Manual hospital beds

Beds adjusted by hand cranks at the foot: a 2-function bed moves the backrest and knee section, a 3-function bed adds height. They need no power and little maintenance, so they suit general wards and clinics.

Electric hospital beds

Beds moved by electric actuators from a handset and nurse panel, usually with height, backrest, knee and tilt. Ask for battery backup for power cuts, a lockable handset, CPR release and IEC 60601-2-52 compliance.

ICU beds

Electric beds for intensive care with Trendelenburg and reverse tilt, a quick CPR release, an X-ray translucent backrest, split side rails and often a built-in scale and bed exit alarm. Specify only the functions your ICU protocols need.

Patient trolleys

What to tell a hospital bed supplier in Bangladesh

Ward and functions: State the ward: ICU, acute, general, maternity, paediatric or home care, and the functions, manual or electric. Each function adds a crank or motor, so list only those your nurses will use.
Safe working load and size: Give the safe working load in kg, which covers patient, mattress and accessories together, the mattress platform size, and the overall length and width with side rails fitted.
Lifts and doors: Measure lift car depth, door widths and corridors. An assembled ICU bed with rails and accessories may not fit a small lift; beds can arrive knocked down for assembly on each floor.
Frame and finish: Epoxy powder-coated mild steel or stainless steel 304. In humid wards cleaned daily with chlorine, ask for the coating thickness or a salt spray test report.
Power and backup: For electric beds, state single phase 220 to 230 V at 50 Hz, and ask for a battery that can lower and flatten the bed during load shedding.
Side rails, mattress and castors: Ask for side rails that meet the IEC 60601-2-52 gap limits with the mattress you will use; a narrower mattress opens gaps that can trap a patient. Specify castor diameter, central locking and a steering castor.

Standards and papers for hospital beds

IEC 60601-2-52: The particular safety standard for medical beds: side rail gaps that can trap a patient, stability, safe working load marking and electrical safety. Ask for a test report for the exact model.
IEC 60601-1: General safety of medical electrical equipment, applied to electric and ICU beds, their actuators, control boxes and handsets.
ISO 13485: Quality management for device makers. Ask for the current certificate, especially for imported electric and ICU beds.
EN 597-1 and EN 597-2: Ignition resistance of mattresses to a smouldering cigarette and a match flame equivalent. Ask for results for the mattress with its cover.
DGDA registration and warranty certificate: Where required, the Directorate General of Drug Administration registration or its status, and a warranty certificate listing serial numbers, the years covered for frame, motors and parts, and who carries out service.

Frame material: stainless steel costs more than epoxy-coated mild steel but resists rust in wet areas.
Mattress and accessories: pressure relief mattresses, rails, IV pole and locker add a large share when priced separately.
Origin and quantity: locally made beds usually cost less, imported beds move with the exchange rate, and ward lots earn better terms.

Lead times and delivery

Manual beds, trolleys and couches made or stocked locally usually deliver within one to four weeks for a ward lot. Electric and ICU beds imported to order typically take six to twelve weeks, longer for a full hospital fit-out or custom colours. Delivery can be phased by floor as rooms are finished. Should I buy manual or electric hospital beds?

Manual beds cost less, need no power and have fewer parts to fail, so they suit general wards, clinics and sites with frequent load shedding. Electric beds let patients adjust themselves and save nurses' backs, which matters in ICUs, HDUs and private cabins. Many hospitals buy both.

What makes an ICU bed different from a ward bed?

Will the bed fit in our hospital lift?
