Buying women's wear in Bangladesh

Women's wear is a fashion product: more styles, shorter runs and tighter delivery windows than basics, often in fluid fabrics such as printed viscose, georgette, crepe and satin that can shrink and slip at the seams. Importers, retailers and online brands order seasonal drops, and fashion brands in Dhaka buy for their own shops. Much woven fashion fabric is imported, so a women's wear manufacturer in Bangladesh plans the calendar around fabric.

Dresses

Shift, wrap, shirt, slip and maxi dresses in viscose, crepe, cotton or jersey. Jersey forgives small fit errors; bias-cut and wrap styles need fit approval in the actual fabric.

Blouses and tops

Blouses in georgette, crepe, satin, voile or cotton poplin, and jersey tops. Sheer fabrics show every seam, so they need French or narrow seams, and slippery ones a seam slippage test so seams do not pull open.

Skirts

A-line, pencil, pleated and midi skirts, woven or knit. Permanent pleats are heat-set and need polyester or a polyester-rich blend; pleats in viscose or cotton fall out in the wash. State waist, hip and length by size.

Women's trousers

Tailored, wide-leg, cigarette and stretch trousers in suiting, twill, crepe or ponte jersey. Fit at rise and hip is the usual problem, so approve a size set, not one sample. Woven stretch fabrics need recovery tested, for example to ASTM D3107, or knees bag.

Suits and co-ords

Blazer and trouser suits, and matching top-and-bottom co-ords. Cut both pieces from one fabric lot so shades match on the rail, and say whether they sell as sets or as separates by size.

Jumpsuits

A bodice and trousers in one piece, in viscose, linen blends, denim or jersey. Body length from shoulder to crotch decides comfort, so a small grading error spoils the whole garment. Check the torso on every size of the size set.

What to send a women's wear manufacturer in Bangladesh

Size chart and grading
Your chart with body measurements, the base size, grade rules and the size ratio per colour. Size numbers differ between the UK, EU and US, and even between European countries.
Fabric, handle and drape
Composition, weave or knit, GSM and finish, with handle and drape approved on a swatch. Viscose shrinks and weakens when wet, so ask for pre-shrunk fabric and a wash test before cutting.
Print and placement
Print method, repeat size, placement on each panel and where stripes, checks or motifs must match at seams. Approve a strike-off, a printed piece of your fabric, before bulk.
Seams for light fabrics
French or narrow seams for sheer fabrics, and minimum seam slippage and strength values for satin, chiffon and light viscose at armholes and side seams.
Linings and interlinings
Lining fibre (viscose, cupro or polyester) and where fusing, a glued stiffener, goes: collars, cuffs, fronts, waistbands. Poor fusing bubbles after washing, a common cause of returns.
Trims and embellishment
Invisible or metal zips, buttons by ligne, hooks and belts; embroidery, lace, beads or sequins with position and an approval sample. Heavy trims on light fabric need a backing.

Fabric tests and labels for women's wear

ISO 13936 and ISO 13935-2
Seam slippage in woven fabrics, and seam strength by the grab method. Light, slippery fabrics fail here first, so set values before bulk fabric is bought.
16 CFR 1610 (US flammability)
Plain fabrics of 2.6 oz per square yard (about 88 GSM) or more, and fabrics wholly of polyester, nylon, wool and some other fibres, are exempt from testing; lighter cotton and viscose are not.
ISO 3758 and ISO 3175
Care symbols, and professional dry cleaning and wet cleaning tests for lined dresses, blazers and fused parts. The US care labelling rule (16 CFR 423) requires care instructions; base them on a garment test.
Regulation (EU) 1007/2011
Fibre names and percentages on EU labels; the US has its own fibre labelling law, enforced by the FTC. Test blends such as viscose-elastane before labels are printed.

What moves the price of women's wear

  • Fabric: silk, linen, cupro and printed viscose cost more than plain polyester, and imported fabric adds cost and weeks.
  • Print: custom and placement prints cost more than stock prints or solids, and each print needs its own strike-off.
  • Style detail: linings, pleats, smocking, frills, bias cuts and invisible zips each add fabric or time.
  • Matching and embellishment: matched checks and motifs use more fabric; embroidery, beading and sequins add cost and rework risk.
  • Run length and packing: short runs across many styles cost more per piece, and hanging garments cost more to ship.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: a first fit sample takes about two weeks, a size set one to two weeks more, and a strike-off for a custom print two to three weeks. Bulk usually runs 60 to 90 days from fabric and fit approval: stock fabric at the shorter end, imported or custom-printed fabric and embellishment at the longer end. Buying women's wear for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), or FCA Dhaka for air freight of fashion drops from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Knitted and woven styles fall under HS chapters 61 and 62, with heading and subheading set by garment and fibre. Garments on hangers need hanging cartons or a hanging container, booked ahead. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, origin paperwork (a REX statement for EU GSP, UK DCTS), test reports and the final inspection report.

Questions buyers ask

Why do viscose dresses shrink or split at the seams?

Because viscose loses strength when wet, shrinks unless the fabric is pre-shrunk, and loose weaves slip at seams. Set shrinkage limits after the care-label wash, test seam slippage to ISO 13936 on the approved fabric, and use a closer weave or a seam finish that spreads the load. We check both before bulk fabric is cut.

Can you handle small runs across many styles?

Yes, through units set up for fashion runs. Minimums are set per style and colour, often a few hundred pieces on stock fabric; custom prints and dyed-to-order fabric carry the mill's own minimum per print or colour, so styles that share a fabric help. The quote shows each minimum.

How do you check fit before bulk?

In rounds: a fit sample in the base size against your measurements, then a size set in every size to check grading, then a pre-production sample in bulk fabric and trims, sealed as the reference for inspection. Each round usually takes one to two weeks, so plan them into the calendar.

Digital or screen print: which is right for our order?

Digital printing suits short runs, many colours and photographic designs, with no screens to make. Rotary screen printing costs less per metre at volume but needs a screen per colour and a larger fabric minimum. Where your quantity sits near the crossover, we price both.

What mistakes do first-time women's wear buyers make?

Approving the fit in one size only. Choosing a viscose print without a wash test, then finding the dress shrinks. Ordering many colours in tiny quantities, which raises the price. Skipping the strike-off, so printed colours differ from the screen. And sending another brand's print to copy, which can infringe its rights.

How soon will I hear back about women's wear?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
