Buying batteries in Bangladesh

Bangladesh makes lead-acid batteries for cars, trucks, motorcycles, IPS units, solar systems and battery-run three-wheelers, and some makers assemble lithium packs from imported cells. Importers abroad buy starter and motorcycle batteries for the replacement trade, deep cycle batteries for solar and backup, and parts for assembly. At home, dealers, fleets, solar installers and telecom tower operators in Dhaka, Gazipur and Chattogram (Chittagong) buy in volume.

Two batteries with the same label can differ in plates, lead content and age. Roptan finds the battery manufacturer in Bangladesh that fits your order, checks type test reports against the model quoted, records date codes and open-circuit voltage before dispatch, and delivers to your site or ships FOB Chattogram. You deal with Roptan only, or post the requirement on our board.

Batteries we source

Automotive batteries

Starter batteries for cars, pickups, buses and trucks, flooded or sealed maintenance-free, in DIN, JIS or BCI case sizes. Choose by Ah at the 20-hour rate, cranking amps, case size and terminal layout for the vehicles you serve.

IPS and UPS batteries

Tall tubular flooded batteries suit IPS units that discharge deeply through load shedding, but need topping up with distilled water. Sealed VRLA (AGM) batteries suit UPS and telecom racks on float, but lose life faster in hot rooms.

Solar batteries

Deep cycle tubular, gel or lithium batteries for solar home systems, mini-grids, telecom sites and hybrid inverters. Cycle life matters more than starting power, so ask for cycles at a stated depth of discharge.

Motorcycle batteries

Small 12 V batteries for motorcycles and scooters, sold dry-charged with an acid pack for filling at sale, or factory-activated and sealed. Match capacity, case size and terminal position to the models your customers ride.

Lithium battery packs

Packs of lithium cells, often lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), with a battery management system (BMS), for solar storage, e-bikes, three-wheelers and backup power. Cell grade and origin set most of the price, so ask where the cells come from.

Battery parts and separators

Separators are thin porous sheets that keep the plates apart while letting acid through. Assemblers also buy polypropylene containers and lids, vent plugs, grids and terminals, against a drawing or approved sample, with separator thickness, porosity and resistance stated.

How to brief a battery manufacturer in Bangladesh

Duty
Say whether the battery starts engines, cycles deeply every day or waits on float. Starter, deep cycle and standby designs use different plates, and the wrong one fails early.
Voltage and capacity rate
Give nominal voltage and capacity in Ah at a named rate, such as C20 for starter batteries or C10 and C100 for solar.
Cranking and weight
For starter batteries, ask for cold cranking amps with the test standard named, since EN, SAE and JIS figures differ, plus polarity and filled weight.
Heat and cycle life
Heat in engine bays and closed battery rooms shortens lead-acid life. Ask for cycle life at a named depth of discharge and temperature, and temperature-compensated charging on IPS and solar systems.
Charge state and age
Batteries self-discharge in storage. Ask for the date code on each unit, the oldest date code you will accept, and an open-circuit voltage reading before dispatch.
Label, warranty and price basis
Your brand or the maker's, the marks your market requires, the warranty basis, full replacement or pro rata, the Incoterm, and whether the price moves with the lead price.

Battery standards and test reports to ask for

IEC 60095-1
Lead-acid starter batteries: requirements and tests for capacity, cranking, charge retention and endurance. Ask for a type test report on the exact model quoted.
IEC 60896-21 and 60896-22
Test methods and requirements for valve-regulated stationary lead-acid batteries used in UPS and telecom. Ask for the report behind any design life claim.
IEC 61427-1
Batteries for off-grid photovoltaic storage, tested for capacity, cycling endurance and charge retention.
IEC 62133-2, IEC 62619 and UN 38.3
Safety of portable lithium batteries, safety of industrial and storage lithium packs, and the UN transport tests every lithium design must pass before it ships, with a test summary.
Dangerous goods papers and SDS
Flooded lead-acid batteries ship as Class 8 dangerous goods and lithium packs as Class 9 (UN 3480 or UN 3481) under the IMDG Code. Ask for the declaration and a safety data sheet to GHS.

What moves the price of a battery

  • Lead: the main material cost, so lead-acid quotes follow the international lead price and hold only briefly.
  • Plate design: tubular plates for deep cycling cost more than flat plates of the same Ah.
  • Technology: AGM and gel cost more than flooded; lithium costs more again, set by cell grade, origin and the BMS.
  • Freight: batteries fill a container by weight, and filled or lithium types add dangerous goods charges.
  • Private label: your artwork, cartons and market marks, spread over fewer units on a small run.

Lead times and delivery

Standard starter and IPS models under the maker's brand are often in stock and ship within one to two weeks. Private label runs typically take 30 to 60 days after artwork and sample approval, and lithium packs built from imported cells about 6 to 10 weeks. New type tests, case moulds and dangerous goods bookings add time. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum order in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to dealers, fleets, factories, solar and tower sites in Dhaka, Chattogram, Gazipur and Narayanganj, upright with terminals protected. For IPS, UPS and solar banks the seller installs and commissions, with a discharge test at your load. You receive the test sheet, a serial and date-code list, warranty cards and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying batteries for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram, usually by the full container, palletised with terminals protected. The seller supplies the dangerous goods declaration, marks and SDS for filled and lithium batteries, with the UN 38.3 test summary for lithium packs. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, test reports and a REX statement on origin for EU GSP. We inspect labels, weight and open-circuit voltage before loading.

What we check for this order

  • Trade licence, ERC and BSTICurrent, in the name on the quote, with BSTI certification where the product requires it for sale in Bangladesh.
  • Type tests for the model quotedCapacity, cranking or cycle life reports from the factory lab or an accredited third party, for the exact model, not a sister model.
  • Fresh, charged stockDate codes and open-circuit voltage recorded on the lot before dispatch, so aged stock is caught before it leaves.
  • A plant visit and written warrantyBefore the first order we see plate making, formation and the test bench, and get warranty and replacement terms in writing.

Questions buyers ask

Which capacity figure should I compare between two battery quotes?

Ah at the same discharge rate and temperature. A battery sold as 100 Ah at C20 holds less when discharged faster, as in an IPS, so ask for the C10 figure too. For starter batteries, compare cold cranking amps under one named standard, and filled weight: less weight usually means less lead.

Should an IPS use tubular or flat plate batteries?

Tubular, if the IPS carries load through daily outages: tubular positive plates hold their active material through deep cycling and usually last longer. Flat plate batteries cost less and suit occasional backup. Size the bank for your backup hours at the real load, not the inverter rating.

Lead-acid or lithium: which should I buy for solar or backup?

It depends on the duty. Lead-acid costs less to buy and suits engine starting and occasional backup. Lithium iron phosphate weighs less, takes deep daily cycling and usually lasts more cycles, so it can cost less over its life in solar storage. It needs a matched charger and a BMS.

Should I buy dry-charged or filled batteries?

It depends on storage and sales. Dry-charged batteries ship without acid, so they are not dangerous goods and keep longer in store, but need filling and a first charge before sale. Filled batteries are ready to sell but lose charge in store and ship as Class 8 dangerous goods.

Can I buy batteries under my own brand, and what is the minimum?

Yes. Most makers offer private label on standard models: your artwork on case and carton, their plates and tests inside, above a minimum per model, often mixed across models in a full container. Approve a labelled sample and agree who handles warranty claims.

How soon will I hear back about batteries?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
