Buying lingerie and underwear in Bangladesh

Lingerie is small but complex. A bra is built from cups, wires, elastics, rings, sliders and hook-and-eye tape, many of them imported, and its fit has to hold across a band and cup matrix. Importers, retailers and private label brands are the usual buyers of a lingerie manufacturer in Bangladesh; local brands buy for shops in Dhaka.

Bras

Wired for support and shape, wireless for comfort, moulded foam cups for a smooth line under clothes, cut-and-sew cups for lace styles. Each band and cup size is a separate item to fit, stock and inspect; ask for a wash test for wire poke-through.

Briefs and boxers

Briefs, trunks and boxer briefs in cotton-elastane, modal or microfibre jersey, and woven boxers. The waistband decides comfort and life: state its width and ask for recovery after repeated washing. A logo waistband is a custom elastic with its own minimum.

Panties

Women's briefs in cotton, modal, microfibre or lace, with a cotton gusset as the norm. Bonded or laser-cut edges lie flat under clothing but need bonding equipment and cost more than elastic edges; state the edge finish, rise and multipack format.

Camisoles and slips

Camisoles and bias-cut slips in satin, viscose jersey or lace, with adjustable straps on rings and sliders. Satin and light viscose slip at the seams, so ask for a seam slippage test (ISO 13936) at strap and side seams.

Pyjamas and nightwear

Pyjama sets, nightdresses and robes in cotton poplin, jersey, flannel or satin. Nightwear has its own fire rules in several markets, and loose styles and brushed fabrics carry more risk, so name the market before the fabric is chosen.

Shapewear

Bodysuits, high-waist briefs and slips in power mesh, a strong open warp knit with elastane. Words like firm mean little: state control as a tested force at a set stretch, and check it in more than one size.

What a lingerie manufacturer in Bangladesh needs from you

Size system
EU bands in centimetres (70, 75, 80) or UK and US bands in inches (32, 34, 36); cup letters above D differ by market, so name the system and every size you sell.
Base size and fit rounds
The size the pattern is built on, usually a middle size, fitted on a live model or a form, then graded. Plan one or two fit rounds before the pre-production sample.
Bill of materials
Every part by supplier code and colour: fabric, lace, lining, cups, wires, hooks and eyes, rings, sliders and elastics. Parts come from different mills, so ask for a colour-matched set before bulk.
Elastics, stretch and recovery
Width and type (picot, plush-back, strap) and tested elongation and recovery for elastics and main fabric, before and after washing, since slack fabric fits loose after a few washes.
Wires and metal parts
Wire shape and size per cup, tip coating and channel fabric; rings, sliders and hooks in coated metal or nylon, with nickel release results to EN 1811 for the EU.
Packing and hygiene
Moulded cups crush when folded, so state boxed or nested packing; briefs on hangers or in multipacks with a card. Hygiene liners, labels and barcodes are part of the price.

Tests and rules for lingerie

EN 14704-1 and EN 14704-3
Elasticity of stretch fabrics by strip test, and of narrow fabrics such as elastics: force at a set extension and recovery. Set pass values for bands, straps and shapewear zones.
ISO 105-E04 and ISO 105-C06
Colour fastness to perspiration and to washing, both critical next to skin. Dark lace and bright microfibre stain light parts when they fail.
UK Nightwear (Safety) Regulations 1985
Flammability requirements for nightwear, tested to BS 5722 and strictest for children's nightwear, with a permanent keep-away-from-fire label where the garment does not meet the test.
16 CFR 1610, 1615 and 1616 (US)
Flammability of clothing textiles, and of children's sleepwear. Plain fabrics of 2.6 oz per square yard or more, and fabrics wholly of polyester, nylon or wool, are exempt from the 1610 test.
Regulation (EU) 1007/2011
Fibre labelling. For bras and other corsetry it allows the cups and the back to be labelled separately, so agree the label wording at sampling.

What moves the price of lingerie

  • Component count: a wired bra carries cups, wires, casing, several elastics, rings, sliders and hook-and-eye tape, each bought, matched and checked.
  • Lace and fabric: stretch and Leavers lace, printed microfibre, modal and silk cost more than plain jersey or raschel lace.
  • Cups: custom moulded shapes need a mould per size; stock shapes cost less and sample faster.
  • Size range: many band and cup sizes mean more patterns, more components to stock and small runs per size.
  • Packing and tests: hangers, boxes, multipack cards, hygiene liners and lab tests per colour are priced per piece.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: a first fit sample takes two to three weeks. Bulk usually runs 60 to 90 days from fit approval, with briefs and nightwear on stock fabric at the shorter end and wired bras and lace styles at the longer end, because dyed-to-match lace, cups and elastics are made to order, often abroad. Inside Bangladesh we deliver to your warehouse or shops in Dhaka, Chattogram or any other city, packed by style, size and colour in the presentation you set (hangers, boxes or multipacks), with the packing list, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Local brands can order smaller runs on stock fabric and components.

Buying lingerie and underwear for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), or FCA Dhaka for air freight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Bras fall under HS heading 6212 and knitted briefs and nightwear under 6107 or 6108, so describe each style on the invoice. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, origin paperwork (a REX statement for EU GSP, UK DCTS), test reports and the final inspection report. Payment: commonly a letter of credit, or a deposit with the balance against documents.

Questions buyers ask

What does a bra size like 34B or 75B mean?

The number is the band under the bust: 34 in inches for the UK and US, 75 in centimetres for the EU, the same size. The letter is the cup, set by the difference between bust and band; letters above D differ between markets, so name the system on every order.

Can underwired bras go through a needle detector?

Not as finished bras, because the steel wire sets off the detector. Units control broken needles with a needle log and by checking parts before the wire is inserted. Ask how the unit does it; buyers of wired styles usually write this control into the order terms.

What is the minimum order for private label lingerie?

It depends on the trims and fabrics. On stock fabric, lace and components, factories often accept a few hundred pieces per style and colour; dyed-to-match lace, elastics and moulded cups carry their own minimums, so bras run higher than briefs. We state the minimum in the quote.

How is shapewear compression measured?

As the force the fabric needs to stretch a set amount, measured on a tensile tester, for example to EN 14704-1, on each zone's fabric. Light, medium and firm mean little without numbers, so set target values and a tolerance on the approved sample and test bulk fabric against them.

Do nightwear orders need flammability tests?

Often, yes. The UK Nightwear (Safety) Regulations 1985 apply with BS 5722 as the test; in the US, 16 CFR 1610 covers adult sleepwear and 16 CFR 1615 or 1616 children's sleepwear. Brushed fabrics such as flannel need particular care, so tell us the market at the start: it can change the fabric choice.
