Laundry soap

Hard bars for washing clothes by hand, made by saponifying oils and fats, often with fillers. Specify total fatty matter (TFM) as a percentage, bar weight, moisture, free alkali and colour, and whether the base is palm, tallow or a blend.

Beauty soap

Toilet soap milled from soap noodles with fragrance and colour. Specify TFM, vegetable or tallow base, fragrance, bar weight after drying, wrapper and carton. In the EU, toilet soap is a cosmetic under Regulation (EC) 1223/2009.

Detergent powder

Powders built on LAS surfactant with builders such as sodium carbonate, phosphate or zeolite, and fillers. Specify active matter, phosphate content, bulk density in g/l, moisture, enzymes and optical brightener; machine-wash powders are usually low foaming.

Liquid detergent

Surfactants dissolved in water, with fragrance, colour and preservative, for laundry, hand wash and floors. Specify active matter, viscosity, pH and bottle or pouch, and ask for a stability check in heat, since some liquids separate or thin out.

Dishwashing products

Dishwashing bars with a fine abrasive, pastes, and liquids based on LAS or SLES for homes, hotels and kitchens. Specify active matter, pH for liquids, abrasive fineness for bars, fragrance and pack; dishwasher machines need separate low-foam products.

Surfactants

Raw materials for detergent and cosmetic makers. For LABSA (linear alkylbenzene sulphonic acid) specify active matter, free oil, free sulphuric acid and colour; for SLES, active matter and 1,4-dioxane. LABSA is corrosive, so it usually ships as dangerous goods.

What to tell a soap and detergent manufacturer in Bangladesh

Product and use
Laundry, beauty or dishwashing, hand or machine use, and where it will be sold. Hard water needs more builder, and each market sets its own label rules.
Formula targets
TFM for soap, active matter for detergents, pH, moisture and any phosphate limit, as minimums or ranges with the test method named.
Oil base
Palm, palm kernel, coconut or tallow, and whether you need a vegetable-only or halal declaration, or certified sustainable palm oil.
Net weight and drying
Bars lose moisture after packing, faster in heat, so agree whether the weight applies at packing or at sale, the tolerance, and the net quantity rules BSTI enforces for local sale.
Humidity and caking
Detergent powder cakes and soap sweats in monsoon humidity. Ask for moisture limits, laminated or lined packs, and cartons stored off the floor.
Fragrance and colour
Fragrance type and dose, a colour standard, and the allergen and IFRA papers the fragrance needs in your market, all approved on a sample.
Pack and label
Wrapper, pouch or bottle, carton count, languages, ingredient list, batch and expiry, and hazard pictograms where CLP or GHS rules apply.

BSTI certification mark
Needed for sale in Bangladesh where the product is on BSTI's mandatory list. Ask for the licence covering the exact product and pack.
Safety data sheet to GHS
Required for every product and surfactant before the first delivery, with composition, hazards, storage and transport classification.
Regulation (EC) 1223/2009
EU cosmetics law, which covers toilet soap: an EU responsible person, a safety report, notification before sale and manufacture to GMP such as ISO 22716.
EU detergent rules and CLP
Surfactants must pass ready biodegradability tests such as OECD 301, packs carry ingredient labelling, phosphates are limited in consumer laundry and dishwasher detergents, and hazard labels follow CLP.
Halal certificate
From the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh or another body your buyers accept, covering the fats, fragrance and additives, with the site and date.

What moves the price of soap and detergents

  • Oils and fats: palm and other oil prices set much of a soap's cost, and palm oil is imported.
  • TFM and active matter: more real soap or surfactant costs more per kilogram than filler, but does more work.
  • Surfactant markets: LABSA and SLES prices follow petrochemical and oleochemical markets and the exchange rate.
  • Fragrance and additives: fragrance type and dose, enzymes and brighteners add cost; fillers lower it.
  • Pack and run size: printed wrappers, pouches, bottles, small packs and short runs per fragrance cost more.

Lead times and delivery

Typical ranges: samples of a standard formula in one to two weeks; own-brand runs usually three to six weeks after sample and artwork approval, longer when printed wrappers, pouches, bottles or stamping dies are new. Surfactants in stock usually ship in one to three weeks. A new formula or fragrance needs trial batches first. Roptan confirms the dates in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to your warehouse, hotel, hospital, laundry or factory in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Chattogram or elsewhere, in cartons, bags, drums or IBCs, with the certificate of analysis, safety data sheet, packing list and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Soap and powder are kept dry, liquids stacked within the carton limit, and corrosive surfactants travel labelled on vehicles fit for chemicals.

Buying soap and detergents for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) in 20 or 40 ft containers, soap and powder in cartons, liquids in bottles, drums or IBCs. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, the seller's ERC, the safety data sheet, a certificate of analysis per batch, a halal certificate where needed and dangerous goods declarations for corrosive surfactants. A pre-shipment inspection with AQL sampling to ISO 2859-1 checks weight, labels and packing.

Questions buyers ask

What does TFM mean on a soap?

Total fatty matter: the share of the bar made of fatty acids, as a percentage. Higher TFM usually means more soap and less water or filler, and a bar that lasts longer. Ask for TFM on each batch certificate, tested by a named method, not only printed on the wrapper.

How should detergent powder quotes be compared?

On active matter, not pack weight. Two powders at the same price per kilogram can differ in active content, builders and filler, so the lower-priced one may need a larger dose. Ask for active matter on the certificate of analysis and compare the price per unit of active.

Is toilet soap a cosmetic?

In the EU, yes: soap for skin cleansing falls under Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, with a responsible person, a safety report and notification. In the US, true soap sold only as soap is outside FDA cosmetic rules, but claims such as moisturising make it a cosmetic. Check your market's definition before artwork.

Can surfactants like LABSA be shipped by sea?

Yes, usually as dangerous goods, since LABSA is corrosive and its safety data sheet gives the transport class. It travels in approved drums or IBCs with hazard labels and a dangerous goods declaration, and the shipping line must accept the booking. We confirm packing and booking before quoting freight.

Can we order soap under our own brand?

Yes, from makers that pack private label: their formula or yours, in your pack and artwork. A trial batch is approved first, and bulk runs to that standard. Printed wrappers usually need several thousand pieces per design, and the quote states who owns the formula and leftover packs. Roptan confirms the minimum.

How soon will I hear back about soap and detergents?
