Buying fishing nets in Bangladesh

Nets are bought on four numbers, twine size, mesh size, depth in meshes and length, plus the knot and finish that keep the mesh true. Bangladesh's net makers produce nylon and polyethylene netting, cast nets, sports and safety nets and tackle for importers, fish farms, sports suppliers and construction firms. A fishing net manufacturer in Bangladesh has to hold those numbers in every piece and prove strength by test.

Knotted fishing nets

Netting tied with single or double knots from nylon multifilament or polyethylene twine, for trawls, seines and cages; knots hold the mesh shape under load and make repair easy. Specify material, twine size such as 210D/9, stretched mesh, meshes deep, length, knot type and colour.

Knotless nets

Netting knitted on raschel machines without knots: lighter and smoother than knotted net and gentler on fish and cages. Used for aquaculture pens, hatcheries, bird control and sports. Specify material, mesh shape and size, twine size, UV stabiliser and mesh breaking force.

Monofilament gill nets

Gill nets of single nylon filament, specified by diameter, stretched mesh, meshes deep, length and hanging ratio. Making, selling and using these nets, known as current jal, is banned in Bangladesh, so we confirm what can lawfully be made and shipped before quoting.

Cast nets

Circular hand-thrown nets with a ring of sinkers at the edge and a line at the centre. Specify radius or drop length, mesh size, twine, sinker type and total sinker weight, and whether your market accepts lead sinkers.

Sports and safety nets

Nets for football goals, cricket and golf practice, tennis and volleyball, barrier and bird nets, and safety nets for construction and loading bays. Specify material, cord size, mesh, border rope, UV stabiliser and dimensions.

Fishing tackle

Hooks, lines, floats, sinkers, ropes and swivels, sold with nets or on their own. Specify hook size and finish, line diameter and breaking strength, float buoyancy, sinker material and weight, and retail packing.

What to tell a fishing net manufacturer in Bangladesh

Material
Nylon (polyamide) multifilament, polyethylene or polyester. Nylon is stronger, supple and sinks; polyethylene floats, weighs less and usually costs less. Choose by gear, water and load.
Twine size
Denier and ply for multifilament, such as 210D/6, or resultant tex (Rtex) under ISO 858 to compare makers. Thicker twine is stronger and heavier.
Mesh size
Stretched mesh in millimetres or bar length, which is half of it; say which, and wet or dry. Many fisheries set a legal minimum mesh, so check your rules first.
Net dimensions
Meshes deep, length stretched or hung, and the hanging ratio if the net is rigged, since hanging gathers the netting and shortens it. Selvedge rows in heavier twine strengthen the edges.
Knot, finish and sun
Single or double knot, or knotless; heat setting so knots do not slip and change the mesh; colour, resin or dye; and UV stabiliser, since nylon and polyethylene weaken in sunlight.
Strength
Twine and knot breaking force to ISO 1805 and mesh breaking force to ISO 1806, with minimums in newtons or kgf, tested on your lot, wet where the net will work in water.
Rigging, packing and labels
Head and foot ropes, floats and sinkers if you want finished nets; pieces per bale, with twine, mesh, depth, length and colour on every label.

Test methods and rules for nets

ISO 1805 and ISO 1806
Breaking force and knot breaking force of netting yarns, and mesh breaking force of netting. Ask for results on the delivered lot.
ISO 16663 mesh size
Part 1 covers the opening of the mesh and part 2 its length. Name the method in the contract so buyer and maker measure the same way.
ISO 858 twine designation
Designates netting yarns in the tex system as resultant tex (Rtex), a common basis for twines quoted in denier, ply or diameter.
EN 1263-1 safety nets
Safety requirements and test methods for construction safety nets, including mesh size and drop tests.
Protection and Conservation of Fish Act 1950
Amended in 2002 to ban making, importing, selling, owning and using current jal, defined as fishing net made of monofilament synthetic nylon fibre.

What moves the price of fishing nets

  • Material: nylon costs more than polyethylene, and both follow petrochemical prices.
  • Twine and mesh: heavier twine uses more polymer, and smaller mesh needs more knots per square metre.
  • Knot and finish: double knots, knotless construction, heat setting, resin, dye and UV stabiliser each change the cost.
  • Rigging: nets hung on ropes with floats and sinkers cost more than sheet netting.
  • Order size per specification, labelling, packing and the delivery point or FOB Chattogram.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: standard netting from stock or running machines usually ships in two to four weeks. Nets made to your twine, mesh and colour usually take four to eight weeks after the sample is approved; rigged nets, cages and safety nets with test certificates take longer. Imported yarn, power interruptions and Eid holidays add time. Roptan confirms the dates in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver bales or cartons by covered truck to your warehouse, hatchery, fish farm, club or site in Chattogram, Khulna, Dhaka, Mymensingh or elsewhere, kept out of the sun, with the packing list and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Only nets legal to use in Bangladesh are sourced for local delivery, and where sports or safety nets need installing, we arrange it through the seller.

Buying fishing nets for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) in pressed bales or cartons, labelled by piece. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list by specification with piece counts and weights, bill of lading, certificate of origin, test reports for twine, knot and mesh breaking force and mesh size, EN 1263-1 certificates for safety nets, and a REX statement on origin for EU GSP. An independent inspector can measure mesh and twine and count pieces sampled to ISO 2859-1 before loading. Payment is commonly by letter of credit at sight.

Questions buyers ask

How is mesh size measured on a fishing net?

Usually as stretched mesh: the distance between opposite knot centres with the mesh pulled tight, in millimetres. Some buyers use bar length, one side of the mesh, half of that. ISO 16663 sets the methods; name the method and whether nets are measured wet or dry.

What does 210D/9 mean for nylon netting twine?

Nine yarns of 210 denier nylon twisted together; more ply gives a thicker, stronger twine. To compare makers, ask for the resultant tex (Rtex) and knot breaking force as well, and the weight per piece, since a cheaper net is often lighter twine.

Should I choose knotted or knotless netting?

Knotless netting is lighter, smoother and gentler on fish, so it suits aquaculture pens, hatcheries and sports nets. Knotted netting holds its mesh shape under heavy gear loads and is easy to repair, so it suits trawls and seines. Tell us the use and load.

Can you supply monofilament gill nets?

Not for use in Bangladesh, and making them here is banned too: the Protection and Conservation of Fish Act, as amended in 2002, bans current jal, monofilament nylon nets. Send the gear details and your fishery's mesh rule, and we confirm what can lawfully be made and shipped before quoting.

Do safety nets come with a test certificate?

They should. Construction safety nets are tested to EN 1263-1, which covers mesh size and drop tests, and the certificate must match the net size, mesh and border rope you receive. We check the certificate and the net labels against each other before shipping.

How soon will I hear back about fishing nets?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
