Road and layout: Give road width, length, acceptable pole height and spacing, and any existing poles. The seller's lighting calculation from the fitting's photometric file shows how many lights the road needs.
Lighting level: State the average lux and uniformity you need, or a road lighting class under EN 13201, so quotes are compared on light delivered to the road.

IEC 61215 and IEC 61730: Design qualification and safety of the PV module. Ask for certificates that name the panel model used in the light.
IES LM-79 and LM-80: LM-79 measures lumens, power drawn, efficacy and light distribution of the complete fitting; LM-80 measures LED lumen maintenance. Ask for both lab reports.
IEC 60529 and IEC 62262: IEC 60529 defines IP codes; IP65 or IP66 keeps monsoon rain and dust out of fitting and battery housing. IEC 62262 defines IK impact ratings. Ask for test reports.

Questions buyers ask

Why do quotes for the same wattage differ so much?

Because the printed wattage is often not what the light delivers. Compare battery Wh, panel Wp, real LED watts, lumens and warranty instead. Two lights sold under the same wattage can differ widely in battery and panel size, and so in hours of light per night.

All in one or split: which suits a main road?

For lanes, compounds and estate roads, all in one lights are usually enough: quick to install and harder to steal from. For wide main roads, tall poles or long autonomy, a split system carries a larger panel and battery, faces the panel south and keeps the battery out of the hot head.

Why do solar street lights fail after a year or two?

Usually the battery: undersized for the monsoon, low-grade cells, or overheated in a sealed housing. Other causes are poor controllers, panels facing the wrong way or in tree shade, and dust on the panel. Specify battery Wh, cycle life and operating temperature, an MPPT controller, and cleaning in the dry season.

What pole height and spacing do I need?
