Buying electronic components in Bangladesh
Bangladesh assembles mobile phones, printed circuit boards, LED lighting parts and computer accessories, mostly from imported chips and parts, so a quote is mainly the bill of materials plus assembly, test and freight. Importers abroad buy finished devices and contract PCB assembly. At home, phone and appliance brands, lighting makers and IT distributors in Dhaka and Gazipur buy in volume.
Electronics buying carries two risks: parts that are not what the label says, and boards that pass a quick look but fail in use. How to brief an electronic component manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Files and revision
- Send Gerber files, a BOM with maker part numbers and approved alternates, placement data, drawings and the revision letter. Mixed revisions and missing part numbers cause wrong builds and slow quotes.
- Volumes and sourcing model
- Pilot quantity, first order and yearly volume, and turnkey, where the maker buys all parts, or consigned, where you supply some. Setup and tooling are spread over volume.
- Approved parts and channels
- Say which parts may be substituted and who approves, and require parts from the original maker or authorised distributors.
- Moisture and ESD
- Humidity in Bangladesh matters: ask how moisture-sensitive parts are dry-packed, tracked and baked, and for ESD-controlled handling to IEC 61340-5-1.
- Test plan
- Define optical inspection, X-ray, in-circuit, functional and burn-in tests, the fixtures and who pays for them, and the pass criteria. Untested boards move the failure to your customer.
- Market compliance
- State where the product will be sold: EMC, RoHS, radio, SAR and battery approvals differ by market.
Workmanship standards, tests and compliance
- IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001
- Acceptability of electronic assemblies, and the soldering requirements behind it. Agree the class in the order and inspect to it.
- J-STD-020 and J-STD-033
- Moisture sensitivity levels for surface-mount parts, and how to pack, store and bake them. Ask how the line tracks floor life.
- IEC 62368-1
- Safety of IT and audio-video equipment, including chargers and adaptors. Ask for the report on the exact model and power rating.
- IEC 62133-2 and UN 38.3
- Safety and transport tests for the lithium batteries in phones, tablets and power banks. Without the UN 38.3 test summary, carriers can refuse the goods.
- RoHS 2011/65/EU, REACH and the Radio Equipment Directive
- Restricted substances, declarations on substances of very high concern, and radio approval under 2014/53/EU for EU-bound devices.
- BTRC type approval
- Phones and other radio equipment sold in Bangladesh need type approval from the telecom regulator, BTRC.
Lead times and delivery
Standard accessories and stock items are often available within 2 to 4 weeks. PCB assembly samples and first articles typically take 2 to 4 weeks once parts are in hand, and bulk runs 3 to 8 weeks from approved files and a full kit. Chips with long factory lead times, new test fixtures and market certification add time, sometimes months for a new device. Buying electronic components for export
For importers we quote FOB Chattogram for sea freight, or FCA Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka, for small, high-value lots by air. Devices with lithium batteries ship under UN 3481 with the UN 38.3 test summary. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, certificate of origin, a REX statement on origin for EU GSP, test reports, RoHS and REACH declarations, and AQL inspection reports to ISO 2859-1.
Questions buyers ask
How do I check a flash drive or memory card has its stated capacity?
Write the whole device with test data and read it back: fake-capacity devices report a large size but overwrite data once the real flash is full. Also measure sustained write speed with a large file against the stated class. We run these checks on samples from each lot.
Which IPC class should I order for a PCB assembly?
Class 2 suits most consumer and industrial products. Choose class 3 when failure is unacceptable, as in medical or safety equipment, and expect a higher price and more inspection. Class 1 suits simple, low-cost goods. Put the class in the order, not only in conversation.
How do I compare PCB assembly quotes, and can I supply my own parts?
Split each quote into parts, assembly per board, one-time tooling and test, and check the BOM was priced with the same part numbers, channels and volume; a low quote often uses broker parts or skips a test. Consigned builds, where you ship some parts, are common: the maker charges for assembly and test plus a small attrition allowance for placement losses.
Why does humidity matter in electronics assembly?
Plastic IC packages absorb moisture from humid air. In reflow, that moisture turns to steam and can crack the package or lift pads. Moisture-sensitive parts are kept dry-packed, their floor life tracked under J-STD-033, and baked when exposed too long. Ask the line how it does this.
Do phones assembled in Bangladesh need approval before sale abroad?
Yes, in most markets. Radio, EMC, safety, SAR and battery approvals depend on the market and must cover the final model and software; in the EU that is the Radio Equipment Directive. BTRC approval covers sale in Bangladesh only. We check which reports the seller holds and which must be added.
How soon will I hear back about electronic components?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
