Buying edible oils in Bangladesh

Bangladesh presses mustard oil from local seed, extracts rice bran oil from the bran its rice mills produce, and refines imported crude soybean and palm oil in plants around Chattogram and Narayanganj. Refiners also make palm olein and vegetable ghee, and packers fill coconut oil, sold in bottles, tins, drums or flexitanks. For an edible oil exporter in Bangladesh, what matters is identity, freshness and purity, proven by tests on your lot.

Roptan sources for you. Send your specification; we match it to verified refiners and mills, check the certificate of analysis against an independent test of your lot, inspect filling and sealing, and see the drums, packs or flexitank loaded. You deal with Roptan only, and the quote lists the tests and documents included.

Edible oils we source

Mustard oil

Pressed from mustard seed, often in a traditional ghani, and sold unrefined for its pungency, which comes from allyl isothiocyanate. Specify pressing method, FFA and purity tests for argemone oil and blending. It is naturally high in erucic acid, which some markets limit.

Rice bran oil

Extracted from rice bran and refined into a light oil that holds up well in frying. Specify FFA, peroxide value, colour and gamma oryzanol content, and ask about bran freshness, because bran builds free fatty acid quickly after milling.

Palm olein

The refined, bleached and deodorised liquid fraction of palm oil. Specify iodine value, commonly 56 or higher for standard olein, and cloud point: super olein stays clear longer in cool weather. Ask for RSPO certification if your customers expect it.

Coconut oil

Refined (RBD) or virgin coconut oil; food and cosmetic grades differ in refining and paperwork, so state the use. Specify FFA as lauric acid, moisture, colour and odour. It solidifies below about 24 °C, which is normal.

Vegetable ghee

A solid vegetable fat for frying, sweets and bakery, not dairy ghee and not to be labelled as such. Specify slip melting point, FFA, flavour and trans fat per 100 g of fat, which Bangladesh and the EU limit.

Refined soybean oil

Refined from imported crude oil, in bottles, jerrycans or bulk. Specify FFA, peroxide value, colour and moisture, and whether vitamin A is added: oil sold in Bangladesh is fortified under a 2013 law, while export buyers may not want it.

How to brief an edible oil exporter in Bangladesh

Oil identity
Name the oil and grade, and ask for a fatty acid profile by gas chromatography, which shows the oil is what the label says, not a blend.
Freshness
Free fatty acid as a percentage (as oleic, or as lauric for coconut) and peroxide value in meq O2/kg. Both rise with heat, light and time in storage.
Physical grade
Colour by the method named in the contract, moisture and impurities, cloud point or slip melting point, and iodine value for palm fractions.
Purity and process contaminants
Argemone oil and blending for mustard oil, mineral oil and heavy metals for all oils, 3-MCPD and glycidyl esters for refined oils, and trans fat for vegetable ghee.
Fortification and additives
Vitamin A added or not, antioxidants, and any blending stated clearly. Refined oil for sale in Bangladesh is fortified; export oil follows the buyer's rules.
Pack and unit
PET bottles, jerrycans, tins, drums or a flexitank, and litres or kilograms: a litre of oil weighs about 0.92 kg, so per-litre prices look lower.
Labels, quantity and terms
Oil name, allergens such as mustard and date marking in your language; tonnes or cartons per shipment; FOB Chattogram or CFR; letter of credit or deposit.

Standards, limits and documents for edible oils

Codex CXS 210-1999
The Codex standard for named vegetable oils: identity by fatty acid ranges, and quality limits such as a peroxide value up to 10 meq/kg for refined oils.
Regulation (EU) 2023/915
Sets EU maximum levels for contaminants, including erucic acid, 3-MCPD and glycidyl fatty acid esters in vegetable oils. Other markets set their own.
Trans fat limits
Bangladesh, under a 2021 regulation, and the EU, under Regulation (EU) 2019/649, limit industrial trans fat to 2 g per 100 g of fat. Ask for a test on vanaspati.
Vitamin A fortification
A 2013 law requires edible oil sold in Bangladesh, in practice refined soybean and palm oil, to be fortified with vitamin A. For export, state what your market requires.
HACCP, ISO 22000, BSTI and halal
The refinery's current food safety certificate for the lines that fill your order; the BSTI mark for oils sold in Bangladesh where listed; halal from the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh where needed.

What moves the price of edible oil

  • Crude oil and seed prices: world soybean, palm and mustard seed markets set most of the cost.
  • Refining and grade: physical refining, fractionation, low FFA and light colour grades add cost.
  • Pack: bottles and tins cost more per tonne than drums, and a flexitank usually costs less than drums.
  • Testing: fatty acid profile, contaminant and purity tests on your lot.
  • Exchange rate and terms: crude oil is imported, so the taka rate moves the refined oil cost; Incoterm and payment terms.

Lead times and delivery

Oil from stock in standard packs can often ship two to four weeks from order; private label bottles and printed tins usually take four to eight weeks, because packaging is made first. Crude oil arrivals, lab turnaround and flexitank supply add time, and soybean and palm prices move quickly, so quotes are often valid for a short time only. Roptan confirms dates and validity in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to hotels, caterers, bakeries, food processors and retailers in Dhaka, Chattogram and Narayanganj, in bottles, jerrycans, tins, drums or bulk, fortified as the law requires. You receive the packing list, the certificate of analysis for the batch and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Seals and volumes are checked on arrival. Store oil in the shade: heat and light speed up rancidity.

Buying edible oils for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), or CFR or CIF to your port, in drums, IBCs or a flexitank in a 20-foot container, or palletised retail packs. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, certificate of analysis, an independent lab report for the lot, a health certificate where your market needs one and halal if asked. Oil refined from imported crude may not qualify for duty preferences.

What we check for this order

  • Refinery certificates and ERCThe refinery's HACCP or ISO 22000 certificate and the exporter's ERC, current and in the names on the quote.
  • Lab analysis per lotFFA, peroxide value, moisture, fatty acid profile and purity tests, plus trans fat for ghee, by an accredited lab.
  • Pack and fillBottles and tins checked for fill, seal, leaks and labels, and flexitanks for fitting and cleanliness, before loading.
  • A visit before the first orderPressing or refining, storage tanks, filling and sealing seen in person, including how oil is kept from light and heat.

Questions buyers ask

How can I tell mustard oil is pure?

Ask for a fatty acid profile by gas chromatography, which shows blending with cheaper oils, and tests for argemone oil and mineral oil. Pungency from allyl isothiocyanate is another sign of real mustard oil. We ask for these results on your lot from an accredited lab.

Can mustard oil be sold as a cooking oil everywhere?

No. Mustard oil is naturally high in erucic acid, and some markets cap erucic acid in food oils or allow mustard oil only for external use. Check your market's rule before ordering; the seller labels to your instructions, and the erucic acid result travels with the lot.

Why has my palm olein or coconut oil turned cloudy or solid?

Both thicken in cool weather. Coconut oil turns solid in a cool room, and palm olein clouds below its cloud point. Both clear again when warmed; it is not a defect. If your climate is cool, choose super olein, which has a higher iodine value and a lower cloud point.

Do you ship oil in flexitanks?

Yes, for bulk refined oils such as palm olein and soybean oil. A flexitank is a single-use, food-grade bag that fits a 20-foot container, filled at the refinery. Specify the oil, volume and discharge method; we check the container, the flexitank certificate and the fill weight at loading.

Is vitamin A added to Bangladeshi edible oil?

Refined oils such as soybean and palm oil sold inside Bangladesh must be fortified with vitamin A under the 2013 fortification law. For export, tell us whether you want it added. The refiner fortifies to your instruction, and the certificate of analysis states the level.

How soon will I hear back about edible oils?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
