Buying generators in Bangladesh

Generators carry Bangladesh through load shedding and storm outages. Factories in Gazipur, Savar and Narayanganj run standby or prime sets, hospitals and high-rise buildings in Dhaka and Chattogram (Chittagong) need standby power that starts on its own, and contractors need sets for sites without grid power. Diesel is the default; gas suits long daily running where a factory has a gas connection sanctioned for generation.

Diesel generators

The usual choice for standby duty, hospitals and sites without gas: it starts within seconds, takes the large load steps that lifts and pumps need, and runs on fuel stored on site. Compare fuel use in litres per hour at 75 percent load.

Gas generators

For prime or continuous duty where a factory has a gas connection sanctioned for generation. Cost per kWh is usually lower than diesel, but the set costs more, accepts load in smaller steps and needs steady gas pressure; low line pressure cuts output.

Silent canopy gensets

A diesel or gas set in an insulated steel enclosure that cuts noise and keeps out rain, for rooftops, hospitals and homes near neighbours. Ask for the sound level in dB(A) at 7 m and the load it was measured at.

Standby generators

Rated for emergency use when the grid fails, for a limited number of hours a year. An AMF panel or ATS starts the set and transfers the essential load within seconds. For outages lasting hours every day, buy a prime-rated set.

Portable generators

Single phase units of a few kVA on a frame or wheels, for shops, homes, events and site tools. Compare the continuous rating, not the peak figure on the box. Choose an inverter model for computers, and never run one indoors.

Synchronising panels

Controls that run two or more sets together, share the load and start units as demand rises, so you add capacity in steps and keep running while one set is serviced. Running in parallel with the grid usually needs the utility's approval.

What a generator supplier in Bangladesh needs from you

Rating and duty: State kVA at 0.8 power factor (100 kVA delivers 80 kW) and the ISO 8528 duty: standby, prime or continuous. Standby is usually about 10 percent above prime, so ask which rating a quote uses.
Load list and largest motor: List what must run in a power cut, not the whole building, and name the largest motor started direct on line. Its starting current, typically six to eight times running current, often sets the kVA.
Performance class: Ask for the ISO 8528 performance class, G1 to G4, which limits voltage and frequency dips on load steps. UPS, telecom and other rectifier loads usually call for G3.
Plant room temperature: Ratings apply at ISO 3046-1 reference conditions: 25 °C, 100 kPa and 30 percent humidity. Give your plant room's summer temperature and ask for the derated output.
Location and flood level: Ground, roof or basement, and the highest monsoon flood level: keep the set, tank and panels on a plinth above it. A roof set needs a structural check and crane access.
Transfer and controls: Say whether you need an AMF panel or ATS for automatic start and changeover, remote monitoring or synchronising, and give the cable run to your three phase, 50 Hz main board.
Fuel, noise and exhaust: State the running hours needed from the base tank; a bulk diesel tank may need a Department of Explosives licence. Give the sound limit in dB(A) at 7 m and the exhaust route.

Standards, tests and handover papers for generators

ISO 8528: The generating set standard: ratings, performance classes and test methods. Ask the seller to state the rating and class under it, and which rating each datasheet figure refers to.
ISO 3046-1: Declares engine power at reference conditions. Use it to ask what the set delivers in your plant room in summer heat, not in the maker's test bay.
Engine and alternator nameplates: Engine and alternator often come from different makers. The quote should name both, with origins and models that match the nameplates and the factory test report on delivery.
Bill of entry: For an imported set, the customs bill of entry, whose description and origin match the nameplates, confirms the import and the stated origin.

What moves the price of a generator

Rating and duty: a prime-rated set needs a larger engine than a standby set of the same kVA.
Engine and alternator origin: European, Japanese, Chinese or Indian, which differ in price, fuel use and local parts supply.
Canopy: a lower sound level at 7 m needs a heavier enclosure and more insulation.
Controls: an AMF panel, ATS, remote monitoring and synchronising each add cost.
Site work: plinth, fuel tank and lines, exhaust flue, cabling to the main board and crane hire for roof sets.
Running cost: for a set that runs daily, fuel over a few years costs more than the set.

Lead times and delivery

Common diesel ratings are often in stock with sellers in Dhaka and Chattogram and usually reach site in one to three weeks. Larger sets, gas sets and synchronised systems are built or imported to order and typically take two to four months, including sea freight and customs clearance. A custom canopy or a crane lift adds time. Roptan confirms the delivery date in the quote.

Questions buyers ask

What size generator do I need?

Size it for what must run in a power cut, with headroom for motor starting, not for the whole building. Lifts, pumps and chillers draw several times their running current as they start. Send the load list with motor ratings; the seller sizes the set and we check it against your list.

Should I choose a diesel or a gas generator?

Diesel for standby duty, sites without gas and large motor starts: it starts fast and takes big load steps. Gas where you have a connection sanctioned for generation and the set runs many hours a day: cost per kWh is usually lower, though the set costs more and output falls when line pressure drops.

Can the generator start by itself when the power goes?

Yes, with an automatic mains failure (AMF) panel and an automatic transfer switch (ATS) rated to the set. The panel senses the outage, starts the set, moves the load across and returns it when the grid is back. Tell us the cable distance to your main board; the seller wires and tests it at commissioning.

How do I compare two generator quotes?

Put them on the same basis first: kVA and duty rating, engine and alternator origin, canopy noise at 7 m, fuel use at 75 percent load, and what is included: AMF panel and ATS, cabling, exhaust, installation, warranty, service visits, VAT and payment terms. A lower total often means a line is missing.

Can a generator go on the roof of a Dhaka building?

Often, yes, if the structure can take it. The slab must carry the set, a full fuel tank and the anti-vibration base, so have your structural engineer confirm the load first. Plan crane access, a canopy for rain and noise, and an exhaust route clear of neighbouring windows.

How soon will I hear back about generators?
