Buying icing sugar in Bangladesh

Icing sugar, also sold as powdered or confectioners' sugar, is white sugar milled to a fine powder, with or without an anticaking agent. Bakeries, confectioners and biscuit and dairy plants in Bangladesh use it for icing, coatings, fillings and wherever sugar must dissolve fast. It starts as refined sugar, which here comes from private refiners or imports, so its cost follows white sugar.

An icing sugar order usually goes wrong on what is mixed in, or on damp. An icing sugar supplier in Bangladesh should settle both up front, so Roptan asks for the starch or anticaking agent and its amount in writing, checks a sample for fineness and flow, and confirms the packing suits the humid months.

Kinds of icing sugar

Icing sugar with starch

The common kind: usually 2 to 5 percent corn or potato starch keeps the powder flowing. Choose it for buttercream, dusting and general bakery use where starch is acceptable.

Starch-free icing sugar

Uses a permitted anticaking agent such as tricalcium phosphate instead of starch. Choose it for clear glazes, non-starch fillings or a clean label.

Fine and extra-fine grades

Fineness is sold under trade names such as 6X and 10X, the most used, with more Xs meaning finer. Choose finer powder for smooth icing, and ask for a sieve figure behind the name.

Snow sugar

A non-melting icing sugar for decorating chilled cakes and pastries, usually with glucose, starch and anti-binding agents. Order it only for a dusting that must stay white in the fridge.

Icing dextrose

Finely ground dextrose, not sugar, and a separate product in the Codex sugars standard. An enquiry that only says 'icing' can bring the wrong one, so name sucrose or dextrose.

How to specify icing sugar

Starch or anticaking agent
State whether starch is allowed, its source and the most you accept, or name a starch-free agent. The Codex sugars standard allows starch or a listed agent, not both.
Fineness
Give the grade name plus a sieve residue or particle size, and ask for a sample, since X grades are a trade convention.
Base sugar and colour
Say that it must be milled from white refined sugar, and give the colour limit you would set for granulated sugar.
Moisture and packing
Finer powder takes up more moisture and cakes. Ask for moisture-barrier packing and a re-test date for stock held through the monsoon.
Allergen, halal and label rules
If your plant has an allergen, halal or clean-label rule, ask for the starch source and amount in writing before you order.
Pack size
Bulk bags for a plant, smaller packs for bakeries; say whose label goes on them.

Standards and papers for icing sugar

No separate BDS for icing sugar
BSTI's food list has no icing sugar standard. The powder starts as refined sugar under BDS 138, item 3 on BSTI's mandatory CM list.
BDS CXS 212:2022, Sugars
BSTI's adoption of the Codex text that defines powdered sugar, item 99 on the mandatory list. Icing sugar likely falls under it; ask which BSTI licence covers the milled product.
Starch declaration
The Codex sugars standard requires any starch in powdered sugar to be declared on the label or container with its maximum amount.
Hygiene, contaminants and imports
Ask the packer for HACCP or ISO 22000 and a recent contaminant report. An imported lot usually needs BSTI clearance per consignment.

What moves the price of icing sugar

  • The white sugar it is milled from, so duty and world sugar prices carry through.
  • Milling and the anticaking addition, which granulated sugar does not need.
  • Grade: a finer or starch-free powder costs more per tonne than coarse powder.
  • Pack: printed retail packs cost more per tonne than plain bulk bags.

Lead times and delivery

No standard lead time is promised for icing sugar. Time depends on whether the grade is held in stock or milled to order, on sampling a starch-free or extra-fine grade, on BSTI clearance for an imported lot and on printing your own pack. Sugar demand also rises before Ramadan. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum quantity in the quote.

Roptan delivers icing sugar to bakeries, confectioners and food plants across Bangladesh in sealed packs. Each pack carries the lot number shown on the certificate, and the starch declaration where starch is used. You receive the certificate, a delivery note and a Mushak 6.3 VAT invoice. Packs travel covered and should go into a dry store on arrival.

What we check for this order

  • Starch declaredWe check that the label or certificate declares any starch and its maximum amount, and that it matches your brief.
  • Sample against your referenceWe compare a sample with your reference for fineness and colour before the order is confirmed.
  • Licence and certificateWe check the seller's BSTI licence for the milled product and the moisture figure on the lot's certificate.
  • Flow on deliveryWe open one pack per lot on delivery to check that the powder flows freely and has not caked.

Questions buyers ask

Is icing sugar the same as caster sugar?

No. Caster sugar has larger particles, about half the size of granulated sugar, and no added starch. It dissolves faster than granulated sugar and suits baking and drinks. Icing sugar is milled to a powder and usually carries an anticaking agent. Name the one you need.

Does icing sugar contain starch?

Usually, yes: commercial icing sugar often holds 2 to 5 percent corn or potato starch to stop caking. Starch-free grades use another permitted anticaking agent instead. Under the Codex sugars standard any starch must be declared with its maximum amount, so ask for it in writing.

Why does icing sugar go lumpy?

Fine powder takes up moisture from the air, and damp powder cakes. Bangladesh's humid months make this worse. Ask for moisture-barrier packing, keep opened bags closed and dry, and ask the seller for a re-test date on stock you hold.

Do you supply snow sugar for decorating?

Yes, on request. Snow sugar is a non-melting icing sugar for chilled cakes and pastries, usually made with glucose, starch and anti-binding agents. Tell us the end use and quantity, and we source it from a seller who can show what is in it.

How soon will I hear back about sugar and salt?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
