Buying jute yarn and twine in Bangladesh
Jute yarn is spun from Tossa and white jute fibre into hessian, sacking and carpet backing counts, and plied into twine and rope, mostly in mills around Narayanganj and Khulna. Weaving mills, carpet makers and rope makers abroad buy it, and local sack and cloth weavers buy it as a second source. What to tell a jute yarn manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Count in pounds per spyndle
- Pounds per spyndle of 14,400 yards, so a higher number is coarser; 1 lb per spyndle is about 34.5 tex. State the count with a tolerance and the ply.
- Twist and ply
- Twists per inch, S or Z direction, and ply twist for plied yarn and twine. Too little twist sheds fibre; too much makes the yarn hard and prone to snarling.
- Fibre grade
- Tossa or white jute and the grade mix, including any share of cuttings or mesta. Lower grades are cheaper but weaker and darker, so put the mix in writing.
- Batching oil and odour
- Jute is softened with oil before spinning. Mineral oil is standard; yarn for food sacks needs hydrocarbon-free vegetable oil to IJO 98/01, and retail twine needs a smell check.
- Strength and moisture
- Breaking load of yarn, twine or rope and count variation, with the test method. Jute's standard moisture regain is 13.75%; monsoon humidity pushes yarn above it, so agree a limit and a test at loading.
- Colour and finish
- Natural, bleached or dyed, and polished or unpolished for twine. Natural colour varies by lot, so approve a range on samples; for dyed yarn, ask for rubbing fastness (ISO 105-X12).
- Package and packing
- Spools, cops, cones or balls and their weight, in bales, bags or cartons marked with count, lot and net weight. Spools must fit your machines; pressed bales cut freight volume.
Standards and paperwork for jute yarn and rope
- IJO Standard 98/01
- The International Jute Organisation standard for food-grade jute, batched with hydrocarbon-free vegetable oil. Cocoa, coffee and food sack buyers ask for a report on the lot.
- ISO 2060 and ISO 2062
- Yarn count by the skein method and single-end breaking force. Ask for results on conditioned samples from your lot, with the lab named.
- ISO 1969 and ISO 2307
- ISO 1969 specifies polyethylene fibre ropes, and ISO 2307 gives test methods for rope properties such as breaking force. Ask for the breaking load of your rope size.
- ERC and certificate of origin
- The ERC issued by the CCI&E, current and in the mill's name on the invoice, and a certificate of origin for every shipment; for EU GSP, a REX statement on origin.
Lead times and delivery
Typical ranges: standard hessian and sacking counts from running production usually ship in two to four weeks. Special counts, carpet backing, food-grade, dyed or bleached yarn, polished twine and made-to-order rope usually take four to six weeks after sample approval. Fibre is tighter before the new crop arrives from about July, and Eid holidays pause mills. Roptan confirms the dates in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver bales, bags or cartons by covered truck to your weaving mill, carpet unit, bag maker or warehouse in Narayanganj, Dhaka, Khulna, Chattogram or elsewhere, kept off wet floors, with the packing list, the lot test report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Damp or short-weight bales are raised with Roptan, not the mill.
Buying jute yarn and twine for export
For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) or FOB Mongla, near the Khulna mills, in bales or cartons with desiccants against container damp, or CFR to your port. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list with lot numbers and net weights, bill of lading, certificate of origin, a count, strength and moisture report per lot, the IJO 98/01 report for food-grade yarn, and a fumigation or phytosanitary certificate where your market asks. A surveyor can check count, moisture and bale weights before loading. Payment is commonly by letter of credit at sight.
Questions buyers ask
What does 8 lb jute yarn mean?
It is the count: one spyndle, 14,400 yards, of that yarn weighs 8 pounds, about 276 tex. A higher number means a heavier, coarser yarn, the other way from cotton counts. State the tolerance and whether it is single or plied, so quotes compare like for like.
What is the difference between hessian, sacking and carpet backing yarn?
Fibre grade, count and evenness. Hessian yarn is finer, for plain cloth and bags. Sacking yarn is heavier and uses lower grades and cuttings, for strong sacks. Carpet backing yarn is even and clean, for carpet mills. Tell us the end use and we match the yarn.
Can jute yarn be made food-grade?
Yes. Food-grade yarn is spun with hydrocarbon-free vegetable batching oil to IJO Standard 98/01 instead of mineral oil, and it costs more. Ask for a test report on your lot; we check that food-grade lots are stored apart from mineral-oil yarn.
What is the minimum order for jute yarn?
For export, usually one full container per yarn type, since mills set up by count and grade; some accept two counts in one container. Retail twine and rope can start lower, and local buyers can take smaller lots from stock. We state the minimum in the quote.
When should I choose polyethylene rope over jute rope?
Choose polyethylene for anything wet or outdoors for long: it does not rot, it floats, and a UV stabiliser extends its life, so it suits fishing, marine and farm work. Choose jute for packing, decoration, gardening and crafts, where grip, a natural look and biodegradability matter.
How soon will I hear back about jute yarn and twine?
