Buying pipes and fittings in Bangladesh

Pipes and fittings we source

MS pipes

Mild steel pipe to ASTM A53 or API 5L, welded (ERW) or seamless pipe, in schedules such as SCH 40 and SCH 80, for fire lines, steam, compressed air, gas and structures. It rusts, so it is painted or coated.

GI pipes

Steel pipe hot-dip galvanised to BS 1387, now EN 10255, in light, medium or heavy series, threaded and socketed, for water supply, fire lines, railings and scaffolding. Iron-rich groundwater scales and corrodes it over the years.

PPR pipes

Polypropylene random copolymer pipe to DIN 8077 and 8078, joined by heat fusion, for hot and cold water in buildings. The pressure class, PN 10 to PN 25, sets wall thickness and price; use PN 20 or higher for hot water.

UPVC pipes

Rigid PVC pipe for cold water, drainage, rainwater, tube well casing and cable conduit, joined with solvent cement. Light and rust-free, but it softens with heat, so never use it for hot water.

HDPE pipes

High density polyethylene pipe to ISO 4427 in PE100 or PE80, graded by SDR and joined by butt fusion or electrofusion. It bends and does not corrode, so it suits buried mains, irrigation and settling ground; small sizes come in coils.

Fittings and flanges

Elbows, tees, reducers and couplings for every pipe type: buttweld fittings to ASME B16.9, flanges to ASME B16.5 or EN 1092-1, malleable iron threaded fittings for GI, and fusion or solvent fittings for plastics. Match material, class and thread to the pipe.

What to tell a pipe fittings supplier in Bangladesh

Service and test pressure: State the fluid, working pressure and highest temperature, and the site hydrostatic test, often 1.5 times working pressure. Material and wall thickness follow from these.
Size convention: Steel pipe is ordered by nominal bore and wall schedule; plastic pipe by outside diameter in mm and SDR or PN. The two systems do not match size for size.
Standard and grade: Name them, for example ASTM A53 Grade B, API 5L, BS 1387 medium, DIN 8077 and 8078 PN 20, or ISO 4427 PE100 SDR 11. Quotes to different standards cannot be compared.
Threads, ends and joints: Specify plain, bevelled or threaded ends and the joint: welded, threaded, grooved, flanged, solvent cement or fusion. Say BSP or NPT; the two threads look alike but do not seal together.
Full bill of quantities: Send every line: metres per size, elbows, tees, reducers, valves, flanges, gaskets, bolts and supports. A pipe-only quote hides much of the cost.
Water and ground: Iron-rich groundwater, common in many districts, scales and corrodes GI, so PPR, UPVC or HDPE usually last longer for drinking water; saline coastal soil around Khulna needs HDPE or coated steel.
Delivery lots: Give the site address and access, and whether you want everything at once or in lots as the work progresses, so plastic pipe does not sit in the sun.

Pipe standards and certificates to ask for

ASTM A53 and API 5L: Welded and seamless steel pipe for general service, and line pipe for oil and gas with extra testing. Ask for a mill test certificate to EN 10204 type 3.1 with chemistry, tensile results and hydrostatic test, tied to heat numbers.
BS 1387, now EN 10255: Steel tubes for threading and galvanising in light, medium and heavy series, marked with brown, blue and red colour bands. Ask for the series and the zinc coating.
DIN 8077 and 8078, ISO 4427 and ISO 1452: PPR pipe dimensions and quality tests; polyethylene and PVC-U pipe for water supply. For PE100, SDR 11 is rated PN 16 and SDR 17 is PN 10.
ASME B16.5, ASME B16.9 and EN 1092-1: Flanges, buttweld fittings and PN flanges. ASME Class 150 and EN PN 16 flanges generally do not bolt together, so use one standard on both sides of a joint.

What moves the price of pipes and fittings

Raw material: steel coil prices set MS and GI pipe, resin prices set plastic pipe, and both move with the exchange rate.
Wall thickness: a heavier schedule, series, PN or SDR means more material in every metre.
Standard and testing: API 5L and certified pipe cost more than general-purpose pipe.
Zinc coating: a heavier zinc coat on GI costs more but lasts longer.
Fittings share: short runs with many bends make fittings a large part of the bill.

Lead times and delivery

Common sizes of MS, GI, PPR and UPVC pipe from stock in Dhaka and Chattogram (Chittagong) usually arrive within a week. Large diameters, heavy schedules, seamless pipe, API 5L, forged flanges and long HDPE lengths typically take four to ten weeks when imported or made to order. Stock items sell by the length; mill orders need larger minimums. Roptan confirms dates and minimums for each line in the quote.

Quotes are for delivery to your site unless you ask for an ex-warehouse price. Pipes travel in bundles on trucks long enough for 6 m lengths, with end caps to keep dirt and water out. Roptan checks certificates, markings, wall thickness and fittings against the order before dispatch, and you receive the certificates, a packing list and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Your contractor, or the seller where it offers installation, installs and pressure tests the lines.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between MS pipe and GI pipe?

MS (mild steel) pipe is black steel for fire, steam, air and structural lines. GI pipe is the same steel with a hot-dip zinc coating, threaded for water. For drinking water, many buildings now use PPR or UPVC, because GI corrodes and scales in iron-rich water.

Do you work with MS pipe importers for API 5L pipe?

Yes. We source API 5L and ASTM A53 pipe from importers' stock or as a new import, with a mill test certificate to EN 10204 type 3.1 showing chemistry, tensile tests and hydrostatic test. State grade, size, schedule and ERW or seamless pipe.

Which pipe should I use for hot water in a building?

PPR at PN 20 or PN 25 is the usual choice: heat-fused joints, no corrosion and pressure classes for hot water. UPVC softens as it heats, so it is for cold water and drainage only. GI works but rusts inside over time. Pressure test before closing walls.

Should I compare pipe prices per metre or per kilogram?

Per metre for plastic pipe at a stated pressure class. For steel, per kilogram, or per metre with the weight shown. Check weight per metre against the standard: pipe lighter than its schedule has a thinner wall, and that is where many low quotes save money.

Is HDPE better than UPVC for a buried water main?

Often, in soft or settling ground: HDPE bends, its fused joints do not pull apart and it does not corrode. UPVC is lighter to handle and joins quickly with solvent cement or rubber rings. Your design engineer decides; we source either, to ISO 4427 or ISO 1452.

How soon will I hear back about pipes and fittings?
