Buying bicycles in Bangladesh

Bangladesh builds mountain, city, trekking and kids' bikes, and some plants e-bikes, for export, mostly to the buyer's own specification and brand; plants weld and paint frames and assemble bikes, with many components imported. Importers buy complete bikes in cartons, frames and forks for their own assembly, and parts. At home, dealers in Dhaka, Chattogram and other cities buy kids' and city bikes.

Mountain bikes

Aluminium or steel frames on 27.5 or 29 inch wheels, or 26 inch at entry level, with suspension forks, disc brakes and wide-range gearing. Hardtails have front suspension only and cost less than full suspension.

City and trekking bikes

Commuter and touring bikes on 700C (622 mm) wheels with mudguards, chain guard, racks and lights, often with hub gears or a step-through frame. Specify rack load, frame sizes, and lighting and reflectors to your market's road rules.

Kids' bikes

Children's bikes on 12 to 24 inch wheels, with stabilisers, a chain guard and a coaster brake on the small sizes. Check brake lever reach, small parts and paint, and the standard that applies by saddle height.

E-bikes

Pedal-assist bikes with hub or mid-drive motors and lithium batteries. Motor, battery and controller set most of the price, so specify each by type and origin.

Frames and forks

Frames in 6061 aluminium, hi-tensile or chromoly steel, painted or raw, with rigid or suspension forks, for assemblers elsewhere. Specify the geometry drawing, tube specification, head tube and bottom bracket type, and fatigue tests to ISO 4210-6.

Bicycle parts

Wheels, rims, spokes, tyres and tubes, saddles, handlebars, stems, racks and mudguards for assemblers and the aftermarket. Buy against drawings and ISO 5775 tyre and rim sizes, with the ISO 4210 clauses each part must pass.

What to send a bicycle manufacturer in Bangladesh

Market, standard and sample tests
Name the market and its standard, such as ISO 4210, ISO 8098, EN 15194 or 16 CFR 1512, and which tests pre-production samples must pass at which lab.
Frame and sizes
Send a geometry drawing or reference bike, frame sizes, material and tube specification, wheel size by ISO 5775 bead seat diameter, and the saddle height range.
Component list
List every part, brakes, drivetrain, fork, wheels, tyres, saddle and pedals, with grade or origin. Substitutions cause most disputes, so require written approval for any change.
Corrosion
Humid, salty air at sea and in storage rusts chains, spokes and fasteners. Specify coating thickness and a neutral salt spray test to ISO 9227.
E-bike electrics
State motor type and rated power, battery voltage and Wh, cell origin, speed cut-off and charger plug, with the battery pack's test reports.
Finish and branding
Frame colours, decals, logo placement and manuals in your languages. Approve colour on a painted sample; custom colours often carry a minimum per colour.
Carton, origin and terms
Assembly level, carton size and cartons per 40-foot high cube, where the frame and main parts come from, the Incoterm and the frame and parts warranty.

ISO 4210
Safety requirements and test methods for city and trekking, young adult, mountain and racing bicycles: frame and fork fatigue, braking, steering, wheels, pedals and saddles. Ask for the lab report on the exact model.
ISO 8098
Safety requirements and tests for bicycles for young children, including chain guards and brakes.
EN 15194 and EN 50604-1
Electrically power assisted cycles in the EU, and the safety of their lithium batteries.
US CPSC 16 CFR 1512
Mandatory US bicycle requirements, including reflectors, brakes and structure. Children's bikes also need CPSIA lead tests and a Children's Product Certificate.
REACH chemical limits
EU limits on PAHs in rubber and plastic parts that touch the skin, such as grips and saddles. Ask for test reports on them.

What moves the price and landed cost of a bicycle

  • Component level: brakes, drivetrain and suspension fork set most of the bill; branded Japanese or Taiwanese drivetrains and hydraulic brakes cost far more than generic parts.
  • Frame material: 6061 aluminium and chromoly cost more than hi-tensile steel; shaped or butted tubes add more.
  • E-bike system: motor type, battery capacity in Wh and cell origin.
  • Finish and order mix: paint layers, decals and custom colours, and models and colours per container.
  • Testing: ISO 4210 lab tests per model and pre-shipment inspection.
  • Carton size: cartons per container set freight per bike.

Lead times and delivery

Samples of an existing model usually take 4 to 8 weeks, and a new frame design longer. Bulk typically runs 60 to 120 days from sample approval, since imported drivetrains, brakes, motors and batteries are booked in advance and often set the date. Custom colours and any failed test add time. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum order in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver boxed or assembled bikes to dealers, schools, fleets and offices in Dhaka, Chattogram, Gazipur and elsewhere, counted by model, size and colour. You receive the owner's manual, a warranty card with the frame number, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Spare parts for local orders are agreed in the quote.

Buying bicycles for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram, usually by the full 40-foot high cube container mixed across a few models. An AQL inspection to ISO 2859-1 before loading checks frame numbers against the packing list, assembly, bolt torque, brakes, wheel true, paint, labels and cartons. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, a REX statement on origin for EU GSP or origin papers for the UK DCTS, and the test reports for your standard.

Questions buyers ask

Which standard applies to a kids' bike?

It depends on saddle height. Bikes with a maximum saddle height of 435 to 635 mm fall under ISO 8098; above that, ISO 4210 applies; at 435 mm or below the bike is usually treated as a toy under toy safety rules such as EN 71 or ISO 8124.

Can an e-bike built in Bangladesh meet EU rules?

Yes, if it is designed for them. An EU pedal-assist bike under EN 15194 has up to 250 W rated power and stops assisting at 25 km/h; faster or more powerful bikes need vehicle type approval instead. Ask for the EN 15194 report, battery tests to EN 50604-1 and UN 38.3, and the CE declaration.

What does 85 percent assembled mean?

It is the usual export state. Most of the bike, including rear wheel, gears and brakes, is assembled and adjusted at the plant; the handlebar is turned sideways and the front wheel, pedals and saddle are packed in the carton for the retailer to fit. Smaller cartons mean more bikes per container.

How do I avoid rust on bikes shipped by sea?

Specify coatings by test, not description: salt spray hours to ISO 9227 for paint and plated parts, stainless or coated spokes and fasteners, and chains oiled at packing. Add desiccant in cartons for long voyages and load containers dry.

Does origin change the duty I pay?

Often, yes. Many markets give lower duty to bikes that meet their origin rules, which look at where the frame and main parts are made; for EU GSP the seller makes a REX statement on origin. Ask how each model qualifies and keep the records: bikes found not to qualify can face full duty, or anti-dumping duty in some markets.

How soon will I hear back about bicycles?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
