Buying elastic and tapes in Bangladesh
Elastic is a narrow fabric with a stretch core of rubber or spandex, covered with polyester, cotton, nylon or a mix. It gathers waistbands, cuffs, leg openings and hems, while twill tape, drawcords and reflective tape reinforce, close or mark the garment. Garment exporters and local brands in Bangladesh buy them by the roll against each order.
Elastic that looks right on the roll can fail in the garment, shrinking, narrowing or losing recovery after washing or needle damage. An elastic and tape supplier in Bangladesh should prove it on a washed sample, so Roptan sources from verified makers, has samples washed and measured, and checks colour lot by lot.
What to tell an elastic and tape supplier in Bangladesh
- Construction and width
- Braided, knitted, woven or clear, and the width in mm with a tolerance; construction decides whether the width holds under stretch.
- Core and cover
- Rubber, spandex or polyurethane core, and a polyester, cotton or nylon cover chosen for the garment's wash and dry care.
- Stretch and recovery
- How far it extends and how fully it returns, with the test method and load. Good elastic usually stretches to twice its length and returns without visible wear.
- Placement
- In a casing, stitched on or exposed, since that decides preshrinking and the needle used.
- Colour and rolls
- Colour against the approved fabric or swatch, roll length, and a label on each roll with item code, width, colour and lot.
Tests and safety rules for elastic and cords
- ISO 20932-3:2018
- Elasticity of narrow fabrics such as elastic tape, amended in 2025. Ask which method and which load or elongation the stretch figures refer to.
- ASTM D4964
- Tension and elongation of elastic fabrics on a constant-rate-of-extension tester, the ASTM route to the same figures.
- EN 14682
- The European specification for cords and drawstrings on children's clothing. Ask for the report on the finished garment, not the cord alone.
- ASTM F1816
- The US safety specification for drawstrings on children's upper outerwear, current edition 2018, reapproved 2024; the CPSC rule at 16 CFR 1120.3 refers to it.
Lead times and delivery
Elastic must be in the factory by the in-house date, so Roptan plans each order back from that date. Stock widths and colours are quicker; dyeing to match, a new width or construction and a failed wash or stretch test add time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Rolls reach your factory store labelled by item code, width, colour and lot, with the packing list, the wash and stretch results on the approved sample and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). For export orders, elastic is commonly paid by back-to-back LC against the garment order.
Buying elastic and tapes for export
Woven elastic with 5% or more elastomeric yarn or rubber thread falls under HS 5806.20, knitted elastic under 6002, braids under 5808 and textile-covered rubber thread and cord under 5604. Construction and elastomer content decide the line, so the exporter's broker confirms it. Roptan quotes buyers abroad FOB Chattogram (Chittagong).
Questions buyers ask
Which elastic should I use in a waistband?
It depends on the fabric and how the elastic is fixed. Woven non-roll elastic stays flat in waistbands on heavier fabric; knitted elastic suits light garments and can be stitched through; braided elastic works in a casing but loses recovery if pierced. Approve a washed sample in the garment.
Why does elastic lose its stretch after washing?
Common causes are heat, the cover fibre and needle damage. Nylon-covered elastic does not tolerate high dryer heat and cotton-covered elastic tends to shrink a little, while polyester with rubber usually holds up well to repeated washing. Braided elastic pierced by a needle loses recovery.
Should elastic be preshrunk?
If it sits loose in a casing, yes: relax or preshrink it before it is measured and cut, or the waist can tighten after the first wash. Elastic stitched directly to the fabric needs no preshrinking. State which applies, so the sample is tested the same way.
Are drawcords allowed on children's clothing?
With limits. EN 14682 sets requirements for cords and drawstrings on children's clothing in Europe. In the US, the CPSC treats children's upper outerwear in sizes 2T to 16 with drawstrings that do not meet ASTM F1816 as a substantial product hazard. Give the age range and market on the order.
How soon will I hear back about garment accessories?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
