Buying live broiler chicken in Bangladesh
Live broiler chicken is a fast-growing meat bird sold alive by weight, usually at 30 to 35 days old. Restaurants, caterers, processors and butchers in Bangladesh buy it to slaughter themselves, because many customers want to see a bird is healthy before it is plucked. The 2020 sector study put weekly broiler slaughter at over 10 million birds.
Weights, medicine use and handling vary from farm to farm, and most birds pass through wet markets with no record. As a live broiler chicken supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan sources from verified farms, asks for the flock's medicine record, checks weight and health at loading, and delivers on your days.
How to specify a live broiler order
- Bird and weight range
- Broiler, Sonali or Deshi, with a live weight range in kilograms and how far outside it you accept.
- Count and day
- Birds per delivery, the day and the hour, and whether the order repeats each week.
- Medicine withdrawal
- The farm's last antibiotic date. The sector study notes many farms skip the usual 7 to 10 days off antibiotics before slaughter.
- Crates and load
- Crates that let air through, cleaned before use, and the number of birds per crate recorded for each load.
- Loading hour in summer
- An early catch and a short journey from April to September, when heat raises losses on open farms.
- Where the birds are slaughtered
- Your own authorised slaughter point or a plant. Commercial slaughter without authorisation is barred by law.
Laws and rules for live broilers
- Animal Slaughter and Meat Quality Control Act 2011
- Bars slaughter for commercial sale without authorisation. The 2020 sector study found many farmers and butchers unaware of it, so check where your birds are slaughtered.
- WOAH Terrestrial Code, chapter 7.3
- On transport by land: crates with air flow in all directions, a stocking density estimate for each load, cleaned vehicles and crates, and short journeys.
- Bird flu control
- The national plan from 2007 is to kill and bury all birds in an outbreak; on the Jessore farm in March 2025 the remaining birds were culled. Ask the farm and the local livestock office about any restriction in force.
Lead times and delivery
Broilers grow for usually 30 to 35 days after placement, so a large lot of one weight is usually booked about five weeks ahead, longer if chicks must first be hatched. Birds already near your weight on a farm can come sooner. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.
We deliver to your kitchen, plant or slaughter point inside Bangladesh at an agreed early hour, in crates that let air through and that were cleaned before loading. The count and a sample weight are recorded at loading and checked on arrival, with birds dead on arrival noted. You receive a delivery note with the count and weight, the farm's medicine record and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Questions buyers ask
What weight are live broilers usually sold at?
Market broilers in Bangladesh usually sell at about 1.5 to 1.7 kg live, after a cycle of 30 to 35 days, on 2019 market averages. Sonali birds are lighter, about 0.9 to 1.1 kg. Set the range you want in the order; a heavier bird needs more days on the farm and is booked further ahead.
How do I avoid birds with antibiotic residue?
Ask for the medicine record. The usual practice is no antibiotics for 7 to 10 days before slaughter, but the sector study found many farms do not keep to it. We ask for the last antibiotic date in writing and check it against your withdrawal period before the birds are caught.
Can I slaughter the birds on my own premises?
Only if you are authorised. The Animal Slaughter and Meat Quality Control Act 2011 bars slaughter for commercial sale without authorisation. If you are not, we can deliver the birds to a plant of your choice, or you can buy dressed chicken instead.
Why do live broiler rates fall before Eid-ul-Azha?
Because demand drops: the festival centres on sacrificing cattle and goats, so households buy less broiler in those weeks. Heatwaves push the other way, since losses on farms cut supply. Plan large orders around both.
How soon will I hear back about eggs and poultry?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
