Buying table eggs in Bangladesh
Table eggs are eggs sold for eating, not for hatching. In Bangladesh they come from commercial layer hens, Sonali hens, backyard birds, ducks and quail. Hotels, caterers, bakeries, hospitals and food processors buy them by the crate or the tray. A 2020 sector study found that about 90 per cent of eggs are sold at wet markets, so graded, dated eggs are a special request.
Most eggs come from small farms, so a steady weekly order is usually pooled from several of them, and size and age can drift between lots. As a table egg supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan agrees the weight band and the age limit with you, sources from verified layer farms, candles a sample and delivers.
How to specify a table egg order
- Bird and shell colour
- Chicken, Sonali, duck or quail, and brown or white only if your customers insist: colour follows the breed and does not change taste.
- Weight band
- Give a band in grams. The EU reference bands for Class A eggs are large 63 to under 73 g, medium 53 to under 63 g, small under 53 g.
- Age at delivery
- State the oldest egg you accept, in days from laying. As an EU reference, 'extra fresh' applies only to day nine, and the durability date falls by day 28.
- Shell and air space
- Clean, uncracked shells. The EU Class A reference allows an air space up to 6 mm on candling; it grows as the egg ages.
- Pack and count
- Farms usually sell to dealers by the crate of 100; shops sell by the dozen or in fours. Name your tray or carton and its count.
- Washed or unwashed, chilled or not
- Say which. Washing can damage the shell, and a cold egg left in warm air gathers condensation that helps bacteria grow.
Standards, papers and references for table eggs
- EU Regulation (EC) No 589/2008
- An EU reference for egg marketing, not Bangladeshi law. It sets the weight bands, air space and freshness dates above; use them if your customers work to them.
- Haugh unit
- Albumen height against egg weight: a higher score means a thicker white and a fresher egg. USDA bands usually quoted: AA 72 or more, A 60 to 71.
- Farm disease status
- Bangladesh reported a bird flu outbreak in Jessore district to WOAH in March 2025, its first farm outbreak since 2018. Ask each farm for its current status in writing.
Lead times and delivery
There is no standard lead time for table eggs. Layer farms collect eggs every day, so a regular order is usually set up as a schedule. A tight weight band, dated packs or a large weekly volume take longer to arrange, because the eggs are pooled from several farms, and heat or floods can cut supply at short notice. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.
We deliver to your kitchen, store or plant inside Bangladesh on agreed days, in trays or cartons. Chilled eggs should stay chilled to your cold room, since a cold egg that warms up gathers moisture on the shell. The count, cracked and soiled shells are checked on arrival. You receive a delivery note and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Questions buyers ask
Are brown eggs better than white eggs?
No. Shell colour follows the breed of hen and is largely cosmetic, with no effect on quality or taste. Hens with red ear lobes lay brown eggs and those with white ear lobes lay white. Ask for one colour only if your customers expect it, since it narrows the farms that can fill the order.
How fresh should table eggs be on delivery?
Set a limit in days from laying and put it in the quote. As an EU reference, eggs may be sold as 'extra fresh' only up to the ninth day after laying, and the durability date falls no later than day 28. We check the farm's laying dates against your limit before loading.
Can you grade eggs by weight?
Yes, if you set the band. Most eggs in Bangladesh are sold mixed through wet markets, so a graded order usually takes several farms to fill. Give the band in grams, for example 53 to under 63 g, the EU medium class, and the share outside it you accept.
Should table eggs be washed?
Say which practice your order follows. In the US eggs are washed and then refrigerated; in Europe they are usually not washed and need no refrigeration. Washing can damage the shell. Once eggs are chilled, keep them chilled, because condensation on a cold shell helps bacteria grow.
How soon will I hear back about eggs and poultry?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
