Line interactive UPS

Passes mains through with voltage correction and switches to battery in a few milliseconds when mains fails. Suits desktops, point of sale and small network kits on a fairly stable supply, not medical, laboratory or industrial equipment.

Industrial UPS

Built for plants, substations and process control, often with an isolation transformer and sturdier cabinets, where the UPS sits near machines in heat and dust. Specify output in kW, battery DC voltage and the room conditions.

Modular UPS

Power modules slot into a frame, so capacity grows with the load and one spare module gives N+1 redundancy. It saves floor space in Dhaka data rooms, and a failed module is swapped without shutdown.

UPS batteries

An IPS (instant power supply) is the home inverter with a large battery for fans, lights and a router through load shedding. It switches over with a short break, so it does not replace a UPS for computers. Choose pure sine wave output.

What a UPS supplier in Bangladesh needs to size it

Load in kW and kVA: List the equipment with its power in kW, plus growth. Output power factor runs from 0.8 to 1.0, so the same kVA can mean different kW; size so the UPS runs below about 80 percent.
Backup time: Minutes at your actual load, not at full rating. Where a generator takes over, 5 to 15 minutes is a common bridge; longer backup multiplies battery cost.
Topology and class: Online double conversion, line interactive or modular, with the IEC 62040-3 classification code of the model quoted, and whether you need N+1 redundancy or two units in parallel.
Phase and input window: Single or three phase in and out at 50 Hz, and the input voltage and frequency range before the unit goes to battery. A wide window saves battery cycles where the grid swings.
Generator match: If a generator feeds the UPS, give its rating and ask for the UPS input current distortion (THDi). A low-distortion IGBT rectifier lets a smaller set run it.
Bypass and monitoring: A static bypass and an external maintenance bypass switch for servicing without shutdown, alarms, a monitoring card and a safe shutdown signal for servers.
Battery and room: Battery type, design life and room temperature. VRLA life roughly halves for every 10 °C above 25 °C, so cool the room, and say whether batteries go in a cabinet or on racks.

Standards and acceptance tests for UPS systems

IEC 62040-3: Performance and test methods, including the VFI, VI and VFD classes: VFI is true online, output independent of mains voltage and frequency. Ask for the classification code and type test report for the model.
IEC 62040-1: Safety requirements for UPS. Ask for a certificate from an accredited lab naming the model and rating quoted.
Battery data sheet: Type, capacity in ampere-hours, design life at a stated temperature (usually 20 or 25 °C) and a runtime table. Ask for the backup calculation at your load.
Battery discharge test: At commissioning, run the UPS on battery at a known load to the stated end voltage, and record the minutes against the quoted backup time.

What moves the price of a UPS over its life

Rating in kW: a unity power factor UPS gives more kW for the same kVA, so compare kW.
Topology: online double conversion costs more than line interactive; modular and industrial designs cost more again.
Backup time: longer runtime needs more batteries, racks and floor space, and batteries are replaced within the UPS's life.
Battery chemistry: LiFePO4 costs more at purchase than VRLA, needs less space and usually lasts longer.
Efficiency: every point lost in the UPS is paid for in electricity and cooling for as long as it runs.
Installation and service: cabling, bypass panel, monitoring card, preventive visits and fault response time.

Do I need an online UPS or a line interactive UPS?

Online for servers, medical equipment, machine controls and anything that must not see a break or a poor supply: it rebuilds the output all the time, so there is no transfer gap. Line interactive costs less and suits desktops and small offices on a stable supply. Where voltage swings often, an online unit also saves battery cycles.

What is the difference between a UPS and an IPS?

An IPS is a home inverter with a large battery, sized for fans and lights through load shedding; its short switch-over does not matter to those loads. A UPS protects equipment that cannot take a break, such as computers and medical devices, and an online UPS also cleans up the supply.

How long do UPS batteries last in Bangladesh?
