Buying total stations in Bangladesh

A total station measures angles and distances from one set-up and turns them into coordinates, so a surveyor can map a plot or set out columns, roads and pipelines. In Bangladesh they are bought by survey firms, civil contractors, developers, consultants and universities, from Dhaka and Gazipur to Chattogram, Sylhet and Khulna. Instruments here must hold their accuracy through heat, monsoon rain and humid storage.

A total station supplier in Bangladesh may quote the same accuracy with very different accessories, software and service, so price alone misleads. Send us the work type and the accuracy you need. We turn it into one specification, source from verified sellers, check the serial number against the calibration certificate, confirm the kit, warranty and local service, and deliver. The seller demonstrates the field checks and trains your survey team.

Total stations we source

Total stations

An electronic theodolite with a distance meter and onboard programs for stakeout, resection and area. Specify angular accuracy, commonly 1, 2 or 5 arc seconds, and prism and reflectorless range. Building layout often uses 5 seconds, control surveys 1 or 2.

Auto levels

Optical levels with a compensator for fast height transfer on building and road sites: floor levels, drains and gradients. Specify magnification, commonly 20x to 32x, and accuracy as a standard deviation in mm per km of double-run levelling.

GPS survey receivers

GNSS receivers that track several satellite systems and reach centimetre accuracy in RTK mode with a base station or a correction service, for open plots, roads and land surveys. A base radio is a transmitter, so ask about BTRC approval.

Theodolites

Electronic theodolites measure horizontal and vertical angles without a distance meter. They suit setting out lines, plumbing columns and teaching, at a lower cost than a total station of the same angular accuracy.

Laser distance meters

Handheld meters for rooms, finishes and quantity checks, typically accurate to about 1.5 to 2 mm indoors. They usually carry Class 2 lasers under IEC 60825-1; the dot is hard to see in sunlight, so they do not replace a survey instrument outdoors.

Survey tripods

Tripods with the standard 5/8 inch by 11 thread. Wooden legs damp vibration and move less with heat; aluminium is lighter to carry. Check the head is flat and the clamps hold: a worn tripod spoils a good instrument.

How to brief a total station supplier in Bangladesh

Job and angular accuracy
Say what the instrument is for: building layout, road alignment, control surveys or teaching. Five arc seconds suits general setting out; one or two seconds suit control networks, bridges and long sights.
Distance range and accuracy
Give prism and reflectorless range in metres, and accuracy in the form mm plus ppm, for example 2 mm + 2 ppm to a prism.
Software and data
List the programs you need, such as stakeout, resection and road alignment, and the export formats your office uses, such as CSV or DXF for CAD.
Heat and refraction
Midday heat shimmer bends long sights over hot ground. Plan long control sights for the morning, shade the instrument, and enter temperature and pressure for the ppm correction.
Humidity and fungus
Humid storage grows fungus on lenses. Ask for a case with desiccant, store instruments in a dry cabinet, and never pack them wet after monsoon work.
Rain, dust and power
Specify the IP rating, commonly IP55 to IP66; monsoon fieldwork needs the higher figures. Ask for two batteries per instrument and a charger rated for 50 Hz with surge protection.
The full kit and service
List tripod, prism, pole, spare battery, charger, case and staff. Ask where calibration and repairs are done in Bangladesh, the turnaround, and whether a loan instrument is available.

Calibration, field tests and certificates

ISO 17123-5
The field test procedure for total stations. Ask the seller to run it at handover and give you the results, so your team can repeat it before important work.
ISO 17123-2, 17123-3 and 17123-8
Field tests for levels, theodolites and GNSS receivers in RTK mode. For an auto level, the two-peg test shows the collimation error and is quick to repeat on site.
Calibration certificate
Issued after adjustment, listing serial number, date, errors found and values after adjustment. For traceability, ask for a laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, which is what consultants and auditors accept.
IEC 60825-1 laser class
Sets laser safety classes. Handheld distance meters are usually Class 2; plummets and reflectorless distance meters vary, so check the label and brief users not to stare into the beam.

What moves the price of a total station

  • Angular accuracy: a 1 arc second instrument costs well above a 5 arc second one.
  • Reflectorless range, measuring speed, robotic tracking and automatic target recognition, which let one person run the survey.
  • Software modules and a field controller; for GNSS, constellations, radio modem and base plus rover or rover only.
  • New or refurbished: refurbished units cost less but need a recent calibration certificate and a warranty to be worth buying.
  • Kit and support: accessories, calibration, training, local repair and a loan instrument cost more upfront and less over the years.

Lead times and delivery

Common total station, level and laser meter models are usually in stock in Dhaka and delivered within 1 to 2 weeks, calibrated. Specific models, robotic instruments and GNSS kits with radios typically take 3 to 8 weeks plus customs clearance; recalibration at a service centre usually takes a few days. Roptan confirms dates, what is in the kit and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver to your office or project site anywhere in Bangladesh. At handover the seller checks the instrument with your team: two-face angle readings, a distance against a known baseline, the compensator and the plummet, then trains your surveyors on set-up and data transfer. You receive the calibration certificate for each serial number, the accessory list, software licence, manuals, warranty and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Stock instruments are commonly paid on delivery; imported models often need an advance.

What we check for this order

  • Trade licenceCurrent, and in the name on the quote, so the invoice, warranty and calibration responsibility sit with one seller.
  • Certificate matches the instrumentSerial number, date and results on the calibration certificate checked against the instrument delivered, not a generic model certificate.
  • Warranty and service termsWarranty period, recalibration price, repair turnaround and a loan instrument during repair stated in writing before you approve.
  • Kit, delivery and trainingEvery accessory listed, and delivery, handover field checks and operator training included or priced, so work can start on day one.

Questions buyers ask

Is a 5 second total station enough for building work?

Usually, yes. Building layout and most construction setting out work well with a 5 arc second instrument. Control networks, bridges, tall structures and long traverses need 1 or 2 seconds, because the error at the target grows with distance. Tell us the job and the longest sights; we source to that.

How often should a total station be calibrated?

Typically once a year, and after a fall, a hard knock or a long shipment. Between services, run the two-face check and measure known points before important work, as ISO 17123-5 describes. If readings drift, send it for adjustment rather than correcting by hand.

Is a refurbished total station worth buying?

It can be, with a recent calibration certificate for its serial number, a written warranty and local service. Ask how old it is and whether parts are still available. Avoid units sold as seen: a faulty distance meter can take weeks to repair.

Do I need a total station or a GNSS receiver?

A total station works wherever you can see between points, including inside buildings and under trees. GNSS needs no sight line but needs a clear view of the sky, so it suits open plots, roads and land surveys. Many firms use both; ask for base, rover, controller and poles on one quote.

Can you arrange calibration of an instrument we already own?

Yes, through a seller's service centre. Tell us the model, serial number and any fault. It comes back with a certificate listing the errors found and the values after adjustment; ask for an accredited laboratory if your contract requires it, and a loan unit if the job cannot stop.

How soon will I hear back about total stations?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
