Buying eggs and poultry in Bangladesh

Hotels, restaurants, caterers, bakeries, food processors and farms buy eggs and poultry in bulk. Official figures from the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) put egg output at 23,380 million in FY2022-23, more than double the figure ten years before. Most chicken is still slaughtered by hand at wet markets, as a 2020 sector study found, and modern dressing plants are few, mainly around Dhaka and Chattogram.

An egg and poultry supplier in Bangladesh may sell at the day's rate with no papers. What you need is the right grade, birds from a farm with a known disease status and a plant you have checked. Tell us what you need and when. We source from verified farms, hatcheries and plants, check the papers and deliver. You deal with Roptan only.

Eggs and poultry we source

Table eggs

Eggs for kitchens, bakeries and processors, sold by the tray or carton. State chicken, duck or quail, the weight band, shell colour, the count per tray or carton and the oldest egg you accept on delivery.

Hatching eggs

Fertile eggs from breeder flocks, bought by hatcheries to incubate. Ask for the breeder flock's health record, the age of the eggs and how they were stored. Imported hatching eggs need DLS import papers and health certificates from the exporting country; ask which apply to the consignment.

Day old chicks

Chicks from the hatchery, sold by the box to broiler and layer farms. Ask for the batch vaccination record and the breeder flock, and check the boxes and travel time. Parent stock chicks are imported through a breeder farm that holds a DLS no-objection certificate.

Live broiler chicken

Broilers grown on a cycle of usually 30 to 35 days and sold live by weight, typically around 1.5 to 1.7 kg. Sonali and Deshi birds are lighter. State the weight range, count and date, and check birds and crates at loading.

Ducks and ducklings

Ducklings for layer farms and ducks for the table. Khaki Campbell and Jingding are the improved layer ducks promoted in Bangladesh. Duckling supply has been short in the north, as a 2025 report from Kurigram found, so book early and state the hatch date.

Dressed chicken

Slaughtered, cleaned and packed birds, whole or in cuts, chilled or frozen, for hotels, caterers and processors. Modern plants are few, so check the plant itself: its licence, food safety certification, halal certificate and cold chain.

What to tell an egg and poultry supplier in Bangladesh

Product and type
Chicken, duck or quail eggs; broiler, layer or parent stock chicks; broiler, Sonali or Deshi birds; ducks or ducklings; whole dressed birds or cuts.
Grade and weight
Egg weight band and shell colour, live weight range for birds, or dressed weight and cut list, with the variation you accept.
Count and packing
Trays or cartons and the count per pack for eggs, chicks per box, birds per crate, and carton weight for dressed chicken.
Freshness and temperature
The oldest egg you accept on delivery, and chilled or frozen for dressed chicken, with the temperature you check on arrival.
Health and vaccination papers
For chicks and live birds, the hatchery's vaccination record for the batch and the farm's current disease status, in writing.
Delivery schedule
Dates and times, daily or weekly. Demand and supply shift around Ramadan and the two Eids, so book those weeks early.
Heat and transport
Heatwaves raised bird losses in 2024 and power cuts add to the strain on farms, so state the route, the travel time and whether you need early-morning delivery.

Licences, import papers and certificates for eggs and poultry

Import papers for table eggs
The NBR import hub lists a DLS import licence under the Animal Quarantine Act 2005, 15 days' notice to the Animal Quarantine Officer, and health and bird-flu-free certificates from the exporting country.
Ministry of Commerce permission
The NBR import hub for FY2024-25 also lists prior permission from the Ministry of Commerce for each consignment of table eggs, under the Import Policy Order 2021-24. Confirm the current position with DLS and the Ministry before opening a letter of credit.
Parent stock chicks
A breeder farm's channel: a DLS no-objection certificate for the importer's breeder farm before the letter of credit, a bird-flu-free exporting country, and 21 days of quarantine after arrival.
Avian influenza status
Table eggs and parent stock chicks may come only from countries free of bird flu, as the NBR import hub lists. Bangladesh reported a farm outbreak to WOAH in March 2025; ask for the farm's current status.
Slaughter and food safety
The Animal Slaughter and Meat Quality Control Act 2011 covers slaughterhouse licensing, and the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority applies the Food Safety Act 2013. Ask the plant for HACCP or ISO 22000.
Halal certificate
For dressed chicken, a halal certificate from the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh, or from the body your own customers accept.

What moves the price of eggs and poultry

  • The market rate on the day: egg and broiler rates move week to week with supply.
  • Season: demand shifts before Ramadan and the Eids, and heat and floods cut supply.
  • Feed cost, since corn is short for part of the year and imported, as the trade reports.
  • Grade, weight band and packing, from loose trays to sealed cartons.
  • Processing and cold chain for dressed chicken, chilled or frozen.
  • Distance, crates and transport timing for live birds and chicks.

Lead times and delivery

We do not quote a standard lead time. Broilers are usually grown on a 30 to 35 day cycle, so a large live-bird order is planned about five weeks ahead. Day old chicks follow the hatchery's setting schedule, and egg volume depends on the size of the layer flocks supplying the order. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum quantity in the quote.

We deliver to hotels, restaurants, processors and farms in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Chattogram and other districts. Eggs come in trays or cartons, chicks in ventilated boxes, live birds in crates, and dressed chicken chilled or frozen. Counts, weights and temperatures are checked against the order on arrival. You receive a delivery note, the health or vaccination papers where they apply and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Licences and food safety certificationThe farm, hatchery or plant licence, and HACCP or ISO 22000 for the plant that processes and packs dressed chicken.
  • Health and vaccination papersThe batch vaccination record for chicks and the farm's current disease status, seen before the order is loaded.
  • Lab reports per lotFor dressed chicken, microbiology and residue tests by an accredited lab on the lot supplied.
  • A visit before the first orderThe farm, hatchery or plant, its cold storage and its packing seen in person.

Questions buyers ask

Can I import table eggs into Bangladesh?

Yes, with papers. The NBR import hub lists a DLS import licence, prior permission from the Ministry of Commerce for the consignment, notice to the Animal Quarantine Officer 15 days before import, and health and bird-flu-free certificates from the exporting country, with limited quantities from bird-flu-free countries only. Confirm the current position with DLS and the Ministry before you open a letter of credit.

Can a trader import parent stock chicks?

No. Parent stock is a breeder farm's channel. The importer needs a DLS no-objection certificate for having its own breeder farm before opening the letter of credit, chicks from a country free of bird flu, and 21 days of quarantine after arrival. The certificate is for having a breeder farm, so a trader without one has no route to import them.

Can you supply Khaki Campbell ducklings?

We source them where hatcheries have stock. Khaki Campbell and Jingding are the improved layer ducks promoted in Bangladesh, and duckling supply has been short in the north. Tell us the count, the hatch date and the district, and we ask the hatchery for the breeder flock and the batch vaccination record.

How do you check day old chicks before delivery?

We ask the hatchery for the batch vaccination record and the breeder flock, check that the boxes are ventilated and counted, and agree the travel time and delivery hour, since heat raises losses. On arrival the count is checked against the order, and any problem is raised with the hatchery the same day.

What should I check in a dressed chicken plant?

Its licence under the Animal Slaughter and Meat Quality Control Act 2011, HACCP or ISO 22000 certification, a halal certificate, cold storage and the cold chain to your door. Modern plants are few, so visit the plant rather than trust the label on the pack, and ask for lab reports on the lot.

How soon will I hear back about eggs and poultry?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
