Buying ducks and ducklings in Bangladesh

Ducklings are day-old ducks sold to farms that raise them for eggs or meat; table ducks are grown birds sold live by weight. In Bangladesh many duckling buyers are egg farmers, among them the duck farmers of the flood-prone north. Duck is a small part of poultry meat and is eaten mostly at celebrations, so table duck demand comes in waves.

Duckling supply is thin. In Kurigram the government breeding farm aims at 50,000 ducklings a year while farmers' demand has passed 200,000, a 2025 report found, and many buy in the open market at inflated prices. As a duck and duckling supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan sources from verified hatcheries, checks the breed and the batch papers, and delivers to your district.

Kinds of duck and duckling

Khaki Campbell ducklings

A British layer breed, with the khaki variety dating from 1901, bred for egg farmers at the government duck farm in Kurigram. Choose them for a layer flock, and plan for lay at about seven months.

Jingding ducklings

A Chinese layer breed, bred beside the Khaki Campbell at the government duck farm in Kurigram. Choose them where your local hatchery already supplies the breed.

Native ducklings

Local ducks, which lay fewer eggs than the improved breeds. Choose them where improved ducklings are not on offer, and expect a smaller egg return.

Table ducks

Grown ducks sold live, usually at about 1 to 1.5 kg. White Pekin is a breed raised for meat. Choose them for celebrations and restaurant menus.

How to specify a duckling order

Breed
Khaki Campbell, Jingding or native, named on the order rather than just 'ducklings'.
Count and hatch date
A Campbell duck egg takes about 23 to 28 days to hatch, a week longer than a chicken egg. Date the order from the hatch, not the purchase.
Drakes
For a breeding flock, the number of drakes you want with the ducks.
Breeder flock and vaccination record
The parent flock behind the batch and the batch's vaccination record, in writing.
Boxes and journey
Ventilated boxes or crates with head room, and the shortest journey.
Table ducks
For grown birds, the live weight range in kilograms, the count and the delivery day before your event.

Papers and rules for ducks and ducklings

WOAH Terrestrial Code, chapter 7.3
On transport by land: crates that let air through, head room for day-old birds, and journey time kept to the minimum.
Import of ducks and ducklings
For FY2024-25 the NBR hub listed a DLS import licence, 15 days' notice to the Animal Quarantine Officer and a veterinary health certificate for ducks, and a breeder-farm route for parent stock. Check the current rules with DLS.
Bird flu status
Bangladesh reported a farm outbreak to WOAH in March 2025 and the sector study counts 43 events since 2007. Ask the hatchery for its current status in writing.

What moves the price of ducks and ducklings

  • Scarcity: when the government farm runs short, farmers pay inflated open-market rates.
  • Flood years, which cut flocks in the north and raise demand for restocking.
  • Breed and the breeder flock behind the batch.
  • Count, distance and the journey from the hatchery to your district.
  • For table ducks, live weight and celebration demand.

Lead times and delivery

No standard lead time applies. A duckling needs about 23 to 28 days in the incubator, and Campbell ducks rarely brood their own eggs, so supply depends on hatchery capacity. In the north, batches from the government farm are short, so book well before your season. Layer ducklings then take about seven months to lay. Roptan confirms the hatch date and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver ducklings to your farm inside Bangladesh in ventilated boxes, by the shortest route and at an agreed early hour in hot weather. The count, dead and weak ducklings are recorded on arrival and raised with the hatchery that day. Table ducks travel live in crates. You receive the batch papers, a delivery note and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Breed and hatcheryWe see the hatchery and its breeder ducks before the first order, so the breed you pay for is the one you get.
  • Batch vaccination recordWe ask for the vaccination record of the batch and the hatchery's current bird flu status in writing.
  • Boxes and journeyWe check boxes for air flow and head room and agree the route and travel time before loading.
  • Count on arrivalWe count ducklings against the order and record any dead or weak for the hatchery to make good.

Questions buyers ask

How long until Khaki Campbell ducklings start laying?

Campbell ducks usually mature at about seven months. Add about four weeks of incubation before that, so plan your egg supply from the hatch date, not the day you order. If you want eggs for a set season, book ducklings well ahead and ask the hatchery for its hatch dates.

Why are ducklings hard to get in the north?

Demand runs well ahead of supply. A 2025 report from Kurigram said the government duck breeding farm there aims at 50,000 ducklings a year while farmers' demand has passed 200,000. Many farmers turn to the open market and pay more. We source from verified hatcheries elsewhere and arrange delivery to your district.

Can my ducks hatch their own ducklings?

Rarely, if they are Campbells. Brooding has largely been bred out of the breed in favour of egg laying, so ducklings are usually hatched in incubators or under broody hens. That is why a duckling order depends on a hatchery's setting schedule.

Can you supply ducks for a celebration?

Yes. Tell us the count, the live weight range and the date. Ducks in Bangladesh usually sell at about 1 to 1.5 kg live. Demand rises around celebrations, so book early and we confirm the date in the quote.

How soon will I hear back about eggs and poultry?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
