Buying hatching eggs in Bangladesh

A hatching egg is a fertilised egg laid by a breeder flock and set in an incubator. Hatcheries in Bangladesh buy them to produce broiler, layer, Sonali and duck chicks. A chicken egg takes about 21 days to hatch. A hatching egg is worth what it hatches, so its age, storage and the health of the breeder flock matter more than its look.

Many breeder farms work informally, and the 2020 sector study found egg storage and transport to be weak points. As a hatching egg supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan sources from verified breeder farms inside the country, sees the flock's vaccination record and the collection date, and delivers in time for your setting day.

Kinds of hatching egg

Broiler parent-stock eggs

Eggs from broiler breeder flocks, set to hatch broiler chicks. Choose them for a broiler hatchery, and size the order by the breeder flock behind it, since each breeder bird lays slowly.

Layer parent-stock eggs

Eggs from layer breeder flocks, set to hatch commercial layer chicks. Choose them if you supply layer farms, and state the line you want.

Sonali hatching eggs

A cross of Rhode Island Red cocks and Fayoumi hens. Choose them for Sonali chicks; Bogra holds a large cluster of Sonali hatcheries.

Duck hatching eggs

Fertile eggs from duck breeder flocks, set to hatch ducklings. Plan the setting day separately: a Campbell-type duck egg takes about 23 to 28 days to hatch.

How to specify hatching eggs

Breed and line
Broiler, layer, Sonali or duck, and the breeder line you want, in the words your chick buyers use.
Count and setting day
The number of eggs and the day you will set them. Delivery is timed to that day, not just to a date on the calendar.
Egg age and storage
The oldest egg you accept and how it was stored. Fresh eggs can usually be held about two weeks under 5 °C.
Shell condition
Clean, sound shells, and whether eggs come unwashed or sanitised. Hatcheries check shells before setting, so say which cracks or dirt you reject.
Breeder flock record
The flock's vaccination and disease testing record. Chicks carry maternal antibodies from the breeder flock for their first few weeks.
Trays and transport
New or sanitised trays and cases, the vehicle and the travel time, especially in the hot, humid months from April to September.

Papers and health rules for hatching eggs

Breeder farm or hatchery registration
Ask whether the seller is registered with DLS. The 2020 sector study counted many informal breeder farms beside the registered ones.
WOAH Terrestrial Code, chapter 10.4
For trade in hatching eggs it asks for a flock free from high pathogenicity bird flu, sanitised or tested eggs, clean packaging, and any bird flu vaccination stated.
Import rules, if the eggs come from abroad
The NBR hub for FY2024-25 listed a DLS import licence, Ministry of Commerce permission, 15 days' quarantine notice and a bird-flu-free certificate. Check the current rules first.
Bird flu record
The sector study counts 43 bird flu events since 2007, and a farm outbreak was reported to WOAH in March 2025. Ask for the breeder flock's current status.

What moves the price of hatching eggs

  • The breeder flock: its breed, age and health record.
  • Chick demand, since day-old chick prices are volatile and demand usually drops before Eid-ul-Azha.
  • Egg age at delivery and the distance from the breeder farm.
  • Cool storage and careful transport in the hot months.
  • A registered breeder farm or hatchery, which usually costs more than an informal seller.

Lead times and delivery

No standard lead time applies. A breeder flock lays slowly, so a large order for one breed is usually planned weeks ahead and may be filled from more than one collection. Eggs set on your day hatch about 21 days later for chicken, so plan back from the date your chick buyers need. Heat can cut supply in summer. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver to your hatchery inside Bangladesh before your setting day, in new or sanitised trays and cases. In the hot months we agree a cool vehicle and the shortest route, since heat harms eggs on the road. On arrival the count, cracked shells and dirty shells are checked against the order. You receive the breeder flock papers, a delivery note and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Breeder farm papersWe check the seller's DLS registration and see the breeder farm before the first order.
  • Flock health recordWe see the breeder flock's vaccination and disease testing record, and its current bird flu status, in writing.
  • Collection date and storageWe check when the eggs were collected and how they were stored against the oldest egg you accept.
  • Count and shells on arrivalWe count the trays and set aside cracked or dirty eggs, since hatcheries check every shell for soundness before setting.

Questions buyers ask

How old can hatching eggs be when they are set?

Set a limit in your order. Freshly laid eggs can usually be held about two weeks when kept under 5 °C, but storage on small farms is often a weak point. Ask for the collection date of each lot and the storage temperature, and we check both before loading.

Can candling prove that eggs are fertile?

Not on its own. Blood vessels seen by candling a few days into incubation suggest an embryo, but a ruptured yolk can look similar. Ask the breeder farm what fertility and hatchability it backs by its own test records, and agree in writing how a poor hatch is handled.

Can I buy Sonali hatching eggs?

Yes. Sonali is a cross of Rhode Island Red cocks and Fayoumi hens, and a large cluster of Sonali hatcheries sits in Bogra. Tell us the count, the setting day and your district, and we source from a breeder farm whose flock papers we have seen.

Can Roptan import hatching eggs for me?

No. We source hatching eggs from breeder farms in Bangladesh. Importing them is a licensed route: for FY2024-25 the NBR hub listed a DLS import licence, Ministry of Commerce permission per consignment, 15 days' notice to the Animal Quarantine Officer and a bird-flu-free certificate. Confirm the current rules with DLS.

How soon will I hear back about eggs and poultry?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
