight in grams per square metre by body zone, or down by fill power, down-to-feather ratio and grams per size. Fill weight per size is where quotes differ most.
Construction
Sewn-through quilting (stitched lines, lighter and lower in cost) or baffles (fabric walls that keep filling even), fixed or detachable hood, and a storm flap over the zip.
Zips, snaps and cords
Zip size and type (coil, moulded, water-resistant), one-way or two-way, pullers, snaps, toggles and cord stoppers; no hood or neck drawstrings on children's styles.
Heat, humidity and packing
PU coatings can break down (hydrolyse) in long hot, humid storage; ask for a hydrolysis-resistant coating if stock will wait. Say whether jackets may be compression-packed, since they ship by volume.

Performance tests and standards for jackets

ISO 811 and ISO 4920
Hydrostatic head and spray rating: waterproofness and surface water repellency. Test new and after washing, because both fall with use.
ISO 11092 and EN 343
Water vapour resistance (Ret) on a sweating guarded hotplate, the usual breathability figure; EN 343 classes protective rainwear for water penetration and breathability when rainwear is sold as protective equipment.
RDS and IDFB test methods
Responsible Down Standard, with a transaction certificate per shipment; fill power, down content and cleanliness tested to International Down and Feather Bureau methods on your down lot.
EN 14682, ASTM F1816 and 16 CFR 1120
Cords and drawstrings on children's outerwear: no hood or neck drawstrings for young children and limits at waist and hem. The US treats non-conforming drawstrings on children's upper outerwear as a substantial product hazard.
GRS and EN 1811
Global Recycled Standard for recycled polyester, with a transaction certificate per shipment; EN 1811 nickel release for buttons and rivets in skin contact, limited under REACH.

What moves the price of a jacket

  • Filling: down costs far more than polyester wadding, and fill power and grams per size move the price further.
  • Shell and lining: membrane laminates, coatings, ripstop, PFAS-free finishes and recycled fabrics cost more than plain taffeta.
  • Construction: baffles, fully taped or welded seams, bonded pockets and detachable hoods add machine time and materials.
  • Trims: two-way and water-resistant zips, snaps, toggles, faux fur and reflective parts are priced one by one.
  • Colours, tests and freight: each colour carries a fabric minimum, tests cost per fabric, and bulky jackets ship by volume.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: a first sample takes two to four weeks, longer when shell or membrane fabric is sampled from abroad. Bulk usually runs 60 to 90 days on local fleece or denim and 90 to 120 days with imported shell fabric, trims and down, which are booked and tested before cutting. Winter programmes book early. Buying jackets and outerwear for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), or FCA Dhaka for air freight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Jackets ship by volume, so the quote states pieces per carton. Documents: commercial invoice stating shell fibre and knitted or woven, which sets the HS chapter, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, origin paperwork (a REX statement for EU GSP, UK DCTS), fabric and down test reports, RDS or GRS transaction certificates where claimed, and the final inspection report.

Questions buyers ask

Down or polyester wadding for a padded jacket?

Down gives more warmth for its weight and packs small, but costs more, needs a down-proof shell and loses loft when wet. Polyester wadding costs less, keeps some warmth when damp and washes easily, and suits most everyday and children's jackets. State fill weight per size either way.

What does fill power mean?

The volume a set weight of down fills, tested to IDFB methods and quoted as a number such as 600. Higher fill power means less down for the same warmth, but it says nothing about how much down is inside, so ask for fill power and grams of filling per jacket.

What hydrostatic head does a rain jacket need?

It depends on use. Hydrostatic head to ISO 811 is the water pressure the fabric holds before it leaks, and outdoor and workwear buyers set much higher values than fashion rainwear. Taped seams matter as much as the fabric, and the figure drops after washing, so set a value new and after a stated number of washes.

What is the minimum order for jackets?

It is set per style and colour. On stock shell fabric and wadding, factories often accept a few hundred to a thousand pieces per colour; fabric dyed or coated to order, custom zips and down usually need more. The quote states each minimum.

Can you supply rain jackets for staff in Bangladesh?

Yes. Tell us headcount by size, colour, logo and use, for example site staff on motorbikes or security guards. We suggest a coated or membrane fabric with taped seams and reflective strips where staff work near traffic, and deliver packed per person or branch with a VAT invoice.

How soon will I hear back about jackets and outerwear?
