Buying animal feed and by-products in Bangladesh

Bangladesh crushes imported soybeans and local oilseeds and mills a large rice crop, so oil cake and de-oiled rice bran are made here in volume. Feed mills and farms buy them at home; importers buy them as feed ingredients, with salted casings, bone and horn. Soybean oil cake

The residue after oil is taken from soybeans, the main protein source in poultry and fish feed. Solvent-extracted meal usually carries 44% to 48% crude protein; expeller cake keeps more oil. Buy on the guaranteed analysis and ask for urease activity.

Sesame oil cake

Cake left after sesame seed is pressed for oil, for cattle, poultry and fish feed. Protein and oil vary with the pressing, and residual oil turns rancid in heat, so buy on a stated analysis and test every lot for aflatoxin.

De-oiled rice bran

Rice bran after its oil is extracted by solvent. Raw bran turns rancid within days; de-oiled bran keeps far longer and supplies fibre and moderate protein. Set limits for fibre, ash, and sand and silica, which rise when husk is mixed in.

Fish and poultry feed

Compound feed to a formula for one species and stage: broiler starter to finisher, layer, fish or shrimp feed. Floating feed is extruded; sinking pellets suit shrimp. State species, stage, protein and fat, pellet size and bag size.

Natural casings

Cleaned, salted intestines of sheep, goats or cattle for sausage makers, dry salted or in brine, graded by calibre in millimetres and length, sold in hanks. Specify species, calibre range, shortest piece, holes allowed and packing, and approve a measured sample.

Bone and horn

Bones, horns and hooves collected after slaughter, cleaned, dried and crushed. Crushed bone goes to gelatine and bone meal plants; horn and hoof to buttons and meal. Specify size range, moisture, fat, freedom from flesh and hide, and heat treatment.

What to tell an animal feed supplier in Bangladesh

Guaranteed analysis and basis
Minimum crude protein and fat, maximum moisture, fibre, ash and sand, as percentages, and whether as-fed or on dry matter; the same meal reads higher on dry matter.
Moisture for the monsoon
A maximum moisture, commonly around 12% for meals and bran. Damp feed heats and grows mould in the humid months from about June to October, and you pay feed prices for water.
Aflatoxin and contaminants
An aflatoxin B1 limit in µg/kg on every lot of oil cake, plus Salmonella, pesticide or heavy metal limits where your market asks, with the lab method you accept.
Heat treatment of soybean meal
Urease activity shows the meal was toasted enough to destroy the factors that block protein digestion; KOH protein solubility shows it was not overcooked.
GM status
Say if you need non-GM soybean meal. Most soybeans crushed here are imported, and some markets require GM labelling or proof of origin.
Quantity, packing and marking
Tonnes per shipment with a tolerance such as 5%; 25 or 50 kg PP woven bags with liners, jumbo bags or bulk in lined containers, with lot number and dates on every pack.
Customs heading
HS 2304 for soybean cake, 2306 for other oil cakes, 2302 for bran, 2309 for compound feed and 0504 for casings; duty, permits and certificates follow it.

Licences, tests and certificates for feed

Fish Feed and Animal Feed Act 2010
The Bangladesh law under which feed makers and sellers are licensed. Ask a compound feed maker for its current licence.
HACCP, ISO 22000 or GMP+ FSA
Feed safety systems for the plant that processes and packs the lot; check scope, site and expiry against the quote.
ISO feed analysis methods
Crude protein by Kjeldahl to ISO 5983-1, moisture to ISO 6496, crude ash to ISO 5984, urease activity to ISO 5506. Ask which method the lab used.
EU Directive 2002/32/EC
Sets maximum levels of undesirable substances in feed, such as aflatoxin B1, heavy metals and dioxins, for feed ingredients bound for the EU.
Phytosanitary, veterinary and halal certificates
A phytosanitary certificate from the DAE Plant Quarantine Wing for plant-origin feed; a veterinary health certificate through the Department of Livestock Services for casings, bone and horn; halal from the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh where needed.

What moves the price of animal feed and by-products

  • Protein and fat: meals trade on analysis, so each point of protein moves the price per tonne.
  • World soybean and oilseed prices and the exchange rate, since most beans crushed here are imported.
  • Season: rice bran follows the rice harvests; bone, horn and casing supply peaks after Eid al-Adha.
  • Specification: tight moisture, fibre and aflatoxin limits mean more selection, testing and rejected lots.
  • Packing, lot size and Incoterm: bags cost more than bulk, full containers price better, and CFR and CIF include freight.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: stock oil cake and de-oiled rice bran usually load one to three weeks after the contract and lab test; compound feed to your formula two to four weeks, including a trial batch; casings, bone and horn depend on the season. Inside Bangladesh we deliver by covered truck to feed mills, farms and warehouses in Dhaka, Gazipur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and elsewhere, weighed at a weighbridge and stacked off wet floors, with the packing list, the lot's lab report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Shortages or wet bags are raised with Roptan, not the processor.

Buying animal feed and by-products for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), bagged or in bulk in lined containers, pallets treated to ISPM 15. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, certificate of analysis, fumigation certificate where required, and the phytosanitary, veterinary or halal certificate your import conditions call for. A surveyor can seal samples at loading. Payment is commonly by letter of credit, or a deposit with the balance against documents.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between oil cake and oil meal?

Both are what is left after oil is taken from seed. Cake usually means pressed seed, which keeps more oil and energy; meal usually means solvent extraction, which leaves less oil, a little more protein and a longer shelf life. Buy on the analysis, not the name.

Which tests should I ask for on each lot?

At least crude protein, moisture, fat, fibre, ash, aflatoxin B1 and Salmonella; for soybean meal add urease activity, for rice bran sand and silica. Have the sample drawn from your own lot at loading and tested at an accredited lab, with the lot number on the report.

How do I compare animal feed quotes?

Put every quote on the same guaranteed analysis, packing, delivery term and shipment date. A lower price per tonne often hides lower protein or higher moisture. Work out the price per unit of protein, add freight and duty, and compare landed cost.

Do natural casings need a health certificate for export?

Most markets require a veterinary health certificate for casings, issued through the Department of Livestock Services, and many also ask for halal certification or approval of the plant. Send your model certificate and calibres at enquiry; we check the plant and the wording before production.

Who pays if a lot fails the lab test?

Agree it before you order. The contract should name the lab, the method and whose result decides, usually the loading surveyor's certificate or a jointly sealed sample, and say that a failed lot is replaced. We keep a sealed retained sample, so a dispute is settled on evidence.

How soon will I hear back about animal feed and by-products?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
