Buying paper in Bangladesh

Paper buyers in Bangladesh are varied: offices, banks and schools buying A4 copy paper, printers in Dhaka and Chattogram (Chittagong) buying offset paper for books, carton plants in Gazipur and Narayanganj buying kraft paper and duplex board, converters buying bulk packaging paper and tissue reels, and publishers buying newsprint. For all of them, price per tonne, GSM accuracy and steady supply decide the real cost.

A paper supplier in Bangladesh must deliver the GSM, grade and moisture you ordered, because humid air and mixed batches cause jams, curl and weak boxes. Send the grade, size, GSM, quantity and delivery schedule by form or chat. Paper we source

A4 copy paper

Cut sheets of 210 × 297 mm in reams of 500, usually 70, 75 or 80 GSM, boxed in fives. Heavier paper is more opaque, so double-sided copies show through less; damp paper curls and jams.

Offset paper

Uncoated woodfree paper for offset printing of books, notebooks, forms and leaflets, in sheets or reels, commonly 60 to 120 GSM. Give sheet size, grain direction, brightness and opacity; for books, the grain should run parallel to the spine.

Kraft paper

Brown paper from virgin or recycled fibre for carton liners, fluting, sacks and wrapping, in reels by the tonne. It is traded by GSM and burst factor (BF), so compare prices at the same GSM and BF.

Duplex board

Coated board with a white printing side and a grey or white back, commonly 230 to 450 GSM, for folding cartons and pharmaceutical packs. Grey back usually costs less; white back suits packs seen from both sides. Give GSM, caliper and stiffness.

Newsprint

Light paper made mainly from mechanical or recycled fibre, usually around 45 GSM, in reels for web presses and as packing sheets. It yellows in light and tears easily, so it suits short-life print.

Tissue paper

Soft, light paper for toilet rolls, facial tissue, napkins and hand towels, as jumbo parent reels for converters or finished packs. Specify ply, GSM per ply and sheet count; compare packs by sheets and plies, not pack count.

What to tell a paper supplier in Bangladesh

Grade and use: Copy, offset, kraft, duplex, newsprint or tissue, and the job: copier, offset press, carton liner, sack or wrapping. Grades with the same name differ, so send a sample.
GSM and tolerance: Grammage in GSM and the tolerance you accept, plus caliper in microns, since papers of equal GSM differ in thickness and stiffness. Lower GSM than ordered is less fibre for your money.
Size and format: Sheets in mm with grain direction, or reels with width, diameter and core. For A4, confirm 500 sheets per ream and reams per box.
Optical properties: Brightness to ISO 2470, and opacity for printing on both sides. Ask for the figures on the certificate, not a name such as high white.
Strength for packaging: Bursting strength or burst factor, tensile strength and ring crush for kraft and liners, stiffness for board, and Cobb value where the paper meets moisture.
Moisture and packing: Moisture content on the certificate, moisture-resistant ream wrap, and reels wrapped and stood on end. Monsoon air makes open paper curl and cockle.
Fibre, certification and volume: Virgin or recycled fibre, FSC certification if your customer requires it, and tonnes or reams per month with the call-off pattern, so a price period and deliveries from one batch can be agreed.

Paper tests and certificates to ask for

ISO 216: Defines A sizes: A4 is 210 × 297 mm and A3 is 297 × 420 mm. Measure a few sheets from each lot; off-size sheets jam printers.
ISO 536: Grammage, the mass per square metre in GSM. The mill certificate should report it per batch, and you can spot-check it with a scale.
ISO 2470: ISO brightness. Ask for the measured value on the certificate, so offers from different mills compare on one scale.
ISO 2758 and ISO 535: ISO 2758 is bursting strength of paper, the basis of burst factor for kraft; board is tested to ISO 2759. ISO 535 is the Cobb water absorption test, which matters for sacks and liners.
FSC certification: Chain of custody certification showing the fibre comes from certified or controlled sources. Check the certificate is valid, covers the product, and the invoice carries the claim.

What moves the price of paper

Pulp and waste paper prices, which follow world markets, and the exchange rate for imported grades and for mills buying imported pulp.
Fibre and grade: virgin pulp costs more than recycled, and higher brightness, coating, strength and tighter tolerances raise the price per tonne.
Origin: local mill or imported, with freight and duties on imports.
Quantity and format: full truckloads and monthly volumes cost less per tonne than small lots; cut sizes, ream wrapping and pallets cost more than plain reels.
Payment terms: credit days are priced in, so compare quotes on the same terms.

Lead times and delivery

Common A4, offset grades and newsprint are usually in stock in Dhaka and deliver within two to five days. Specific GSMs, sizes, kraft and board from a local mill typically take one to three weeks; imported grades typically take five to ten weeks with shipping and clearance. Mills often set minimum quantities for special GSMs or shades. Roptan confirms dates and minimums in the quote.

Paper travels in covered trucks, wrapped, on pallets or with reels stood on end, to your office, press or plant in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj or Chattogram. Deliveries by the tonne should come with a weighbridge slip, and by the ream with a box count. Documents: VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3), delivery challan and the mill test certificate for each batch.

Questions buyers ask

How can I check that A4 paper is really 80 GSM?

Weigh a ream without its wrapper: 500 sheets of 80 GSM A4 weigh about 2.5 kg, 75 GSM about 2.3 kg and 70 GSM about 2.2 kg, so a clearly lighter ream means lower GSM than you paid for. On a lab balance, cut a 10 × 10 cm square and multiply its weight in grams by 100.

Can you supply bulk packaging paper by the tonne?

Yes. Kraft, liner, fluting and duplex board come in reels or sheets by the tonne. Give GSM, burst factor, reel width, core size and monthly tonnage. We get a reel sample tested before the first bulk delivery and hold later deliveries to that result.

Why does paper jam and curl in the monsoon?

Paper takes up moisture from humid air and expands unevenly, so it curls and cockles, and kraft loses strength. Keep reams wrapped, on pallets and away from walls, use older stock first, and do not move paper straight from a cold, air-conditioned store into humid air, where it gathers condensation.

Can I fix a price for monthly paper supply?

Often, for a set period. Paper prices follow pulp costs and the exchange rate, so sellers hold a price only for a limited time. Tell us your monthly quantity; we agree a price period, call-off dates and what happens if prices move, with one batch kept where shade must match.

Do you source waste paper for recycling mills?

Yes, on request. Tell us the grade, such as old corrugated cartons, white office waste or old newspapers, the moisture and contamination limits, bale size and monthly tonnage. Waste paper is sold by weight, so agree moisture and check it before the load is accepted.

How soon will I hear back about paper?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
