Buying garnet abrasive in Bangladesh

Garnet is a hard, heavy mineral crushed into sharp grains. Blasters use it to strip rust and old paint from ship hulls, tanks and steel structures before painting; waterjet shops feed fine garnet into a high-pressure water stream to cut steel, stone and glass. Buyers are shipyards in Chattogram (Chittagong), Narayanganj and Khulna, fabricators in Gazipur and waterjet shops in Dhaka. Most garnet is imported, so judge it on grading, cleanliness and cost per square metre.

Garnet abrasive we source

Garnet 20/40 mesh

Coarse almandine garnet, roughly 0.4 to 0.85 mm, for heavy rust, mill scale and thick old coatings on hulls, tanks and structural steel. It cuts fast and leaves a deeper anchor profile, so check the profile your paint allows.

Garnet 30/60 mesh

The general-purpose grade, roughly 0.25 to 0.6 mm, for new steel, light rust and maintenance painting. Finer grains give more impacts per kilogram, so it often cleans thin coatings faster than 20/40 and leaves a moderate profile.

Garnet 80 mesh waterjet

Fine garnet of around 0.18 mm, the common abrasive for waterjet cutting of steel, stone, glass and tiles. It must be dry, tightly screened and free of oversize grains that block the mixing tube, or cutting speed drops.

Recycled garnet

Used garnet recovered, cleaned of dust and paint and screened back to size, for blast rooms with recovery. It costs less per tonne, but check fines, conductivity and chlorides on the report, since spent abrasive carries salts.

Steel grit

Angular hardened steel particles for wheel blast machines and blast rooms with recovery, reused many times, so cost per square metre is low where it can be recovered. Specify size, such as G25 or G40, and hardness.

Copper slag

Glassy slag from copper smelting, used once for open blasting of hulls and large structures. Low purchase price but high consumption, dust and disposal. Ask for ISO 11126-3 results and a heavy metal analysis.

What to tell a garnet supplier in Bangladesh

Abrasive and mesh
Name the abrasive and mesh, for example 30/60 garnet or 80 mesh waterjet, and ISO 11126-10 as the specification for blasting garnet. Loose size ranges change consumption and finish.
Surface target
Give the cleanliness grade, such as Sa 2½ to ISO 8501-1, and the profile in microns from your paint data sheet, for example 50 to 75 µm. The mesh follows from these.
Blasting method
Open blasting on site, a blast room with recovery, or an automatic machine. Recovery decides whether steel grit or recycled garnet pays back.
Salts for coastal yards
In Chattogram and Khulna, ask for conductivity and water-soluble chloride results per lot (ISO 11127-6 and 11127-7). Salts left on steel by dirty abrasive make new paint blister.
Waterjet details
Give the mixing tube size and the materials and thicknesses you cut. The mesh must match the tube and arrive free of oversize grains.
Packing and storage
Choose 25 kg bags on pallets or one-tonne jumbo bags, and plan covered storage. Damp abrasive from monsoon storage clogs blast pots and hoses.
Monthly use and call-offs
Give tonnes per month and your docking or shutdown dates. Container lots cost less per tonne but tie up cash and storage.

ISO 11126-10 and ISO 11127
The specification for almandite garnet blast-cleaning abrasive, and the test methods behind it: particle size (part 2), moisture (part 5), conductivity (part 6) and water-soluble chlorides (part 7). Ask for results per lot.
ISO 11126-3, ISO 11124-3 and SAE J444
The specification for copper refinery slag abrasive, the specification for high-carbon cast steel grit, and the size designations such as G25 and G40 used to order grit.
ISO 8501-1 and ISO 8503
Visual cleanliness grades such as Sa 2½, and surface profile comparators: the acceptance tests the paint inspector applies to blasted steel.

What moves the price of garnet and other abrasives

  • Mineral and origin: garnet, steel grit and copper slag differ widely per tonne, and so do garnet sources.
  • Grading and washing: tight screening, waterjet quality and washed, low-chloride grades cost more to produce.
  • Reuse: an abrasive you can recycle costs more per tonne but less per square metre cleaned.
  • Freight, packing and exchange rate: most abrasive is imported in containers and paid for in foreign currency; small bags cost more than jumbo bags.
  • Disposal: spent abrasive mixed with old paint must be collected and disposed of, and single-use abrasives leave more.

Lead times and delivery

Bagged 20/40 and 30/60 garnet and copper slag from stock in Chattogram or Dhaka usually arrive within a week. Waterjet grades, recycled garnet, steel grit in special sizes and full container lots are often imported to order and typically take six to ten weeks. Minimums are usually a pallet or one tonne from stock and a full container for direct imports. Roptan confirms dates and minimums in the quote.

Quotes are for delivery to your yard, workshop or site unless you ask for an ex-warehouse price. Bags and jumbo bags travel on covered trucks to Chattogram, Narayanganj, Khulna, Dhaka and Gazipur with a packing list, and bulk loads with a weighbridge slip. Questions buyers ask

Which garnet mesh do I need for blasting?

Start from the profile your paint system needs. 20/40 mesh cuts a deeper profile and removes heavy rust, mill scale and thick coatings; 30/60 gives a finer profile and cleans lighter work faster. Check the result with replica tape or a profile comparator before full production.

Is garnet worth the higher price over copper slag?

Often, where you can recover it. Garnet breaks down less, contains very little free silica and can be reused several times, so its cost per square metre can beat a cheaper tonne of slag, which is used once and leaves more waste. For open blasting with no recovery, slag may cost less. Compare both on a trial area.

Can I use river sand instead of garnet?

It costs less to buy but more in other ways. Sand contains free silica, and its dust can cause silicosis in blasters. It also breaks down quickly into dust and cleans slowly. Garnet makes less dust, holds its size and can often be cleaned and reused.

Why does humidity matter when blasting in Bangladesh?

Blasted steel rusts quickly in damp air. Blast and paint only when the steel is at least 3 °C above the dew point, and coat before flash rust appears. Keep the abrasive dry too, because damp grains clog pots and hoses. In the monsoon, dehumidified enclosures help.

Can the abrasive affect my paint warranty?

Yes. Paint makers set the cleanliness, profile and salt limits their warranty depends on. Abrasive with high chlorides or the wrong size can leave salts or a shallow profile under the coating. Match the abrasive to the paint data sheet and keep the lot reports with your inspection records.

How soon will I hear back about garnet abrasive?
