Buying carpets and rugs in Bangladesh

Bangladesh makes rugs from its own jute and from cotton, wool, viscose and recycled fabric: flatweaves, braids, loop and tufted piles, door mats, kilims and dhurries, including the shataranji of Rangpur. Retailers and importers abroad buy them by programme; hotels, offices and homes buy locally. A carpet and rug manufacturer in Bangladesh is judged on size, weight, colour and dryness against the approved sample.

Jute rugs

Natural or dyed jute rugs in flatweave, herringbone, braided or chunky loop constructions. They are hard-wearing but absorb water, brown when wet and shed at first. Specify size and tolerance, weight per square metre, construction, edge finish and backing.

Cotton rugs

Flatwoven, loop, tufted or chenille cotton rugs and bath mats, often dyed or printed, many machine washable. Specify size, weight, pile height, fastness to washing and rubbing, and shrinkage after washing, tested on the bulk colours.

Braided rugs

Strands of jute, cotton or fabric strips braided and stitched into round, oval or rectangular rugs, reversible and hard-wearing. Specify shape, size, braid width, stitching thread and seam strength, since open seams and curling edges are the common faults.

Door mats

Mats in jute, coir, cotton or polypropylene, with or without rubber or PVC backing that stops slipping. Specify size, thickness, pile, backing, slip resistance and water absorption, and whether the mat stands outdoors; for PVC backing, ask about phthalates.

Hand-tufted carpets

Pile carpets made by punching yarn through a stretched backing cloth with a tufting gun, then latexing and covering with a secondary cloth. Specify yarn, pile height and weight in g/m², cut or loop pile, carving, colours by reference and the backing.

Kilims and dhurries

Flatwoven rugs with no pile, often reversible, in cotton, jute or wool; dhurries are the South Asian flatweave and kilims use tapestry weaves, though the names overlap. Specify size, ends and picks per 10 cm, yarn, colours, fringe finish and fastness for dark shades on light grounds.

What to tell a carpet and rug manufacturer in Bangladesh

Construction
Flatwoven, braided, tufted, loop or chunky, cut or loop pile, and the backing, with a physical sample or detailed drawing. Two makers can mean different things by the same name.
Size and tolerance
Sizes in centimetres or feet, such as 160 x 230 cm, with a tolerance and shape, measured flat after the rug has rested; natural fibres move with humidity.
Weight and pile
Weight per square metre, and for tufted rugs pile height in millimetres and pile weight. Weight is the simplest check that you got the fibre you paid for.
Fibre and yarn
Jute, cotton, wool, viscose or synthetic, with yarn count or ply and any recycled content, stated the same way on the label and the invoice.
Colours and design
Artwork to scale, colour references with a tolerance, yarn poms for each shade and a strike-off approved before bulk.
Backing, edges and slip
Latex, cloth or anti-slip backing, fully cured and low in odour; binding, serging, fringes or hems, and seam strength for braided rugs, because poor edges fray and curl first.
Moisture and mould
Jute and cotton rugs packed in the monsoon can mould and brown in a container. State a moisture limit, dry storage, breathable wrapping and desiccants in the container.

Tests and paperwork for rugs and carpets

ISO 105 colour fastness
Rubbing (ISO 105-X12) and washing (ISO 105-C06), graded on grey scales, and light (ISO 105-B02) on its own scale. Ask for results on each colour of the order, especially dark shades.
ISO 4919 tuft withdrawal
The force needed to pull a tuft out of a pile carpet, the key check on whether the latex holds the tufts in hand-tufted carpets.
Flammability of rugs
US rules for carpets and rugs are 16 CFR 1630 and 1631, the methenamine pill test; ISO 6925 is a similar tablet test.
REACH and OEKO-TEX
Under REACH, azo dyes releasing listed amines are limited to 30 mg/kg, and phthalates in PVC backing are restricted; OEKO-TEX Standard 100 covers harmful substances by product class.
ERC and social audits
The exporter's ERC from the CCI&E, and an amfori BSCI or Sedex SMETA audit where your retail programme requires one, current and for the site that makes your rugs.

What moves the price of carpets and rugs

  • Fibre: wool and viscose usually cost more than cotton, and cotton more than jute; dyed yarn costs more than natural.
  • Construction and weight: hand-tufted and dense flatweave rugs take longer to make, and more fibre per square metre costs more.
  • Design: more colours, borders, fine detail and custom shapes add sampling and production time.
  • Finishing and packing: carving, binding, fringes, latex backing, labels and retail-ready packing each add cost, and small runs carry the same set-up.
  • Carton volume, because rugs are bulky and sea freight is charged by space; compare landed cost per piece.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: strike-offs and samples take two to four weeks. Bulk usually takes 45 to 90 days after sample approval; jute and cotton flatweaves and door mats are often quicker, and hand-tufted carpets in custom colours sit at the long end. Changes after approval restart the sample step. Monsoon damp, dyeing capacity and Eid holidays add time. Roptan confirms the dates in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver rolled or folded rugs by covered truck to your showroom, hotel, office or warehouse in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet or elsewhere, wrapped against dust and damp, with the packing list, any test reports ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Wall-to-wall fitting is arranged through the seller, and transit damage is raised with Roptan, not the maker.

Buying carpets and rugs for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) in polybagged rolls or export cartons, loaded dry with desiccants. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list by design and size, bill of lading, certificate of origin, colour fastness and flammability reports where required, a phytosanitary certificate for jute where the destination asks, and a REX statement for EU GSP or the origin papers for the UK DCTS. A final inspection to AQL under ISO 2859-1 checks size, weight, colour, edges and labels before loading.

Questions buyers ask

Which rug suits which room?

Jute rugs suit dry living rooms and hallways; they are tough but stain if wet. Cotton rugs suit bedrooms, kitchens and children's rooms, since many can be washed. Hand-tufted wool or viscose suits rooms where softness matters, and braided rugs and door mats handle heavy traffic.

Why does a new jute rug shed?

Jute is a bast fibre, and loose short fibres work out of the surface in the first weeks of use. Tighter weaves and better yarn shed less. Ask for rugs to be shaken or vacuumed before packing, and specify construction and yarn, not weight alone.

What should I specify for hand-tufted carpets?

Pile height and weight, yarn, cut or loop pile and colours by reference, then tuft withdrawal force to ISO 4919, since weak latex lets tufts pull out. Approve a strike-off in your colours before bulk; the sample charge and minimum per design are confirmed in the quote.

Do rugs need a flammability test?

It depends on the market. US rules for carpets and rugs are 16 CFR 1630 and 1631, known as the pill test. Tell us your market; we ask for a lab report on the same construction and fibre, not on a similar rug.

What is the minimum order for rugs?

Usually per design and colour, since each design needs its own set-up and often its own yarn dyeing. Makers often accept small runs of stock designs and ask more for custom colours. We state the minimum per design in the quote.

How soon will I hear back about carpets and rugs?
