Buying hang tags in Bangladesh

A hang tag is a card, board, plastic or fabric tag fixed to a garment with a plastic fastener, cord or safety pin. It carries brand, style, size, colour, price, barcode and origin, sometimes care text or claims such as pre-washed. Garment exporters in Bangladesh buy tags from the brand's artwork for each order; local brands buy them for their shops.

Tag data changes with every style, colour, size and market, so the check covers the data as much as the print. Barcode, board and safety rules for tags

ISO/IEC 15416:2025: Grades the print quality of linear barcodes such as EAN and UPC. The 2000 and 2016 editions are withdrawn, so a report should cite 2025 or no year.
EAN-13 and UPC-A under GS1: EAN-13 has 13 digits and extends the 12-digit UPC-A, the usual code in US and Canadian retail. The number is the brand's, under GS1, and its prefix does not show where a product is made.
FSC chain of custody: FSC chain-of-custody certification is what allows the FSC label on finished products. Ask the printer for its certificate code and check it in the FSC database before the tags are printed.
CPSIA lead rule, 16 CFR 1500.91: Paper, paperboard and CMYK process inks are determined not to exceed US lead limits for children's products; spot colours and after-treatments such as screen prints are not, so buyers may ask for a lead test.

What moves the price of a hang tag

Size and board weight: a larger or heavier tag uses more board per piece.
Print: extra colours, spot colours and special finishes each add a print step.
Versions: every style, colour or price change is a separate file and count.
Shape: a die-cut shape needs its own cutting die.
Compliance: FSC certified printing and lead tests on spot colours add cost.

Lead times and delivery

Questions buyers ask

Should the barcode be EAN-13 or UPC-A?

The one the retailer scans. UPC-A is the usual code in US and Canadian retail, and EAN-13 is used widely elsewhere; an EAN-13 starting with 0 is a UPC-A with a zero added. The number comes from the brand's GS1 allocation, so it is printed from the buyer's file.

Can a hang tag carry the care and fibre information?

It can repeat it, and when the sewn-in label is hidden by packaging the care information usually goes on the pack or a hang tag. A tag does not replace the label: in the US, a garment with a neck must show its country of origin on a label inside the neck.

Why do children's wear factories want plastic tag fasteners?

Children's wear and factories with sharp-metal control restrict pins and staples, so tags go on with plastic barbs or lock loops. A lock loop cannot be released once closed, so the tag stays on until it is cut off.
