Buying lightning protection systems in Bangladesh

A lightning protection system intercepts a strike on a structure and carries the current safely to earth. It covers air terminals on the roof, down conductors, earth electrodes and the surge protection inside. Bangladesh recognised lightning as a national disaster in 2016. Developers, factories, hospitals, schools, telecom sites and fuel stores buy systems against a design.

A lightning protection system supplier in Bangladesh may sell parts without the design that decides how many are needed. Roptan works from the designer's risk assessment and drawings, sources tested components from verified sellers, checks their test reports against the design, and delivers to site. The seller or your contractor installs, as agreed in the quote.

Parts of a lightning protection system

Air-termination system

Rods or conductors on the upper points of the roof that intercept the flash. The designer sets their number and position from the risk assessment and protection level.

Down-conductor system

Conductors that carry the current from the air terminals to earth by the most direct route, usually copper or aluminium.

Earth-termination system

Rods, plates or a buried mesh that disperse the current into the ground. It should be designed with the building's electrical earth, not as a separate pit.

Connection components

Clamps, bonding pieces and test joints that join conductors and let the earth be disconnected for testing. They carry the full strike current, so they are tested parts too.

Surge protection measures

Surge protective devices and bonding inside the building that protect electrical and electronic systems. Rods and conductors outside do not protect electronics on their own.

How to specify a lightning protection system

Risk assessment
Ask the designer for a risk assessment under IEC 62305-2. It compares calculated risk with a tolerable limit and decides whether protection is needed.
Protection level
The design states a lightning protection level from I to IV, which drives how many air terminals and down conductors are needed.
Drawings and quantities
Send roof plan, elevations and height, with air terminals, conductor routes, test joints and earth points marked, so every quote covers the same scope.
Conductor material
Copper and its alloys are the usual material, with aluminium also used. Name the material and cross-section from the design for each run.
Earth and bonding
Ask for the lightning, electrical and building earths to be designed and bonded together, with the earthing arrangements of the installation.
Surge protection
List surge protective devices at the main board and at boards serving sensitive equipment, coordinated with the external system.
Site exposure
Monsoon rain, floods and coastal salt air are hard on clamps and joints, so choose materials for roofs, basements and coastal sites.

Standards, tests and paperwork

IEC 62305 series
Protection against lightning, in four parts: general principles, risk management, physical damage, and electrical and electronic systems. Ask the designer for the current edition; 2024 editions exist for all four parts.
IEC 62561-1
Connection components such as clamps, bonding pieces and test joints. Ask for a test report for the clamps supplied.
IEC 62561-2
Conductors and earth electrodes. A 2025 edition exists, so ask for the current edition and which one the report covers.
IEC 62561-7
Earthing enhancing compounds placed around electrodes. Ask for the report if a compound is in the design.
Design report and as-built record
Drawings stating the standard, edition, protection level and risk assessment result, and an as-built drawing with the measured test results after installation.

What moves the price of a lightning protection system

  • Protection level: a higher level usually needs more air terminals and down conductors.
  • Roof size and building height, which set conductor lengths and the number of down conductors.
  • Conductor material and cross-section, copper or aluminium.
  • Earth-termination system: electrode type, depth, number and any enhancing compound.
  • Surge protection devices for the boards, and the testing and documentation after installation.

Lead times and delivery

The design comes first: quantities follow the risk assessment and drawings, so a late design delays supply. After that, time depends on stock of the conductor sizes and clamps, the earth electrodes and surge devices specified, and whether parts are imported, since imports wait for port clearance at Chattogram. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver to site anywhere in Bangladesh, with parts counted against the design drawings. The seller installs or supervises, or your electrical contractor installs, as agreed in the quote. You receive the component test reports, the design and as-built drawings, the earth test record after installation and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Design before partsWe ask for the risk assessment, protection level and drawings before quoting, so quantities come from the design, not a guess.
  • Component test reportsWe match IEC 62561 reports to the clamps, conductors, electrodes and compounds quoted, and check the edition each covers.
  • Material and section on samplesWe check conductor material and cross-section on samples against the design, since a quick look cannot confirm either.
  • No prevention claimsWe flag any product sold as preventing strikes; IEC 62305-1 states that no device can prevent a lightning discharge.

Questions buyers ask

Can any device stop lightning from striking my building?

No. IEC 62305-1 states that no device or method can modify natural weather to prevent lightning discharges. A lightning protection system intercepts the strike and carries it safely to earth. Treat any product sold as preventing strikes with caution and ask for a design to the IEC 62305 series.

How do I know whether my building needs protection?

Ask for a risk assessment under IEC 62305-2. It sets a tolerable level of risk and checks loss of life, public services, cultural heritage and economic loss against it, then picks the protection level that keeps risk below that limit. Your designer also checks the building code clauses for the building type.

Will roof rods protect our computers and equipment?

Not on their own. The external system protects the structure. Electrical and electronic systems inside need surge protection measures, covered by IEC 62305-4: surge protective devices, bonding and routing designed with the earthing. Order the surge devices with the external parts.

Which edition of the standards should the design use?

Ask for the current editions. The four parts of IEC 62305 have 2024 editions, and IEC 62561-2 for conductors and earth electrodes has a 2025 edition. The design report and every component test report should name the edition they follow.

How soon will I hear back about electrical fittings and installation materials?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
