Buying switches and sockets in Bangladesh

Switches and sockets are the wiring accessories at every wall point: light switches of one to several gangs, socket-outlets, dimmers, bell pushes and the boxes behind them. Developers, contractors, hotels, hospitals and offices in Bangladesh order them against a room schedule, so the count runs to hundreds or thousands of points in one range and one finish.

Accessories that look the same can differ in terminals, contacts, earth connection and test evidence. As a switch and socket supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan turns your room schedule into one bill of items, sources plates, mechanisms and boxes from one range through verified sellers, checks test reports and samples, and delivers by floor.

Kinds of switch and socket

One-way, two-way and intermediate switches

One-way switches control a light from one point; two-way from two points, such as both ends of a stair or corridor; intermediate switches add further points between two-way switches.

Dimmers and bell pushes

Dimmers set lighting level and must suit the lamp load, LED included. Bell pushes are momentary switches for doorbells and call points.

Switches with a pilot light

A small lamp shows when the load is on. Choose them for water heaters, pumps and other loads out of sight.

Square-pin sockets (BS 1363 system)

Three rectangular pins with a fuse in the plug, rated to protect the flexible cord. State whether each point is switched.

Round-pin sockets (BS 546 system)

Three round pins in a triangle, unfused, in several current sizes whose plugs do not fit each other's sockets. State the size at each point.

Weather-protected units

Switches and sockets in an enclosure with a stated IP code, for outdoor walls, kitchens, laundries and splash zones.

How to specify switches and sockets

Function and gangs per point
For each point: one-way, two-way or intermediate, gang count, pilot light, dimmer or bell push. A room-by-room schedule avoids a short count on site.
Rated current
State rated current for switches and sockets. Switches with screwless terminals are limited to 16 A, so heavier loads need screw terminals.
Socket pattern and size
Name the pin system and current size per point, matched to the plugs of the appliances that will be used there.
Earth contact
Class I appliances need an earth contact in plug and socket. It protects only when wired to a real earthing system, a separate design item.
Boxes
Specify flush or surface boxes from the same range as the plates, so screws, depth and fixings match the accessory.
Wet and outdoor points
For monsoon-exposed walls, kitchens and laundries, state an IP code rather than the word weatherproof.
Lamp load on dimmers
Give the lamp type and wattage on each dimmed circuit, so the dimmer quoted is one tested with that kind of lamp load.

Standards, tests and paperwork

IEC 60669-1
Manually operated general-purpose switches for AC up to 440 V and 63 A, indoor or outdoor. The 2017 edition replaced the 1998 one; ask which the test report uses.
BS 1363 and BS 546
The British standards behind the fused square-pin and the round-pin systems. Ask for a test report against the standard your sockets follow.
IEC 60670-1
Boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories. The current European edition dates from 2021, replacing the 2005 one, so ask which edition the box was tested to.
IEC 60529
Sets the IP code for protection against dust, contact and water. The code on the label should match the one in the test report.

What moves the price of switches and sockets

  • Function: two-way, intermediate, dimmer and pilot-light switches are different items from a plain one-way switch.
  • Gang count and plate size, from one gang to four or more on a plate.
  • Rated current and terminal build, screw or screwless.
  • Plate material and finish, and whether the range is modular with matching boxes.
  • Weather protection: IP-coded enclosures for wet and outdoor points.

Lead times and delivery

Plain white ranges in common sizes are catalogue items; special colours or finishes, large quantities in one range and imported ranges usually take longer, since imports wait for port clearance at Chattogram. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum order for each range and finish in the quote.

We deliver to site anywhere in Bangladesh, packed and labelled by floor or flat to match your room schedule, with boxes, plates and mechanisms counted. Your electrical contractor fits them. You receive the test reports for the models supplied, the warranty terms and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Test report for the model quotedWe match the report to the exact switch or socket model and edition, since a mark on the plate alone is weak evidence.
  • Terminals and markingsOn samples we check rated current markings, terminal marking for rigid conductors, and screw or screwless build against the quote.
  • Earth contact and plasticsWe check the earth contact on sockets and the plate and mechanism plastic for cracks, warping and loose fit.
  • One range across the orderWe confirm plates, mechanisms and boxes come from one range and finish, and that spares in the same range are available.

Questions buyers ask

Which socket pattern should I specify?

Match the plugs your occupants will use. The BS 1363 system uses three rectangular pins and a fused plug; the BS 546 system uses three round pins, unfused, in sizes that do not fit each other. Mixing patterns in one building means adaptors, so state the pattern and size per point.

Can I fit a dimmer on LED lights?

Only a dimmer rated for that kind of lamp. The 2017 edition of IEC 60669-1 added a test with self-ballasted lamp loads, which covers LED lamps. Ask for that test in the report, and give us the lamp type and wattage on each dimmed circuit.

Does an earthed socket make a point safe by itself?

No. The earth contact protects only when it is wired back to a working earthing system, which is part of the installation design. Designers usually add a residual-current device at the board for socket circuits as well, so order the boards with the accessories.

How do I keep spares matching years later?

Buy every room from one range and finish, with boxes from the same range, and order spare mechanisms and plates with the main order. We confirm the range and the spares before dispatch.

How soon will I hear back about electrical fittings and installation materials?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
