Buying tents and camping gear in Bangladesh

Tents are engineered textile products: coated fabric, taped seams, poles and fittings that must keep water out and stand up to wind. Bangladesh makes them for outdoor brands, retailers and relief agencies abroad, while NGOs, event companies and contractors buy tents and tarpaulins at home. A tent manufacturer in Bangladesh has to prove water, fire and strength figures on the fabric used, and ship in time for the season.

Camping tents

Tents for outdoor retail, from backpacking to family sizes, in coated polyester or nylon on fibreglass or aluminium poles; dome tents stand on their own, tunnel tents need pegging but give more room for their weight. Specify berths, floor size, peak height, hydrostatic head, pole material and packed weight.

Relief and shelter tents

Family and multipurpose shelters for emergencies, usually built to the buying agency's published specification: canvas, polycotton or coated polyester, steel or aluminium frame, groundsheet and inner lining. The maker must meet it exactly, and a pitched pre-production sample comes first.

Tarpaulins

Covers for goods, trucks, roofs and relief use, in woven HDPE laminated with LDPE on both sides, PVC-coated polyester or canvas; PVC is heavier and usually lasts longer. Specify size, weight in g/m², UV stabiliser, colour, hem reinforcement and eyelet spacing.

Sleeping bags

Mummy or rectangular bags with synthetic or down fill. Specify shell and lining fabric, fill type and weight, zip side, packed size and temperature ratings; for down, fill power, down content and RDS if claimed.

Awnings

Fixed or retractable shades for shops, homes, patios and camps, in coated polyester, PVC or acrylic fabric on steel or aluminium frames. Specify size, fabric, water and UV resistance, flame retardancy, frame, fixing method and any side walls.

Camping accessories

Pegs, spare poles, guy ropes, groundsheets, footprints that protect the floor, stuff sacks and repair kits, sold with tents or on their own. Specify material, dimensions, finish and packing, and match poles and pegs to the tent they serve.

What to tell a tent manufacturer in Bangladesh

Fabric and coating
Fibre, denier and construction, such as 68D or 75D polyester taffeta, with PU or silicone coating and its weight in g/m². State flysheet, inner and groundsheet separately.
Water resistance
Hydrostatic head in millimetres to ISO 811, commonly 1,500 to 3,000 mm for flysheets and higher for groundsheets, because body weight presses water through the floor, with taped or welded seams tested too.
Frame and poles
Fibreglass, aluminium alloy or steel, with diameter, wall thickness and the number and length of sections, plus pegs and spares per tent.
Fire and chemical rules
Name the fire test, such as CPAI-84, with a report on the same fabric and coating; a PFAS-free water repellent where your market requires it; and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for fabric that touches skin.
Heat, damp and storage
PU coatings can break down in hot, humid storage, and canvas grows mould. Ask for dry packing, desiccants and a hydrolysis-resistant coating for stock kept long.
Packing, season and kit list
Carry bag, retail box or bulk carton, pegs, guy ropes, instructions in your language, carton marks and the date goods must reach your warehouse; for relief kits, the agency's packing list and pallet pattern.

Standards and tests for tents and sleeping bags

EN ISO 5912
Requirements and test methods for camping tents, the usual reference for retail camping tents. Ask for a report on the tent model, not only the fabric.
ISO 811 hydrostatic head
Water penetration resistance of fabric, in millimetres of water. Test flysheet and groundsheet fabric from your lot.
CPAI-84
A flame-resistance specification for tent fabrics. Ask for the lab report on the production fabric and coating where your market requires it.
ISO 23537-1
Thermal and dimensional requirements for sleeping bags, giving comfort, limit and extreme temperature ratings from a heated manikin test. Buy on the lab report, not a label figure.
RDS and IDFB down testing
The Responsible Down Standard for down claims, with a transaction certificate, and IDFB test methods for fill power and down content. Ask for results on the fill lot used.

What moves the price of tents

  • Fabric and coating: denier, coating type and weight, hydrostatic head, ripstop or plain weave, and fire or water-repellent treatments.
  • Frame: aluminium poles cost more than fibreglass and weigh less than steel; more poles cost more.
  • Size and design: floor area, rooms, porches, doors, windows and taped seams add material and sewing time.
  • Fill for sleeping bags: down costs more than synthetic fill, and higher fill power costs more.
  • Testing, retail boxes and printed bags, carton size, quantity per model and colour, and how close the delivery date is to the season.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: prototypes and samples take three to six weeks. Bulk camping tents and sleeping bags usually take 60 to 90 days after sample approval, longer for imported fabric, poles or down, custom fabrics or third-party tests. Tarpaulins and relief tents to a standard specification can ship sooner from stock. Roptan confirms the dates in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver cartons or pallets by covered truck to your warehouse, relief depot, event site or shop in Dhaka, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Sylhet or elsewhere, kept dry, with the packing list, any test reports ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Tarpaulins held in stock can move within days for urgent relief, and where frame tents or awnings must be pitched, we arrange it through the seller.

Buying tents and camping gear for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) in marked export cartons, loaded dry with desiccants. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, fabric reports for hydrostatic head and flame resistance where required, sleeping bag and down reports, agency inspection reports for relief tents, and a REX statement for EU GSP or the origin papers for the UK DCTS. A final inspection to AQL under ISO 2859-1 pitches sampled tents and counts every component. Payment is commonly by letter of credit.

Questions buyers ask

What does a 3,000 mm waterproof rating mean?

The fabric held a column of water 3,000 mm high before water came through in a lab test to ISO 811. The figure covers the fabric only, so seams must be taped and tested, and coatings lose some rating with wear and washing.

Should tent fabric be polyester or nylon?

Polyester stretches less when wet and resists UV better, so the flysheet stays taut in rain. Nylon is lighter and stronger for its weight but sags when wet. Cotton or polycotton canvas breathes and stays cooler, but is heavy and must be dried before storage.

Can you supply tents to a relief agency specification?

Yes. Send the specification and its version. We source from makers who have produced that item, check a pitched pre-production sample and fabric reports against it, and arrange the inspection the agency requires. Plan family tents by people: Sphere guidance is at least 3.5 square metres of covered living space per person in warm climates.

How are sleeping bag temperatures rated?

Under ISO 23537-1, a heated manikin test gives comfort, limit and extreme temperatures. Ask for the lab report on the model, with the fill type and weight used, because a rating for a different fill or size does not apply to your bag.

When should I order for next season?

Work back from the date the goods must be in your warehouse: samples, 60 to 90 days of bulk production, inspection and the sea voyage. Coated fabric is made in minimum runs, so a custom colour often sets the minimum per model. Roptan builds these dates into the quote.

How soon will I hear back about tents and camping gear?
