Buying sneakers and sports shoes in Bangladesh

A sneaker is a textile or synthetic upper on a rubber, EVA or PU sole, joined by heat (vulcanised) or by glue (cemented). Importers, brands and online retailers buy them in colourways across size runs, and shops in Dhaka and Chattogram stock canvas school shoes. For a sneaker manufacturer in Bangladesh, the sole mould is often the main one-time cost, so many orders start from an existing sole.

Canvas sneakers

Cotton canvas uppers with a rubber sole, foxing tape (the rubber strip round the edge) and toe cap, cured together by heat. State canvas weight and colour, eyelets and insole, and ask for sole bond and foxing adhesion results, since foxing lifts on weak bonds.

Knit sneakers

Uppers knitted in one piece from polyester yarn, often recycled, light and breathable, on EVA or rubber soles. Knitting needs specialised machines, so ask whether the seller knits in-house or names its knitter, and how colour is matched between batches.

Running shoes

Engineered mesh uppers on a cushioning EVA or PU midsole, with rubber where the outsole wears, joined by cementing. State weight per shoe in a named size, heel-to-toe drop in mm (the height difference between heel and forefoot), midsole hardness and outsole abrasion.

Slip-ons

Laceless canvas, knit or synthetic shoes held by elastic side gores or a stretch collar, on vulcanised or cemented soles. With no lace to adjust, fit approval matters more, and the elastic must recover after wear and washing, so ask for a recovery check.

Espadrilles

Canvas uppers stitched to a braided jute rope sole, usually with a thin rubber layer underneath for grip and wear. Jute is grown and spun in Bangladesh. It swells and can grow mould when damp, so set a moisture check at packing and silica gel in the box.

Kids' sneakers

Light, flexible soles, hook-and-loop straps or elastic laces and toe bumpers, across a wide size run by foot length. US children's shoes need CPSIA lead tests on coatings and non-textile parts; for the EU, test rubber parts for PAHs.

How to brief a sneaker manufacturer in Bangladesh

Sole: stock or new
A sole from the seller's range in your colour and logo, or your own design, which needs a mould in every size.
Construction
Vulcanised or cemented, and board-lasted or slip-lasted (the upper stitched to a fabric sock). The construction decides which units can quote.
Upper materials
Canvas weight and composition, knit yarn, mesh, synthetic or leather overlays, lining and collar foam thickness in mm, by supplier code and colour for each colourway.
Last and size run
Size system (EU, UK or US), run and half sizes, for example EU 36 to 46, with pairs per size. Running shoes need a last with your toe spring and drop.
Midsole and outsole
Foam type and hardness, outsole rubber with its Shore A hardness, pattern and colour. Name a reference shoe if you cannot give a number.
Tests and chemical limits
Pass values for sole adhesion, flex and outsole abrasion, and your restricted substances list, including PAHs in rubber and phthalates in PVC parts for the EU.
Heat, humidity and packing
Cemented soles need adhesives and curing that suit hot, humid conditions, so test sole bond on bulk pairs. Canvas and jute take up moisture: silica gel in every box.

Tests and rules for sneakers

ISO 17708 and ISO 17707
Whole-shoe sole adhesion and outsole flex resistance, the two tests that predict soles peeling or cracking. Ask for results on bulk pairs, not only the sample.
ISO 4649
Abrasion resistance of rubber on a rotating drum, reported as volume loss: the common check on outsole wear. State the maximum volume loss you accept.
REACH Annex XVII
For the EU: PAHs in rubber and plastic parts in skin contact (entry 50), phthalates in plasticised PVC parts (entry 51), and chromium VI in any leather trim (entry 47).
Directive 94/11/EC
EU labelling of footwear materials by pictograms or words for the upper, the lining and sock, and the outer sole.
CPSIA (US children's shoes)
Lead limits of 100 ppm in accessible materials and 90 ppm in paint and coatings, tests at a CPSC-accepted lab, a Children's Product Certificate and tracking labels.

What moves the price of a sneaker

  • Sole: a new mould in every size costs far more up front than an existing sole from the seller's range.
  • Construction: vulcanised canvas shoes use fewer parts; cemented running shoes add midsoles, overlays and steps.
  • Upper: knit and engineered mesh cost more than plain canvas, and suede or leather overlays add more.
  • Colourways: each needs matched materials, an approval sample and its own minimum, so many colourways raise the price.
  • Decoration and packing: prints, embroidery, embossed insoles, printed boxes and tissue each add a line.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: a first sample takes two to four weeks on an existing last and sole; new sole moulds add several weeks for tooling. Bulk usually runs 60 to 90 days from sample approval, longer for imported knit yarn or mesh and custom sole colours. Roptan confirms dates in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to your warehouse, shops or school in Dhaka, Chattogram or any other city, boxed and cartoned by size and colourway, with the packing list, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Canvas school shoes can be packed by size before the school year starts.

Buying sneakers and sports shoes for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) per pair, with pairs per carton and cartons per container stated, or FCA Dhaka for air freight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Textile-upper sneakers fall under HS heading 6404. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, origin paperwork (a REX statement for EU GSP, UK DCTS), physical and chemical test reports, CPSIA reports for US kids' styles and the final inspection report.

Questions buyers ask

Vulcanised or cemented: which should we choose?

Vulcanised construction cures a rubber sole and foxing onto the upper with heat, giving the flexible, flat look of classic canvas shoes. Cemented construction glues a finished sole unit to the lasted upper, which allows EVA midsoles and shaped running soles. The choice sets the sole cost, the look and which units can quote.

Can we use an existing sole to cut cost?

Yes. An open sole from the seller's range needs no new moulds, which saves a large one-time cost and weeks of lead time; the trade-off is that other brands may use the same sole. A custom sole needs moulds in every size, usually charged as tooling, so agree who owns them. We show both routes in the quote.

What is the minimum order for private label sneakers?

It is set per style and colourway across a size run. Makers often start at a few hundred pairs per colourway on an existing sole with stock materials; custom soles, dyed-to-order materials and extra colourways raise it. The quote states the minimum per colourway.

What mistakes do first-time sneaker buyers make?

Designing a new sole for a small first order and paying for moulds in every size. Approving a sample in one size only. Choosing white canvas and white rubber without a plan for glue marks and yellowing. And shipping canvas or jute shoes without moisture control in the monsoon.

Can knit sneakers be machine washed?

Some can, if the knit, adhesive and sole are chosen for it and the care label says so. Heat and tumbling can weaken cemented bonds and shrink some yarns, so test a washed pair for sole adhesion and upper size before you print a machine-wash claim.

How soon will I hear back about sneakers and sports shoes?
