Buying zippers in Bangladesh
A zip, or slide fastener, joins two tapes of teeth or coil with a slider. Coil zips, a polyester coil sewn to the tape, now make up most zip sales worldwide; metal teeth are the classic jeans zip, and moulded plastic suits luggage, backpacks and sporting goods. Garment exporters, bag makers and local brands in Bangladesh buy zips against each order.
A zip costs little, but a failed one can leave a garment unusable. A zipper supplier in Bangladesh should prove the slider, stops and colour before bulk, so Roptan sources from verified makers or your nominated source, gets the sample signed on your trim card and checks the zips on arrival.
What to tell a zipper supplier in Bangladesh
- Type and gauge
- Coil, metal, moulded or invisible, and the gauge, #3, #5, #7, #8 or #10, which rises with the width of the closed teeth in millimetres.
- Style and length
- Closed bottom, double closed bottom, separating, or continuous chain by the yard, and the finished length with a tolerance.
- Tape
- Tape width, and colour against the approved swatch or lab dip. Ask early whether the maker dyes tape to order.
- Slider and puller
- An auto-lock or semi-auto-lock slider holds its position and resists forces that would open the zip; give the puller shape, finish and any logo.
- Care and finish
- The garment's wash, ironing and dry-clean care, and the metal finish. The zip should keep its size and colour after ironing and dry-cleaning.
Tests and standards for zips
- EN 16732:2025
- The European zip specification: performance levels and tests for puller attachment, stops, open-end box, lateral extension, slider lock, slider retention and torque. Ask which edition and level the report cites.
- ASTM D2061 and D2062
- Strength tests for zips and the operability test. Ask which ASTM methods the buyer's protocol cites, and for which end use.
- ASTM D2057, D2058 and D2059
- Colour fastness of zips to laundering, durability of finish to dry-cleaning, and resistance to salt spray.
- EN 1811:2023 and EN 12472:2020
- Nickel release from metal teeth, sliders and pullers in prolonged skin contact, against the REACH nickel limit, after wear and corrosion conditioning for coated parts.
Lead times and delivery
Lead time depends on the zip, the maker and the approvals, so Roptan plans each order back from your in-house date. Card shades in a common gauge are quicker to plan. Tape dyed to match, a new puller, plated or painted finishes, resubmitted samples and failed tests add time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Zips reach your factory store bundled by style, colour and length, with the trim card item code on each bundle. Roptan sends the packing list, test reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). For export orders, zips are commonly paid by back-to-back LC opened by the exporter's bank against the garment order.
Buying zippers for export
Zips fall under HS heading 9607, slide fasteners and parts: 9607.11 for zips with base-metal teeth, 9607.19 for other zips and 9607.20 for parts such as sliders. Roptan quotes buyers abroad FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), or air from Dhaka for small lots, with the test reports the market asks for.
Questions buyers ask
What zip gauge do I need?
Match the gauge to the fabric weight and the load on the closure. Light garments use the small gauges; heavy coats, bags and jeans use the larger ones, since the number rises with tooth width. Approve a sample sewn on your own fabric before bulk.
Can zips be dyed to match our fabric?
Usually, with limits. Tape can be matched to the swatch, moulded teeth come in any plastic colour, and metal can be plated or painted. Some makers sell only shades from their colour card and do not dye to order, so send the swatch or lab dip early.
Will metal zips pass the metal detector?
Buyers commonly require garments to pass a metal detector before packing, and some buyer codes ask for non-ferrous zip hardware, more strictly for children's wear. Confirm the rule per buyer and per order before the zips are booked, so the right hardware is made.
Do zips on US children's wear need a lead test?
On the metal parts, yes. US rules treat polyester and other manufactured-fibre textiles as not exceeding the lead limits for children's products, but brass and zinc-alloy hardware is not on that list, so pullers, sliders and metal teeth need a lead test.
How soon will I hear back about garment accessories?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
