Buying soybean oil cake in Bangladesh
Soybean oil cake is what remains of the bean once its oil is taken out. Most is solvent-extracted meal with typically under 2% oil; expeller cake keeps more than 3%. In Bangladesh it is a key protein in poultry, fish and cattle feed, and its export was briefly banned in 2021 to hold feed prices down. Importers abroad buy it too.
Quotes for one meal look far apart when one states protein as fed and another on dry matter. A soybean oil cake supplier in Bangladesh should sell on a stated basis and a lot test; Roptan sources from licensed crushers, compares quotes on your basis, tests each lot and delivers it.
How to brief a soybean oil cake supplier in Bangladesh
- Protein and its basis
- Give crude protein as a minimum, as fed or on dry matter. Meal averages about 88% dry matter, so type 48 meal reads about 54% on a dry basis.
- Moisture and fibre, by rule set
- The Animal Feed Rules 2013 allow 12% moisture and 7.5% fibre in soybean meal; the Fish Feed Rules 2024 allow 14% and 10%. Write your own limits and name the rules.
- Heat treatment
- Ask for urease activity and KOH protein solubility per lot. Well-processed meal usually shows a urease index of 0.3 pH unit change or below and 70% to 85% solubility.
- Oil in expeller cake
- State the oil range you accept: expeller cake holds over 3% and screw-press cake can exceed 5%.
- Sacks, dates and GM status
- Meal usually moves in 50 kg sacks; ask for the lot number and production date on each. For non-GM meal, proof usually rests on the papers for the beans crushed.
Rules, tests and papers for soybean meal
- Fish Feed and Animal Feed Act 2010
- Anyone making, importing, exporting or selling feed needs a one-year licence; the Department of Livestock Services issues it for animal feed.
- Animal Feed Rules 2013 and Fish Feed Rules 2024
- Both set a 40% protein floor for soybean meal, a legal minimum well under the 47% to 49% of high-protein meal.
- ISO 771:2021 and ISO 734:2023
- Moisture and oil methods for oilseed meals; ISO 6496 and ISO 6492 exclude oilseed residues, so they do not fit cake.
- ISO 5506:2018 and ISO 14902:2001
- Urease and trypsin inhibitor activity of soya products: the lab tests that show whether meal was heated enough.
Lead times and delivery
Timing depends on whether the crusher has meal in stock or must crush a fresh batch, on the lab test and on rain, which slows loading; a lot that fails urease or aflatoxin must be replaced. Roptan confirms the loading date and any minimum in the quote.
Within Bangladesh the meal goes by covered truck to your mill or store, with the lot's lab report, the weighbridge slip and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Inspectors may sample feed at any stage of sale, so we keep a sealed sample from your lot.
Buying soybean oil cake for export
Soybean cake is freely exportable: the Export Policy 2024-2027 lists it as neither prohibited nor conditional, and the 2021 export ban was lifted in February 2022, at first case by case. It ships under HS 2304; the exporter needs a feed licence covering export and an ERC. We quote FOB Chattogram with the lot's certificate of analysis; send your market's limits, such as the EU's under Directive 2002/32/EC.
Questions buyers ask
Is 48% soybean meal the same as 54% soybean meal?
Often it is. Meal holds about 12% water as fed, so 48% protein as fed reads about 54% on dry matter. Ask every seller to state the basis, or one quote can look six points richer than another for the same meal.
Which aflatoxin limit should I set for soybean meal?
Set it for your end use. The Animal Feed Rules 2013 allow up to 50 ppb in soybean meal, but finished fish feed is held to 20 ppb aflatoxin B1 under the Fish Feed Rules 2024. A fish feed mill usually needs meal well inside that.
Is expeller cake safe without a urease test?
Not by default. Solvent extraction and toasting remove the antinutritional factors; pressing without high temperature may not, though extruding the beans first can help. Ask for a urease or trypsin inhibitor result measured on the expeller cake lot you are buying.
Can a feed inspector take samples from my stock?
Yes. Under the Animal Feed Rules 2013 an officer takes at least three samples of at least 500 g from intact packs and leaves one with the owner; the lab reports within 20 working days, and feed found unfit is confiscated.
How soon will I hear back about animal feed and by-products?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
