Buying industrial salt in Bangladesh
In law, industrial salt is salt used for refining or processing, or as a raw material in a factory for anything other than food. Dye houses use it in textile dyeing, tanneries cure hides with it, and water plants regenerate softener resins with it; chemical plants use sodium chloride as a feedstock. Bangladesh exports almost none, so buyers draw on local mills.
Industrial salt is not on BSTI's mandatory certification list as far as it shows, so the lab report is the buyer's protection. An industrial salt supplier in Bangladesh should quote on tested figures, so Roptan writes them into the order, checks the mill's registration and keeps your lot apart from food-grade stock.
How to specify industrial salt
- End use
- Dyeing, hide curing, water softening or chemical feed. The use decides which impurities matter to you.
- Sodium chloride
- Industrial grades are set by the buyer, so give the minimum your process needs and the basis, dry or as received.
- Moisture and insoluble matter
- Ask for loss on drying at 110 degrees C to ISO 2483 and matter insoluble in water or acid to ISO 2479.
- Calcium, magnesium and sulphate
- These count in dyeing and water softening. A lab can test them to ISO 2482 and ISO 2480.
- Form and grain
- Crushed, washed, refined or vacuum; lump or fine. Say if your plant doses salt by machine.
- Packing
- The Act requires industrial salt to be marketed in a yellow packet. Give the bag size you can handle and ask what labelling the mill uses.
Law and standards for industrial salt
- Iodized Salt Act 2021
- Defines industrial salt by its non-food factory use, requires a yellow packet and bars selling it as edible salt or using it to make food.
- Registration under the Act
- Producing industrial salt, or using it as a factory raw material, is subject to registration under the Act, which also covers importing any kind of salt.
- BDS 14:1998 and BDS 20:2002
- BSTI's standards for common salt and for hide curing salt. Ask whether the lot has been tested against one of them.
- ISO salt test methods
- ISO 2479, 2480, 2482 and 2483 are written for sodium chloride for industrial use and are the methods the Codex salt standard names, so a lab can run them on your lot.
Lead times and delivery
There is no standard lead time for industrial salt. Crude salt is freshest after the dry-season harvest, which ran from 12 November 2025 to 25 May 2026, and tightest before the next one. Hide curing salt is in demand ahead of Eid-ul-Adha. A refined grade, a large tonnage or an imported lot takes longer. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum quantity in the quote.
Roptan delivers industrial salt to dye houses, tanneries, water plants and chemical plants across Bangladesh, in yellow packing as the Act requires. Each lot comes with its lab report, a delivery note and a Mushak 6.3 VAT invoice. Industrial lots travel covered and are kept apart from food-grade salt on the truck and in store.
Questions buyers ask
Can industrial salt be used in food?
No. The Iodized Salt Act 2021 bars selling non-iodised salt as edible salt and making food commercially with it, and it defines industrial salt by non-food factory use. If part of your plant handles food, keep the two salts in separate stores and bags.
Why is industrial salt packed in yellow bags?
The Act requires industrial salt to be marketed in a yellow packet, with the size and the details on it to be set by rules. The colour keeps it apart from edible salt. Ask the mill what labelling it uses.
What purity of salt does a dye house need?
It depends on the dye and the water. Calcium, magnesium and sulphate belong in the order beside the sodium chloride figure. Ask your dyeing team for limits, write them into the order and have each lot tested to the ISO salt methods.
Does industrial salt need a BSTI mark?
As far as BSTI's mandatory list shows, no: of the salt standards, only iodised salt is on it. BSTI does have standards for common salt and hide curing salt, but they are not on that list. The mill's registration and a lab report per lot are your protection.
How soon will I hear back about sugar and salt?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
