Buying sugar and salt in Bangladesh

Food and drink makers, bakeries, pharmaceutical plants, hotels and caterers buy sugar by the tonne; tanneries, dye houses and chemical plants buy industrial salt. Bangladesh uses about 2.0 to 2.2 million tonnes of sugar a year and imports almost all of it as raw or refined sugar; private refiners turn most of the raw sugar into refined sugar here. Edible salt comes from local mills, with crude salt harvested on the coast of Cox's Bazar and Chattogram (Chittagong).

A sugar and salt supplier in Bangladesh can quote a low rate per tonne and deliver a lot with no BSTI mark or test data behind it. Tell us the product, grade, pack and delivery point. We source from verified sellers, check the licences and a lab report for each lot, and deliver to your plant, store or kitchen. You deal with Roptan only.

Sugar and salt we source

Refined sugar

White crystal sugar for bakeries, confectionery, drinks, dairy and pharmaceutical use, in bulk bags or retail packs. The BSTI standard is BDS 138:2006. State the colour grade, usually in ICUMSA units, and the pack.

Brown sugar

Sugar with some molasses left in or added back, for a darker colour and stronger taste in bakery, sauces and drinks. Grades differ in colour and moisture, so ask for a sample and the certificate of analysis.

Icing sugar

Refined sugar milled to a fine powder for icing, coatings and fillings. Some grades carry a little starch to stop caking. State whether you need it, and ask for moisture-proof packing, since the powder takes up damp.

Liquid glucose

A clear, thick syrup made from starch, used in sweets, bakery, ice cream and pharmaceutical syrups to control crystallisation and add body. State the grade, viscosity and pack, and ask for the certificate of analysis with each lot.

Edible salt

Salt for food must be iodised by law in Bangladesh, and anyone who produces, processes or imports salt must be registered. Packaged edible salt is usually certified against BDS 1236:2020. Ask for the iodine content in ppm on a lab report for your lot.

Industrial salt

Crude or washed salt for textile dyeing, leather curing, water softeners and chemical plants. Buy it on a stated sodium chloride content, moisture and insoluble matter, confirmed by a lab report.

What to tell a sugar and salt supplier in Bangladesh

Colour grade for sugar
Sugar colour is usually stated in ICUMSA units: a lower number means less colour, and the trade calls ICUMSA 45 white refined sugar. Ask for the value with polarisation and moisture.
Iodine content for edible salt
Ask for iodine in ppm on a lab report for each lot. Reports in 2025 described packaged salt sold as iodised with no iodine in it.
Purity for industrial salt
Sodium chloride content, moisture and insoluble matter on a lab report, and whether you need crushed, washed or refined salt.
Quantity and pack
Tonnes or cartons, bag size or retail pack, drums for glucose, and your own label or plain packing.
Labels and certification marks
Packs of refined sugar and iodised salt carry the BSTI CM mark, and imported packs usually show the maker and importer names and addresses. Ask for halal certification from the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh where needed.
End use and food safety system
Food, drink, medicine or industry. Food and pharmaceutical buyers usually ask for a plant with HACCP, ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000.
Delivery point and schedule
Factory, warehouse or kitchen; one drop or a monthly call-off. Plan ahead of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Adha, when demand and supply move.

BSTI standards, licences and food safety papers

BDS 138:2006, refined sugar
The BSTI standard for refined sugar, with its 2008 amendment; imported refined sugar must meet it too. Ask for a test report against the current edition.
BSTI CM licence
Refined sugar and iodised salt are on BSTI's mandatory certification mark scheme, so the maker, packer or importer needs a CM licence and the pack carries the mark. Ask for the licence number.
BDS 1236:2020, iodised salt
The trade names this BSTI standard for iodised edible salt. Confirm the current edition with the seller and ask for the iodine test on your lot against it.
Salt registration under the iodised salt law
A law passed by parliament in June 2021 makes iodisation of edible salt mandatory and requires anyone who produces, processes or imports salt to register. Mills usually register with BSCIC.
Food safety: BFSA, HACCP, ISO 22000
Food sold in Bangladesh falls under the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority and the Food Safety Act 2013. For food and pharmaceutical use, ask for the plant's current HACCP, ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000 certificate.

What moves the price of sugar and salt

  • World sugar prices and the taka exchange rate, since Bangladesh imports almost all of its sugar.
  • Import duty on sugar, which the government changes from time to time and often reviews before Ramadan.
  • The salt harvest: a short season on the coast, as in 2025-26, can tighten supply for months.
  • Grade and processing: lower colour sugar, vacuum-evaporated salt and fine icing sugar cost more to make.
  • Pack: retail packs and printed labels cost more per tonne than bulk bags, drums or tankers.
  • Delivery: distance from refineries and salt mills, truck size and the number of drops.

Lead times and delivery

We give no standard lead time: availability depends on stock at refineries and mills and on the calendar. Salt is harvested on the coast in the dry season; the 2025-26 season ran from November to May and fell short of its target, per BSCIC. Sugar demand rises before Ramadan, and salt goes to preserve hides before Eid-ul-Adha. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum quantity for each order in the quote.

We deliver across Bangladesh, to factories in Gazipur, Narayanganj and Savar, to kitchens and stores in Dhaka, and to plants around Chattogram. Each lot comes with its lot number on the bags or drums, the lab report or certificate of analysis, a delivery note and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Bags are counted or weighed against the order on delivery, and damp or torn bags are set aside.

What we check for this order

  • BSTI CM licence and registrationThe seller's BSTI CM licence for refined sugar or iodised salt, and the salt mill's registration, current and in the quoted name.
  • A lab report for each lotIodine in ppm for edible salt; colour, polarisation and moisture for sugar; purity for industrial salt, from an accredited lab.
  • Food safety systemHACCP, ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000 for the plant that packs a food or pharmaceutical order, current on the quote date.
  • Weight and condition on deliveryA weighbridge record or bag count against the order, lot numbers that match the report, and dry, sealed bags.

Questions buyers ask

Can I import edible salt instead of buying it locally?

Plan on local supply. Edible salt in Bangladesh is a locally produced, registered product: by law it must be iodised, and anyone who produces, processes or imports salt must register. Buy from a registered mill with a BSTI CM licence and ask for the iodine test on your lot.

What is ICUMSA 45 sugar?

ICUMSA is the unit the trade uses for sugar colour: the lower the number, the less colour, and ICUMSA 45 is the trade's grade for white refined sugar. It is a colour value, not a full specification, so ask for it on the certificate of analysis with polarisation and moisture.

How do I know packaged salt is really iodised?

Ask for a lab report giving the iodine content in ppm for the lot you buy, not a general certificate. Reports in 2025 described packaged salt sold as iodised with no iodine in it. Buy from a registered mill with a BSTI CM licence, and test again if the salt goes into your own packs.

Why does the price of sugar change so often?

Bangladesh imports almost all of its sugar, so world prices, the exchange rate and import duty all pass through. The duty changes from time to time and is often reviewed before Ramadan. We quote on the day with the basis stated, and Roptan confirms in the quote how long the price holds.

Can you supply sugar for pharmaceutical use?

Yes. We source refined sugar and liquid glucose for syrups and tablets from sellers who can show a BSTI CM licence, a test report for the lot and a food safety certificate. Your quality team sets the specification; we check the certificate of analysis against it before delivery.

How soon will I hear back about sugar and salt?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
