Buying day old chicks in Bangladesh
Day old chicks are chicks sold within a day of hatching, packed in ventilated boxes and placed straight into a heated shed. Broiler, layer and Sonali farms in Bangladesh buy them by the batch, and breeder farms buy parent stock. The first days decide the batch: a 2024 heatwave killed a quarter of one Savar farm's new chicks while its power was cut.
Most farmers buy chicks on credit through middlemen, with little to go on but the hatchery's word. As a day old chick supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan sources from verified hatcheries, asks for the batch's vaccination record and the breeder flock, checks the boxes and the travel time, and delivers when your shed is warm.
How to specify a day old chick order
- Kind and line
- Broiler, layer, Sonali or parent stock, and the breeder line. Deshi chickens are hatched naturally on the farm, so they are not a hatchery product.
- Count and boxes
- The number of chicks and the chicks per box. Box sizes vary between hatcheries, so agree it in the quote.
- Hatch date and delivery hour
- The day your shed is ready and an early hour in hot weather. Chicks need heat in their first days.
- Vaccination at the hatchery
- Ask whether chicks were vaccinated against Marek's disease at the hatchery and with which vaccine type, not just 'vaccinated'. Most poultry vaccines are imported, so ask how they were stored.
- Breeder flock
- The parent flock and its vaccination record. Chicks carry maternal antibodies from it for a few weeks.
- Loss on arrival
- How many dead or weak chicks you accept on arrival and how a shortfall is made good.
Papers and rules for day old chicks
- WOAH Terrestrial Code, chapter 7.3
- On transport by land: poultry travel in crates that let air through, day old chicks need head room, and journey time is kept to the minimum.
- Import of commercial chicks
- For FY2024-25 the NBR hub listed a DLS import licence, 15 days' notice to the Animal Quarantine Officer and a veterinary health certificate. Check the current rules with DLS.
- Bird flu status
- Bangladesh reported a farm outbreak to WOAH from Jessore district in March 2025, its first since 2018. Ask the hatchery for its current status in writing.
Lead times and delivery
A chicken egg takes about 21 days to hatch, so chicks for your placement day are set about three weeks before. Book early enough for the hatchery to set eggs for you, and earlier around Eid-ul-Azha, when broiler demand drops and then returns. Heat and disease can change a hatch at short notice. Roptan confirms the hatch date and any minimum in the quote.
We deliver to your farm inside Bangladesh in ventilated boxes with room for the chicks' heads, by the shortest route and at an agreed early hour in hot months. Have the shed warm before the chicks arrive. The count, dead and weak chicks are recorded on arrival and raised with the hatchery that day. You receive the batch vaccination record, a delivery note and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Questions buyers ask
Can Roptan import parent stock chicks for me?
No. Parent-stock chicks are a breeder farm's channel: for FY2024-25 the NBR hub listed a DLS no-objection certificate for having a breeder farm before the letter of credit, a bird-flu-free exporting country and 21 days of quarantine. We source chicks from hatcheries in Bangladesh. If you run a breeder farm, ask DLS about the current route.
What should be ready on my farm before chicks arrive?
A clean, heated shed, feed and water in place, and someone to receive and count the boxes. The 2020 sector study links high losses to farm management, including how chicks are received, and says heat is needed in the first days. In hot months ask for an early delivery and plan for power cuts.
How far ahead should I book day old chicks?
At least three weeks, since eggs are set about 21 days before they hatch, and longer for a large batch or a specific line. Around Eid-ul-Azha demand swings, so book early for the weeks after it. Roptan confirms the hatch date in the quote.
Can I buy Deshi chicks?
Deshi chickens are free-ranging birds hatched naturally on village farms, so hatcheries do not sell them as day old chicks. If you want a bird with a local look, Sonali chicks are the hatchery choice: a Rhode Island Red and Fayoumi cross, reared mainly in the north-west around Bogra.
How soon will I hear back about eggs and poultry?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
