Bangladesh is one of the world's main jute growers, with mills around Khulna and Narayanganj. Retailers and brands abroad buy jute shopping and tote bags as a reusable alternative to plastic, and food exporters buy sacks for cocoa, coffee and grain. Open totes with long shoulder handles for retail, book fairs and events, often unlaminated. Specify size, gusset, handle drop, any inside pocket or zip, and the print; fine lines and small text blur on open weaves.

Jute sacks

What to tell a jute bag supplier in Bangladesh

Fabric weight and weave: GSM, or ounces per 40-inch yard as the jute trade quotes hessian, with ends and picks per inch. Weight alone does not show how tight the weave is.
Size and tolerance: Width, height and gusset in centimetres with a tolerance, measured flat. Jute moves with humidity, so agree how and when bags are measured.
Handles, seams and load: Handle material, length and attachment, stitch type and thread, and the load the bag must carry, such as 10 kg of shopping or 50 kg of rice, with a handle load test at that weight.
Lamination: Inner film lamination thickness, or none. Laminated bags suit wet or heavy goods; unlaminated bags suit dry goods and plastic-free claims. Decide before you compare prices.
Batching oil and smell: Jute is spun with batching oil. Food sacks need vegetable oil to IJO 98/01 with a test report; retail bags need low odour, so ask for a smell check.
Moisture and mould: Jute's standard moisture regain is 13.75%, and bags packed damp in the monsoon can grow mould. State a moisture limit and ask for dry storage and packing.
Printing: Method, ink type, colours and vector artwork, with a strike-off on the actual fabric. For dyed or printed bags, ask for colour fastness to rubbing (ISO 105-X12).

Standards, tests and paperwork for jute bags

Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010: Requires jute packaging in Bangladesh for listed goods such as paddy, rice and fertiliser; the list has grown over time. Millers and traders buy sacks under it.
IJO Standard 98/01: The food-contact standard for jute bags: hydrocarbon-free vegetable batching oil. Cocoa and coffee buyers ask for a test report on the actual fabric lot.
ISO 13934-1 and load tests: Tensile strength of the fabric by the strip method, plus a seam and handle load test at the weight the bag must carry.
REACH and azo dyes: For dyed bags going to the EU, azo dyes that release listed amines are restricted to 30 mg/kg. Ask for a lab report per colour.
Export Registration Certificate: The ERC issued by the CCI&E, current and in the name on the invoice, so the bags clear export customs.

What moves the price of jute bags

Typical ranges: samples take one to two weeks once the artwork is final. Plain bags from stock fabric usually ship in two to four weeks, and printed or custom bags in about four to eight weeks after sample approval. Are laminated jute bags plastic-free?

No. A laminated bag has a thin plastic film inside that makes it stiffer and damp-proof, and plastic-based inks or synthetic handles change the claim too. For a plastic-free message, choose unlaminated jute or juco with natural handles and water-based inks.

Can jute sacks be used for cocoa or coffee?

Yes, if they meet IJO Standard 98/01, which requires vegetable batching oil instead of mineral oil. Ask for the test report on your lot, not a general certificate; we tie the report to the lot marking on the bales.

Can you print our logo on jute bags?
