Buying busbar trunking systems in Bangladesh

A busbar trunking system, also called a busway or bus duct, is a metal or cast-resin enclosure holding insulated copper or aluminium bars that carry a large current. It replaces heavy power cables. Developers, hospitals, hotels and factories in Bangladesh use it to take power from the main switchboard up a riser or along a production floor.

BBT is built to a drawing, a rating and a route, and a mistake in any of them shows only on site. As a busbar trunking system supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan turns your load schedule into one specification, sources from verified sellers, checks the verification reports for the run and the tap-off units, and delivers to site.

Kinds of busbar trunking

Feeder busway

Links two pieces of equipment, such as a transformer and the main switchgear, with no outlets along the way. Choose it for short, heavy links in substations and plant rooms.

Plug-in busway

Tap-off units with switches or fuses mount anywhere along the run and can be moved later. Choose it for rising mains in tall buildings and for factory lines where loads move.

Sandwich (compact) busway

The bars are insulated and pressed together rather than spaced with air gaps, giving a smaller run. Choose it where riser space is tight.

Air-insulated busway

The bars are held apart with air gaps inside the enclosure. Ask the seller how the rating and short-circuit strength compare with a compact design at the same current.

Low-impedance and trolley busway

Low-impedance busway keeps bars close to cut voltage drop on long runs; trolley busway feeds moving equipment such as cranes and hoists through a sliding collector.

How to specify a busbar trunking system

Rated current and conductors
State rated current in amperes, copper or aluminium bars, and the number of conductors, including neutral and earth size. Aluminium is lighter but usually needs a larger section for the same rating.
Short-circuit rating
Give the prospective fault current at the switchboard. Fault currents load bars and supports far beyond normal current, so the run's short-circuit rating must match it.
Supply
Rate the system for 50 Hz three-phase supply, and ask that test certificates are stated at that frequency.
Route and fittings
Send the route with straight lengths, elbows, tees, expansion units, wall and floor crossings and supports. Long runs need room for thermal expansion.
Tap-off units
List each floor or machine take-off: rating, fuse or circuit breaker, and position along the run.
Enclosure and IP code
State an IP code under IEC 60529 for the enclosure and joints, higher for basements, wet plant rooms or outdoor runs in monsoon rain.
Fire barriers
Mark every fire-rated floor and wall the run crosses, since each crossing needs fire-stopping around the duct. Ask how the seller seals it.

Standards, tests and paperwork

IEC 61439-6
The product standard for busbar trunking systems up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC. A revision is in draft, so ask which edition the verification report refers to.
IEC 61439-1
General rules for low-voltage assemblies that Part 6 builds on: service conditions, construction and design verification.
Design verification report
IEC 61439 treats the run as one verified system. Ask for the report for the exact range, rated current and short-circuit rating, plus the tap-off units.
IEC 60529
Classes enclosure protection against dust, contact and water as an IP code. The tested code should match the one in your specification.

What moves the price of busbar trunking

  • Conductor material and cross-section: copper or aluminium, sized for the rated current.
  • Number of conductors, and the size of the neutral and earth.
  • Enclosure material and IP code, with sealed joints for wet or outdoor runs.
  • Number and type of tap-off units, with fuses or circuit breakers.
  • Route length, elbows, fire barriers and supports.

Lead times and delivery

Busbar trunking is usually built to the drawing, so time depends on how quickly the route and rating are fixed, the number of special fittings and tap-off units, and whether the system is imported, since imports wait for port clearance at Chattogram. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum order in the quote.

We deliver to site anywhere in Bangladesh, with lengths and fittings marked to the route drawing. The seller installs or supervises, or your contractor installs, as agreed in the quote. You receive the route drawing, verification reports for the run and tap-off units, the warranty and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Verification report against the quoteWe match the IEC 61439-6 report to the range, rated current, short-circuit rating and edition quoted, and check one exists for the tap-off units.
  • Conductor and sectionWe check conductor material and cross-section on a sample length against the quote, since copper and aluminium runs look alike outside.
  • Route and fittings countWe check the route drawing against your riser or floor plan and count lengths, elbows, expansion units and fire-stop items before dispatch.
  • IP code and jointsWe confirm the IP code tested matches the specification and that joint covers and seals for wet areas are in the order.

Questions buyers ask

Copper or aluminium busbar trunking: which should I choose?

Both carry the rated current when sized for it. Aluminium is lighter but usually needs a larger section, so the run is bigger; copper usually gives a smaller run for the same rating. Send the riser space and the load schedule, and we quote both where the seller offers both.

Is a busbar trunking system the same as a distribution board?

No. A distribution board splits the supply into circuits at one place. A plug-in busway lets new circuits branch off anywhere along its length, which is why it suits risers and factory floors where loads are added or moved.

Does cable trunking fall under the same standard?

No. IEC 61439-6 covers busbar trunking only. Cable trunking and ducting, which hold cables, fall under the IEC 61084 series. Devices fitted in a tap-off unit, such as fuse switches, follow their own product standards.

What should the riser contractor allow for?

Fire-stopping at every fire-rated floor and wall the run crosses, supports rigid enough for the weight and fault forces, and room for thermal expansion on long runs. Send the riser drawing early so these are in the route and the price.

How soon will I hear back about electrical fittings and installation materials?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
