Buying furniture in Bangladesh

Bangladesh makes dining and bedroom sets, office and metal-frame chairs, cane and rattan pieces and fitted hotel rooms. Importers and retailers abroad buy by the container, while offices, hotels and developers in Dhaka, Chattogram and Gazipur buy for new buildings and refits. Timber and cane take up moisture in the monsoon, so a furniture manufacturer in Bangladesh has to dry, seal and pack each piece for the room where it will stand.

How to brief a furniture manufacturer in Bangladesh

Drawings and sizes

Sizes in millimetres with tolerances, or photos with sizes marked. From a photo alone, makers guess depth, seat height and joints differently, and quotes cannot be compared.

Timber, board and moisture

Name the species or board type and a moisture content, usually 8 to 12 per cent for indoor furniture. Air-dried wood stays wetter and cracks in a dry, heated room.

Formaldehyde class

For MDF, particle board and plywood, state thickness, density and the emission limit: the REACH limit for the EU, or CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI for the US.

Use level and tests

Home, office, restaurant or hotel. Contract use means longer hours and heavier loads, so name the test standard and ask for a lab report on your model, not a similar one.

Upholstery and fire

Fabric or leather, foam density in kg per cubic metre, never 'high density' without a number, and the fire test your market uses. A change of fabric can mean a new test.

Packing and loading

Knock-down or assembled, carton grade, corner guards, silica gel, anti-mould sachets free of dimethyl fumarate, a drop test to ISTA 1A or 2A, and pieces per 40 ft high cube container.

EN 1335 and BIFMA X5.1

Office work chairs in Europe and general-purpose office chairs in North America: dimensions, stability, strength and durability. Ask for a dated report on the exact model, base and mechanism.

EN 12520, EN 12521, EN 16139, EN 15372

Strength, durability and safety of domestic seating and tables, and of non-domestic seating and tables. Hotels, restaurants and offices need the non-domestic level.

REACH, CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI

Formaldehyde emission limits for furniture and wood-based panels. US buyers need composite wood certified by an approved third party and labelled TSCA Title VI compliant; the EU limit sits in REACH Annex XVII.

UK fire rules and EN 1021

Upholstered furniture sold in the UK must meet the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 and carry its labels; EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2 test ignition by cigarette and match flame.

Legal timber and FSC

EU, UK and US law bar illegally harvested timber, so importers need the species and source. Where the maker holds FSC certification, check its certificate code in the FSC public database.

What moves the price of furniture

• Timber species and grade, or board type and formaldehyde class, and kiln drying to a stated moisture content.
• Imported mechanisms, runners and fabrics, priced separately and moving with the exchange rate.
• Testing: lab reports per model, fire tests on fabric and third-party formaldehyde certification.
• Knock-down or assembled: flat-packed designs fit more pieces per container; samples, jigs and set-up are charged once per design.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: samples of existing designs usually take three to five weeks, new designs longer, and bulk 45 to 90 days from sample approval, depending on quantity and finish. A new timber lot to kiln dry, imported hardware or fabric, lab tests and the monsoon, when finishes dry slowly, add time. Roptan confirms the dates in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to your office, hotel, home or site in Dhaka, Chattogram, Gazipur, Sylhet or elsewhere. The seller assembles and installs, fixes tall units to the wall and clears the snag list signed at handover. You receive the delivery challan, warranty terms for frames and mechanisms, and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying furniture for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong). Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, a REX statement on origin for EU GSP or UK DCTS paperwork, test reports, and a phytosanitary certificate for solid wood or cane where your country asks. Wooden packing carries ISPM 15 marks. We inspect the packed bulk to AQL under ISO 2859-1 before the balance is paid, usually a deposit with the balance against documents, or a letter of credit.
