Buying brown sugar in Bangladesh

Brown sugar is sucrose with molasses in it, either left in by partial refining or added back to white crystals, which is the usual commercial route. Bakeries, biscuit and sauce makers and drinks plants in Bangladesh use it for colour, flavour and a moister crumb. The state mills stopped making brown sugar after the 2021-22 season, so supply now comes from private refiners or imports.

Two bags labelled brown sugar can hold different products at different costs. A brown sugar supplier in Bangladesh should say which one is quoted, so Roptan asks how the sugar is made, compares a sample with your reference and checks the BSTI licence and certificate.

Kinds of brown sugar

Refinery brown sugar

White sugar crystals coated with molasses, the usual commercial kind. The shade follows the amount of molasses added, so choose it when you want a colour you can repeat by grade.

Partly refined brown sugar

Sugar that keeps some of its own molasses because refining stopped early; under the coating the crystals are off-white. Choose it when an unrefined product matters to your recipe or label.

Light and dark grades

Trade grades usually run by number, with 6, 8, 10 and 13 common and a higher number darker. They are a trade convention, not a Bangladesh standard, so back the number with a sample.

Muscovado

The dark, strongly flavoured end of the range, partly refined or unrefined and high in molasses. Choose it where flavour leads, in sauces, dark cakes and drinks.

Free-flowing brown sugar

Soft brown sugar clumps, so some is processed to flow better. Choose it if your plant feeds sugar through hoppers or dosing equipment.

How to specify brown sugar

How it is made
Say whether you want molasses added to refined sugar or a partly refined sugar. The two come from different processes and are not interchangeable in a recipe or a label.
Shade
Name light or dark, or a trade grade number, and send a reference sample, since grade numbers vary between sellers.
Moisture
Brown sugar is moist by nature because molasses draws in water, and it hardens as it dries. State the moisture range you accept and ask for the figure per lot.
Flow
If the sugar runs through hoppers or dosers, say so: standard soft brown sugar clumps and blocks feeders.
Pack and shelf life
Ask for moisture-barrier packing and a stated shelf life. Bangladesh's humid months and dry air-conditioned stores both change brown sugar.
End use
Bakery, sauce or drink. A darker grade gives a moister, chewier bake, so trial a batch before you change grade.

Standards and papers for brown sugar

No separate BDS for brown sugar
BSTI's food standards list has no brown sugar standard of its own. Its sugar section covers refined and cube sugar, cane molasses, gur and the adopted Codex sugars text.
BDS CXS 212:2022, Sugars
BSTI's adoption of the Codex standard that defines soft brown sugar, item 99 on the mandatory CM list. A brown sugar pack is therefore likely to need a CM licence; ask which standard it names.
BDS 139:2008, cane molasses
BSTI's standard for cane molasses. It matters to a brown sugar buyer only for the molasses the refiner adds, so ask which molasses goes into the lot.
Food safety and import papers
For bakery or pharmaceutical use, ask for the packer's HACCP or ISO 22000 certificate. An imported lot usually needs BSTI clearance per consignment.

What moves the price of brown sugar

  • The white sugar underneath: duty and world sugar prices pass into brown sugar too.
  • Molasses: darker grades carry more and sell on flavour; light grades cost nearer to white sugar.
  • Moisture control: barrier packing and dry storage add to the cost of each tonne.
  • Grain: free-flowing grades for hoppers need an extra processing step.

Lead times and delivery

No standard lead time applies. With no state brown sugar left, supply depends on refiners' runs or an import, which waits on shipping and BSTI clearance. A custom shade, a free-flowing grade or your own label adds sampling time, and demand rises before Ramadan. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum quantity in the quote.

Roptan delivers brown sugar in sealed, moisture-barrier packs to bakeries, plants and stores across Bangladesh. Each pack carries the lot number shown on the certificate. You receive the certificate of analysis, a delivery note and a Mushak 6.3 VAT invoice. Keep packs closed in a cool store: brown sugar that dries out turns hard.

What we check for this order

  • Sample against your referenceWe compare a sample with your reference for shade and grain before the order is confirmed.
  • Wash testWe wash a sample: refinery brown sugar shows bright white crystals, partly refined sugar off-white ones, so you get the kind you paid for.
  • Licence and certificateWe check the seller's BSTI licence and the standard it names, and the moisture figure on the lot's certificate.
  • Packs on deliveryWe check that packs are sealed, lot numbers match the certificate and the sugar is still soft, not set hard.

Questions buyers ask

Is brown sugar the same as gur?

No. Gur is a traditional cane or date palm product with its own BSTI standards, BDS 1783:2006 for cane gur and BDS 1784:2006 for date palm gur. Brown sugar is crystal sugar with molasses. Say which you need, since the two suit different recipes.

How can I tell refinery brown sugar from unrefined?

Wash a spoonful in water. Refinery brown sugar, made by coating white sugar with molasses, shows bright white crystals; unrefined or partly refined brown sugar shows off-white ones. If you are paying for an unrefined product, ask for this check on the sample.

Why does brown sugar go hard?

Molasses holds water, so brown sugar stays soft only while it keeps its moisture. In a dry store it loses water and sets; open packs in the humid season take up damp and clump. Ask for barrier packing, keep packs closed and order what you will use within the shelf life.

Does brown sugar need a BSTI mark?

Likely yes, but check. Brown sugar has no BDS of its own; it is defined in the Codex sugars standard that BSTI adopted as BDS CXS 212:2022, which is on the mandatory list. Ask the seller for its CM licence number and the standard named on it.

How soon will I hear back about sugar and salt?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
