Buying handicrafts and baskets in Bangladesh
Bangladesh makes baskets, storage, rugs and home decor from seagrass, jute, water hyacinth, bamboo and cane, as well as nakshi kantha quilts and terracotta. Importers, home and garden retailers and gift companies buy them under their own label, and hotels, shops and corporate gift buyers in Dhaka and Chattogram buy at home. Natural fibres take up moisture in the monsoon and can grow mould in a container, so a handicraft manufacturer in Bangladesh has to dry, treat and pack each lot for the voyage.

How to brief a handicraft manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Size and tolerance
- Outer dimensions in cm with an agreed tolerance, because natural materials vary. For nesting sets, state each size so the pieces stack inside each other and pack as quoted.
- Material and colour range
- Fibre, weave or braid, and whether it is natural, dyed or bleached. Natural shades vary by batch, so approve a colour range on samples rather than one exact shade.
- Frame and fittings
- Wire, cane or wooden frame, handles, lids, liners and trims. Powder-coated or painted wire resists rust, which stains natural fibre in humid storage and at sea.
- Moisture at packing
- A maximum moisture content, checked with a meter on bulk pieces at inspection. Natural fibres packed damp grow mould in a sealed container.
- Treatment
- Anti-mould and anti-borer treatment named in writing, with no dimethyl fumarate, which the EU bans in consumer products, and whether goods will be fumigated before shipment.
- Labels and packing
- Hangtags, barcodes and care and origin wording in your language; vented polybags, silica gel, cartons strong enough to stack and a drop test to ISTA 1A or 2A.
Certificates and tests for handicraft exports
- Phytosanitary certificate
- Issued by the Plant Quarantine Wing of the Department of Agricultural Extension for plant-based goods where the importing country requires one, sometimes after fumigation. Ask your broker before packing.
- ISPM 15
- Wooden crates and pallets must be heat treated or fumigated and carry the mark, or the load can be held at the port of arrival. Plywood and other processed wood packing are exempt.
- EU Directive 84/500/EEC and US FDA limits
- Lead and cadmium release from ceramic ware in contact with food, which covers glazed terracotta for serving or cooking. Ask for a lab report per glaze colour.
- ISO 105 colour fastness and azo dyes
- Washing (ISO 105-C06) and rubbing (ISO 105-X12) for kantha, jute and dyed fibres, rated on grey scales, and a test against the REACH restriction on certain azo dyes for the EU.
- EU General Product Safety Regulation
- Regulation (EU) 2023/988 covers consumer goods without a product-specific law, such as baskets and decor, and requires a responsible economic operator in the EU.
Lead times and delivery
Typical ranges: samples usually take two to four weeks, longer for new shapes or dyed colours, and bulk 45 to 90 days from sample approval, depending on quantity and fibre supply. Fibre supply follows the harvest, the monsoon, roughly June to September, slows drying and raises the mould risk, and fumigation and certificates add a few days before loading. Buying handicrafts and baskets for export
For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), consolidated when baskets, kantha and terracotta from several makers share a container. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, a REX statement on origin for EU GSP or UK DCTS paperwork, phytosanitary and fumigation certificates where required, and test reports. Before loading we check moisture, count and finish to AQL under ISO 2859-1, and the container is lined with kraft paper and desiccant. Payment is usually a deposit with the balance against documents, or a letter of credit.
Questions buyers ask
How do you prevent mould on natural fibre baskets?
By keeping goods dry from weaving to loading: dry the fibre and the finished piece, treat it, check moisture with a meter before packing, use vented polybags, silica gel in cartons and desiccant in the container.
Do handicrafts need a phytosanitary certificate?
Plant-based goods such as seagrass, jute, cane and water hyacinth often do, depending on the importing country's rules. The Plant Quarantine Wing of the Department of Agricultural Extension issues it. Tell us the port of entry and we confirm what applies before booking.
Will every basket match the sample exactly?
Not exactly, because natural fibre varies in colour and thickness. That is why we approve a size tolerance and a colour range on samples, not a single shade, and measure bulk pieces against them. Pieces outside the agreed range are replaced before shipment.
Can terracotta be used with food?
Glazed pieces can, if the glaze passes a lead and cadmium release test against EU Directive 84/500/EEC or US FDA limits, per glaze colour. Unglazed terracotta is porous and is usually sold for plants and decor. State the use in the order so the right test is done.
What is the minimum order for handicrafts?
It is set per design, size and colour, and is usually lower for stock designs in natural colours than for dyed colours, custom sizes or your branding, which each need a new batch and sample. We state the minimum and the pieces per container in the quote.
How soon will I hear back about handicrafts and baskets?
