Buying cranes and hoists in Bangladesh

Textile and steel mills, power plants, shipyards, warehouses and fabrication shops in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chattogram (Chittagong) buy cranes to move loads that forklifts cannot. EOT cranes run on runways inside a shed, gantry cranes work in open yards, jib cranes serve one workstation and hoists lift on a beam. Contractors buy or hire mobile and crawler cranes for building and bridge sites.

A crane supplier in Bangladesh may quote a capacity and a price; what you need is a crane rated for your load, duty and building. Tell us what you lift, how often and where. We turn it into one specification, source from verified sellers, check the documents and test plan, and deliver. The seller erects, load tests and commissions the crane. You deal with Roptan only.

Cranes and hoists we source

Overhead EOT cranes

An electric overhead travelling crane runs on rails carried by the building columns and covers the whole bay. Single-girder cranes suit lighter loads; double-girder cranes carry heavier loads over wider spans. The building must be checked to carry the runway.

Gantry cranes

A gantry, or goliath, crane stands on rigid legs running on ground-level rails, so it needs no building runway. It suits open stockyards, precast and steel yards and loading bays. Outdoors, ask for weather protection and a stated wind limit.

Jib cranes

A jib crane carries a hoist on an arm that swings around a pillar or wall bracket. It serves one machine or loading point, so operators stop waiting for the main crane. State arm length, slewing angle and what it mounts on.

Electric chain hoists

An electric chain hoist lifts on a load chain and hangs from a hook, a trolley or a jib arm. It suits lighter loads, workshops and assembly lines. State capacity, lift height, the beam it runs on and the speeds you need.

Wire rope hoists

A wire rope hoist winds steel rope on a drum and is the usual hoist on EOT and gantry cranes for heavier loads and higher lifts. Ask for the rope specification, limit switches and overload protection.

Mobile and crawler cranes

Mobile cranes on wheels move between sites by road; crawler cranes on tracks work on soft ground. Bought new or used, or hired with an operator. For a used crane, the quote should state year, hours, condition and the last examination record.

What to tell a crane supplier in Bangladesh

Load and safe working load
State the heaviest load including slings, and the safe working load to be marked on the crane. The Labour Act bars loading a crane beyond it.
Span, lift height and runway length
Give the distance between rail centres, the hook height and the travel length. Send the shed drawing with column positions and roof height.
Duty: how often and how heavy
Say lifts per hour, hours per day and how many lifts are near full load. Sellers express this as a CMAA class or an ISO 4301 group: international practice, not Bangladesh law.
The building or foundation
An EOT runway loads the columns, a gantry needs rails on a foundation and a jib needs a footing or strong wall. Your structural engineer should confirm it.
Power supply
Industrial cranes usually run on three phase 50 Hz. Say where the supply point is, conductor bars or festoon cable, and whether a generator backs the crane.
Controls and speeds
Pendant, radio remote or cabin; single or two speeds, or inverter drives for smooth starts with delicate loads.
Outdoor, coastal and wind
Outdoor and coastal cranes need weather protection, a paint system for salt air, a stated working wind limit and a rule for securing the crane when a cyclone warning is issued.

Law, standards and test papers for cranes

Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, section 68
Cranes and lifting machinery, including ropes and chains, must be thoroughly examined by a competent person at least once every 12 months, with a register kept, and the safe working load plainly marked.
Labour Act section 69, hoists and lifts
Hoists and lifts have their own section, with examination at least every six months. Confirm which schedule applies to a stand-alone hoist.
Inspector's powers, section 76
An inspector may order drawings, specifications and strength tests for machinery that may be dangerous. Keep the design file and test reports on site.
Design standard and duty class
International practice uses the ASME B30 series, ISO 4301 and the CMAA classes A to F. Bangladesh law names none of them, so ask which one the crane is built and tested to.
Load test certificate
A load test at 125 percent of rated load is widely used international practice, not a Bangladesh legal figure. The quote should state the test load, method and witness.

What moves the price of a crane

  • Capacity and span: a heavier load or wider span needs a deeper girder and a larger hoist.
  • Girder and hoist: a double-girder crane with a wire rope hoist costs more than a single-girder chain hoist crane.
  • Duty class: frequent, heavy lifting needs larger motors, gearboxes and brakes.
  • Controls: radio remote and inverter speed control add cost and reduce wear.
  • Runway, rails and power: runway beams, conductor bars and erection are often left out of a crane price.
  • Origin and condition: European, Japanese, Chinese or Indian components, and new or used, change price and spares access.

Lead times and delivery

Delivery time depends on whether the crane or hoist is in stock, made in Bangladesh to order or imported, and imports add shipping and customs clearance at Chattogram. EOT and gantry cranes are built once span, capacity and runway are fixed, and erection waits on the runway and power being ready. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum for each order in the quote.

We deliver across Bangladesh, from Gazipur and Savar to Chattogram and Khulna. The seller erects the runway and crane, sets limit switches and brakes, runs the load test, commissions the crane and trains your operators. You receive the test certificate, the safe working load marked on the crane, the operating manual, the spare parts list, the warranty and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Trade licence and import papersA current trade licence in the quoted name, and the bill of entry for an imported crane or hoist.
  • Origin and authorisationMaker and country of origin stated plainly, authorisation where the seller represents a maker, and age and condition if used.
  • Spare parts and serviceWho holds brakes, contactors, ropes and chains in Bangladesh, and how fast a technician reaches your site.
  • Warranty and test plan in writingWarranty period, cover and exclusions, plus the load test, its witness and the handover documents, named in the quote.

Questions buyers ask

How often must a crane be examined in Bangladesh?

Section 68 of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006 requires cranes and lifting machinery to be thoroughly examined by a competent person at least once every 12 months, with a register kept. Hoists and lifts are covered by section 69, at least every six months. Ask the inspector which applies to a stand-alone hoist.

Single girder or double girder: which do I need?

It depends on load, span and hook height. Single-girder cranes are lighter, cost less and suit lighter loads in most workshops. Double-girder cranes carry heavier loads over wider spans with more hook height under the same roof. Send the load, span and roof height and the seller proposes what fits.

Can my existing shed carry an overhead crane?

Often, but check first. An EOT crane puts wheel loads and braking forces on the columns and runway beams. Send the shed drawings and column sizes; a structural engineer confirms the building or designs new runway columns before you order.

What does the duty class of a crane mean?

It describes how hard the crane works: how often it lifts and how close to full load. The CMAA classes A to F and the ISO 4301 groups grade it; Bangladesh law does not set one. A crane rated below your duty wears early, and one far above it costs more than needed.

Can you supply a mobile crane with an operator?

Ask us for hire with an operator or a crane to buy. Check the operator's licence and experience, a lift plan for heavy lifts and the crane's last examination record. Reports on the 2022 Uttara BRT girder fall in Dhaka described an untrained helper driving the crane and a lift heavier than its capacity.

How soon will I hear back about cranes and hoists?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the model or specification, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
