Buying liquid glucose in Bangladesh
Liquid glucose, or glucose syrup, is a thick, purified syrup made by breaking down starch, usually from maize, potato or wheat. Sweet, bakery, ice cream and pharmaceutical syrup makers in Bangladesh use it to sweeten, add body, keep products moist and stop sugar crystallising. Bangladesh exports almost none, so buyers draw on local conversion or imports.
Glucose syrups look much the same in a drum; the difference is in the figures. A liquid glucose supplier in Bangladesh should quote against them, so Roptan asks for dextrose equivalent, solids, ash and sulphite on the certificate, checks them for each lot and confirms the starch source for your allergen file.
How to specify liquid glucose
- Dextrose equivalent (DE)
- DE measures reducing sugars as dextrose on a dry basis and shows how far the starch was converted. State the DE your recipe needs; the usual method is Lane-Eynon titration.
- Solids
- Give a minimum dry matter. A Bangladesh lab can test it by vacuum oven to BDS ISO 1742, and the result should appear on each certificate.
- Conversion route
- Ask whether the lot is acid- or enzyme-converted if colour and flavour matter, as in clear sweets, ice cream and pharmaceutical syrup.
- Starch source
- Maize, potato, wheat or another starch. It affects price and your allergen declaration, so ask for it on the specification.
- Ash and sulphite
- Ask for sulphated ash and sulphur dioxide on the certificate, and state your limits if your plant sets its own.
- Fructose
- Plain glucose syrup holds under 20 percent fructose in the dry state; above that it is a different product with its own customs line.
- Pack
- Drums or bulk. Give the drum size and say whether your plant can take bulk deliveries.
Standards and test methods for liquid glucose
- BDS ISO 1742:2008
- BSTI's adopted method for dry matter in glucose syrups by vacuum oven. It is a test method, not a product specification, and a Bangladesh lab can run it.
- BDS CXS 212:2022, Sugars
- BSTI's adoption of the Codex text that defines glucose syrup, item 99 on the mandatory CM list. No separate BDS product standard was found, so liquid glucose likely falls under it.
- EU Directive 2001/111/EC
- Sets glucose syrup at no less than 70 percent dry matter, a DE of at least 20 and at most 1 percent sulphated ash on dry matter. Amended in 2013 with these figures unchanged.
- Food safety and import papers
- Ask for HACCP or ISO 22000 and a contaminant report. An imported lot usually needs BSTI clearance per consignment.
Lead times and delivery
No standard lead time applies. Supply depends on stock held by local converters and importers, and an imported lot waits on shipping and BSTI clearance. A specific DE, a named starch source, a high-maltose syrup or a dried form can take longer to find and sample. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum quantity in the quote.
Roptan delivers liquid glucose in sealed drums or in bulk to plants across Bangladesh. Each drum carries the lot number shown on the certificate. You receive the certificate with DE and solids, a delivery note and a Mushak 6.3 VAT invoice. Keep drums closed and shaded, and use the oldest lot first.
Questions buyers ask
What DE of liquid glucose do I need?
It depends on the product. A 42 DE syrup is the usual confectioner's reference and about half as sweet as sugar; a higher DE is sweeter. A hard sweet, a syrup and an ice cream mix each need a different DE, so tell us the end use and the DE of the syrup you use now.
Is liquid glucose the same as glucose syrup?
Yes. Liquid glucose is the usual trade name for glucose syrup, a purified syrup made from starch. It is different from dextrose, which is crystalline glucose, and from high-fructose syrups, which sit under their own customs lines.
Why is some liquid glucose darker than others?
Usually because of how it was made. Acid-converted syrups are cheaper but at higher DE tend to look darker and taste bitter from by-products; enzyme conversion gives a lighter syrup at high DE. If colour matters, ask which route the lot used.
Does liquid glucose need a BSTI licence?
Likely, but confirm it. No separate BDS product standard for glucose syrup was found; the Codex text that defines it is adopted as BDS CXS 212:2022, which is on BSTI's mandatory list. Ask the seller for its licence number and the standard it names.
How soon will I hear back about sugar and salt?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
