Buying toys and games in Bangladesh

Bangladesh makes soft toys, plastic and wooden toys, jigsaw puzzles, board games and seasonal decorations, often sold abroad under the buyer's own label, and supplies shops, schools and corporate gift buyers in Dhaka. Toys are regulated goods, and the importer carries the legal duties in its market. A toy manufacturer in Bangladesh has to design, choose materials and test to the age grade and market you name.

For a first order the hard part is safety compliance, not finding a maker. Send the design or a sample; we match it to verified makers, check that test reports name your exact item, put quotes on one basis of materials, tests and packing, approve a pre-production sample and inspect the packed bulk. Toys and games we source

Soft toys

Plush or knitted toys with polyester fibre fill. For under-3s, eyes and noses must pass torque, tension and small parts tests; embroidered features remove the risk. State fabric, fill weight and whether height is measured sitting or standing.

Puzzles

Jigsaw and floor puzzles in printed board cut with a steel die, or wooden inset puzzles. Specify piece count, finished size, board thickness in mm, ink and varnish. Pieces for under-3s must be too large for the small parts cylinder.

Plastic toys

Injection and blow-moulded toys, from rattles to ride-ons, in PP, PE or ABS. A new shape needs a steel mould, a one-time cost. Name the resin and masterbatch, and ask for phthalate and heavy metal results per material and colour.

Wooden toys

Stacking, pull-along and learning toys in solid wood, plywood or MDF. Specify species, moisture content and paint. Coatings need EN 71-3 or ASTM F963 heavy element results per colour as applied, edges must pass sharp edge tests.

Board games

Printed boards, card decks, dice, tokens and pawns in a set box. Specify board and card stock in gsm, print finish, component list and box strength. Games with small parts are graded 3 and up and carry the matching warning.

Festive decorations

Ornaments, garlands, stockings and seasonal figures in felt, jute, paper, wood or glass. EU toy rules list decorations for festivities as not toys, but general product safety applies, and a piece with play value may be treated as a toy.

How to brief a toy manufacturer in Bangladesh

Age grade
State the youngest user in months or years. Under 36 months brings the small parts, torque and tension tests, sets the warnings on the pack and must agree with the design.
Market and standard
EN 71 parts 1 to 3 with CE marking for the EU, ASTM F963 and CPSIA for the US, or ISO 8124 where your buyer accepts it. Say which before quoting, so the seller tests once.
Materials
Fabric, fill, resin, wood or board, each named. A material change can void a test report, recycled fill or resin needs its own results, and textiles can carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100.
Chemical limits
Migration of elements to EN 71-3, phthalates, and lead in paint and substrate for the US, plus your restricted substances list, tested per material and colour.
Labels and warnings
CE mark, the importer's name and address, batch code and age warning in each market's language, and barcodes. US children's products need permanent tracking labels.
Tests and who pays
Name the tests, the accredited lab and who pays. If a quote just says 'tested', ask which standard, which parts and which lab. Reports are per item, so colourways multiply the cost.

Toy safety standards and certificates

EN 71-1, EN 71-2, EN 71-3
Mechanical and physical properties, flammability and migration of certain elements. Under EU toy safety law they support CE marking and the EU declaration of conformity.
ASTM F963 and CPSIA
US toy safety, lead, phthalate and tracking label rules. Children's products for ages 12 and under need tests at a CPSC-accepted lab, and the importer issues a Children's Product Certificate.
ISO 8124
The international toy safety series, similar in scope to EN 71: mechanical properties, flammability and migration of certain elements. Ask which parts the report covers.
Small parts rule
Toys for children under 3 must not have parts that fit the small parts cylinder, in EU and US rules alike, even after drop, torque and pull tests.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Product class I covers textile articles for babies up to 36 months, which suits soft toys for under-3s. Many retailers also ask for a recent social audit of the maker.

What moves the price of a toy

  • Size and materials: fabric pile, fill weight, resin grade, wood species and board thickness.
  • Tooling: a new plastic shape or puzzle cut needs a mould or die, a one-time cost that small runs carry.
  • Testing: a full EN 71 or ASTM F963 set costs about the same for 500 pieces or 50,000, and each colourway adds chemical tests.
  • Packaging: printed boxes, windows and inserts in several languages can cost as much as a simple toy.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: samples usually take two to four weeks, longer when a new mould is cut, and bulk 45 to 90 days from sample approval. Each round of lab testing usually adds one to two weeks. Seasonal ranges must ship months before the season, so fix the latest ship date first. Roptan confirms the dates in the quote.

Buying toys and games for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), or FCA Dhaka airport for samples and urgent lots. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, certificate of origin, a REX statement on origin for EU GSP or UK DCTS paperwork, test reports naming your item, and what your technical file needs for CE marking. We inspect the packed bulk to AQL under ISO 2859-1. Payment is usually a deposit with the balance against documents, or a letter of credit.

Questions buyers ask

Which safety tests does a toy need for Europe and the US?

For the EU, at least EN 71-1, 71-2 and 71-3, with CE marking and a declaration of conformity. For the US, ASTM F963 and CPSIA tests at a CPSC-accepted lab, and a Children's Product Certificate. Chemistry sets add EN 71-4, and electric toys EN IEC 62115.

What makes a toy suitable for under-3s?

It passes the small parts test, and attached eyes, noses and trims pass torque and tension tests. Embroidered faces on soft toys remove the small parts risk. Toys not meant for under-3s carry the 0 to 3 age warning symbol.

What mistakes do first-time toy buyers make?

Choosing the age grade after the toy is designed. Testing the sample but not the bulk. Using plastic eyes on baby toys. Forgetting warnings, the importer's address and barcodes on the pack. And treating a report for a similar toy as proof for their own.

Do tests have to be repeated for each order?

Often, yes. US children's products need periodic testing and a new test when materials change. In Europe, a new colour, resin or paint means new chemical tests. We check each report matches your model, colour and lot, not an older version.

How do puzzles and board games survive humid shipping?

Specify board moisture at packing, shrink wrap on each box, silica gel in cartons and container desiccants. Warped boards and curled cards come from moisture picked up between the factory and the port.

How soon will I hear back about toys and games?
