Buying edible salt in Bangladesh
Edible salt in Bangladesh is, by law, iodised salt: the Iodized Salt Act 2021 says all salt used to prepare human food and animal feed shall be iodised. Hotels, caterers, food processors, bakeries, feed mills and retailers buy it in packets or sacks. Crude salt from the coast is refined and iodised by registered mills, a few of them by vacuum evaporation.
Iodine fades in storage and transport, so a lot can leave the mill within range and arrive short. An edible salt supplier in Bangladesh should prove the iodine for your lot, so Roptan sources only packed, labelled salt from registered mills, checks the dispatch reading and its date, and keeps the lot dry on the way.
How to specify edible salt
- Iodine
- Until a national standard is set, the Act requires 30 to 50 ppm at production and 20 to 50 ppm at retail. Ask for the reading at dispatch and the date of the test.
- Iodine compound
- Ask whether the mill uses iodate or iodide. Iodate is more stable in heat and storage; iodide in an opened pack loses iodine in hot, humid weather.
- Purity and moisture
- Until a national standard is set, the Act's interim figures include sodium chloride of at least 96 percent of weight and water of at most 6.0 percent. Ask the lab to state its basis.
- Anticaking agent
- Table salt usually carries an anticaking agent to stay free-flowing. Ask whether the lot has one, and which.
- Pack and label
- Retail packet, hard pack or sack, and whose label. The label must be one approved by BSTI and must state the iodisation and its quantity.
- Volume and storage
- Give the monthly tonnage and delivery points; a damp store costs iodine and cakes the salt.
Law, standards and tests for edible salt
- Iodized Salt Act 2021
- Act No. 08 of 2021, which repealed the 1989 iodine deficiency law. Every edible salt factory must have its salt tested through an accredited laboratory.
- BDS 1236:2020, Iodized Salt
- BSTI's standard for packaged iodised salt, item 46 on the mandatory CM list. The maker or packer needs a CM licence, and the pack carries the mark.
- Registration under the Act
- Registration lasts two years, and BSCIC may issue it under the existing rules until new rules are made. Ask for the number and its expiry date.
- Test methods
- Iodine by thiosulfate titration, loss on drying at 110 degrees C to ISO 2483 and insoluble matter to ISO 2479, the methods named in the Codex food-grade salt standard.
Lead times and delivery
There is no standard lead time for edible salt. Mills refine stored crude salt through the year, but stock is fullest after the harvest, which in 2025-26 ran from 12 November to 25 May, and tightest before the next one. An own-brand packet needs a BSTI-approved label first, which adds time. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum quantity in the quote.
Roptan delivers edible salt to kitchens, plants and stores across Bangladesh in covered trucks, since rain and humidity cost iodine and cake the salt. Bags should be air-tight HDPE or polypropylene, or lined jute, and never bags that once held fertiliser, cement or chemicals. You receive the lab report for the lot, a delivery note and a Mushak 6.3 VAT invoice.
Questions buyers ask
How much iodine should edible salt have?
Until a national standard is set, the Iodized Salt Act 2021 sets 30 to 50 ppm at production and 20 to 50 ppm at retail. The gap allows for iodine lost in transit and storage, so a bulk buyer should ask for the reading at dispatch and its date.
Can we buy salt in sacks rather than retail packets?
Yes. The Act counts a sack as a packet, so iodised salt can be sold in bulk bags. Codex advice where the climate costs iodine is air-tight bags of 50 kg or less.
Why does every packet show a maximum retail price?
The Act requires it. Producers set the price on the advice of the National Salt Committee, and no edible salt may be sold above the printed maximum. A bulk quote for packed salt therefore sits under that printed price.
Why does iodine fall in stored salt?
Heat, humidity and time all draw it off, faster with iodide than with iodate and faster in an opened pack. Store salt dry and shaded, keep packs closed and use older lots first. If you repack the salt, have it tested again.
How soon will I hear back about sugar and salt?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
