Buying fire doors in Bangladesh

Fire doors hold back fire and smoke long enough for people to leave and for firefighters to work. In Bangladesh they go on stair enclosures, exit routes and plant rooms in garment factories, warehouses, hospitals, hotels and high-rise buildings in Dhaka, Gazipur, Ashulia and Chattogram (Chittagong), often as remediation after a buyer or RSC inspection. A rating belongs to a tested assembly, not to a heavy steel door.

Steel fire doors

A steel leaf and frame with an insulating core, tested as one assembly. Choose the rating from the fire strategy and match it to the wall. Galvanised steel under a powder coat resists humidity better than painted mild steel.

Fire exit doors

Rated doors on escape routes, hung to open in the direction of travel with hardware that opens with one push. Often double leaf in factories; state the clear width, as exit capacity depends on it.

Panic bars

A horizontal bar that releases the latch when pushed anywhere along it, for doors that crowds may reach at once: factory floors, halls and malls. On a fire door, fit a device tested for fire doors, with no mechanical hold-back.

Fire rated glass doors

Glazed doors or vision panels in fire-rated glass, tested in that frame. Integrity-only (E) glass stops flames and hot gases; insulating (EI) glass also limits heat on the safe side, at a higher cost. Cutting a panel in on site ends the rating.

Door closers

A fire door only works when shut, so every rated leaf needs a closer from the door's test evidence. EN 1154 grades closers by power size; fire doors need size 3 or more, wide or heavy leaves higher. Double doors also need a coordinator.

Fire shutters

Rolling steel shutters for loading bays, conveyor openings and wide corridors. They close on a fusible link or a signal from the fire alarm. Ask for test evidence covering your shutter size and a drop test at commissioning.

What to tell a fire door supplier in Bangladesh

Rating and classification: State the rating in minutes, usually 60, 90 or 120, from your consultant's drawings under BNBC 2020 Part 4. Under EN 13501-2, E is integrity, I is insulation and S adds smoke control.
Door schedule: List each opening: location, structural opening in mm, single or double leaf, swing and wall type. A door is certified only in the sizes and wall types its test covers.
Hardware set: List hinges, lock or latch, closer, panic bar or lever, coordinator for pairs, seals and signs. Each item must appear in the door's test evidence; leave nothing as 'standard'.
Gaps and seals: Ask for intumescent and smoke seals where the test used them. NFPA 80 limits gaps on steel doors to about 3 mm at head and edges and 19 mm at the bottom.
Humidity and flooding: Humid air and monsoon water rust door bottoms and frame feet. Ask for galvanised steel under a powder coat, and seal the frame joint at the floor.
Hold-open and locking: Doors held open for traffic need magnetic holders that release on the fire alarm. Electric locks on escape doors must release on the alarm too, and exit doors are never chained while people are inside.
Site measurement and installation: Openings in existing buildings are rarely square. Ask the seller to measure before production, and agree who fixes and grouts frames, fits hardware and adjusts closers.

Fire door tests, listings and labels

EN 1634-1, UL 10C or BS 476-22: The fire resistance test for the door assembly. Ask for the report or listing covering your leaf size, core, glazing and hardware; a report for another door does not count.
EN 13501-2: The European classification that turns test results into classes such as E 60 or EI 90, showing whether heat as well as flame is held back.
EN 1125, EN 179 and EN 1154: EN 1125 covers panic bars, EN 179 lever or push-pad exit devices for staff-only areas, and EN 1154 door closers with power sizes 1 to 7. Hardware should carry the mark and appear in the test report.
NFPA 80: Covers installation, inspection and maintenance of fire doors and shutters: clearances, labels, hardware and a yearly inspection and test.
BNBC 2020 Part 4, FSCD and RSC: Sets where rated doors are needed; Fire Service and Civil Defence checks them for the fire licence; RSC inspects building and fire safety in export garment factories. Ask your inspector what evidence they accept.

What moves the price of a fire door

Rating: a 120 minute door needs a thicker core, better seals and a heavier frame than a 60 minute door.
Test evidence: listed or third-party tested doors cost more than untested copies, and only they pass an inspection.
Size and leaves: double leaves, oversize openings and transom panels add material, and may fall outside the tested range.
Glazing and hardware: insulating EI glass, panic bars, closers, coordinators and electric release can be a large share of the total.
Installation: site measurement, frame grouting, wall repairs and night work in running factories.

Lead times and delivery

Fire doors are made to order after site measurement. Locally fabricated tested designs typically take 3 to 6 weeks; imported listed doors, fire-rated glass and shutters typically take 8 to 14 weeks plus customs clearance. Grouping imported doors into one shipment lowers the cost per door. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote once the openings are measured.

The seller measures every opening, delivers doors marked by location, fixes and grouts frames, hangs the leaves, fits hardware and adjusts closers. Commissioning checks that each door closes and latches from fully open, gaps are within limits and panic hardware releases under a push. You receive a door schedule with each door's number, location and rating, label photos, test evidence, the hardware schedule, the warranty and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Made-to-order doors usually need an advance.

Questions buyers ask

Can a normal steel door be upgraded to a fire door?

No. A fire rating belongs to a tested assembly: leaf, frame, core, seals, glass and hardware together. A door without a label and test evidence cannot be certified on site, however heavy it is. Replace it with a rated assembly sized to the opening.

Which fire rating do I need for each door?

Your fire safety drawings, prepared to BNBC 2020 Part 4, give a rating for each opening. Match the door to the wall: a 120 minute door in a 60 minute wall adds cost without adding safety, and a 60 minute door where 120 was required has to be replaced.

Can I fit my own lock or hinges to a fire door?

Only if they are fire rated and covered by the door's test report. Ordinary hinges or a lock that melts early can let the door fail long before its rating. Ask the seller for the approved hardware list and keep to it for replacements.

Can we keep a fire door open during working hours?

Only with a hold-open device that releases when the fire alarm sounds, so the door closes by itself. Wedges, hooks and chains defeat the rating. Panic devices tested for fire doors have no hold-back, because the door must latch every time it closes.

How are fire doors maintained after installation?

Walk the doors monthly to see that each one closes and latches. NFPA 80 calls for an inspection and test at least once a year: gaps, seals, hinges, closer, hardware and label. Closers need adjustment as they wear.

How soon will I hear back about fire doors?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
