Buying bone and horn in Bangladesh

Bone and horn are by-products of cattle and buffalo slaughter. Bone is sold raw, degreased, steamed, acid-treated as ossein, or ground into meal; horn and hoof unworked or simply prepared. Gelatine makers, feed mills and fertiliser makers use bone. The customs heading changes with each step, and so do the import rules.

Import rules for bone turn on two questions: what is left on it, and how it was treated. A bone and horn supplier in Bangladesh should answer both in writing. Roptan sources domestic cattle and buffalo material, writes treatment and cleanliness into the order, checks each lot and arranges the health certificate.

Kinds of bone and horn

Raw and degreased bone

Bone and horn cores, unworked or defatted, under HS 0506. Choose it as raw material; the US sends such bone under customs seal to an approved plant.

Ossein

Bone treated with acid, the stage before gelatine, listed first under HS 0506. Choose it if you make gelatine and want the acid stage done before shipment.

Steamed bone meal

Bone heated under steam pressure and ground, for feed or fertiliser: it supplies calcium and phosphorus to poultry and other monogastric livestock. Choose it when your market asks for heat-treated bone.

Meat and bone meal

A protein feed ingredient in both Bangladesh feed rule sets. Choose it for poultry or fish feed; most countries bar it from ruminant feed because of BSE.

Horn and hoof

A keratin sheath over a bone core. Unworked horn and hoof fall under HS 0507 and worked horn articles under HS 9601; choose by your use and confirm the code.

How to brief a bone and horn supplier in Bangladesh

Product and processing
Raw, degreased, steamed, acid-treated or ground, and the HS heading: 0506 for bone and horn cores, 0507 for horn and hoof.
Species and origin
Domestic cattle and buffalo only. Wild animal parts need a licence to export, and the slaughter source decides the veterinary papers.
Cleanliness
Clean, dry and free from undried hide, flesh and sinew: the test US rules apply to bones, horns and hoofs.
Heat or disinfection
Steam pressure, time and temperature for bone meal; for hoofs, the disinfection method, such as 20 minutes in boiling water or 30 minutes of dry heat at 82.2°C.
Size, moisture and fat
Set them from your use, whether gelatine, meal, char or craft, and approve a sample of the size range first.
Meal analysis
For bone meal or meat and bone meal: protein, moisture and Salmonella, and the Bangladesh rule set the lot must meet.

Import rules and Bangladesh feed rules

US 9 CFR Part 95
Covers bones, horns, hoofs and their meals. Disinfected hoofs may enter with an official certificate; other bone, horn and hoof goes under customs seal to an approved plant.
EU Regulations 1069/2009 and 142/2011
Animal by-products enter only from authorised third countries, with Annex XV certificates and establishments entered in TRACES. Check Bangladesh's listing for your product first.
Animal Feed Rules 2013 and Fish Feed Rules 2024
Meat and bone meal: 45% protein minimum and 10% moisture maximum under the animal feed rules, Salmonella negative; 40% and 12% under the fish feed rules.
Animals and Animal Products Quarantine Act 2005
Bone is an animal product under the Act; export health certificates are issued through the Department of Livestock Services.

What to match when comparing bone and horn quotes

  • Processing: raw bone, degreased bone, ossein and steamed meal are different goods at different stages.
  • Cleanliness: bone free of hide, flesh and sinew takes more preparation than bone as collected.
  • Treatment and papers: steaming, disinfection and the certificate your market requires.
  • Species, size range, moisture and fat limits written into the order.

Lead times and delivery

Timing depends on the processing: raw bone can go once cleaned and dried, while steaming, acid treatment or grinding add steps. The health certificate, and any listing your market requires, come first. Roptan confirms the shipment date and the minimum quantity in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver bone meal and meat and bone meal to feed mills by covered truck, with the lot's analysis and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Fish feed mills must keep a source record for every lot, so we pass on each lot's origin.

Buying bone and horn for export

Bone, horn and hoof from domestic animals are freely exportable under the Export Policy 2024-2027; products from a human skeleton are prohibited, and wild animal parts need a licence. EPB lists no export line for bone or horn, so treat your order as a first shipment: your market's import listing and certificate model come before the quote. The exporter needs an ERC, and the health certificate goes through the Department of Livestock Services. We quote FOB Chattogram once those papers are confirmed.

Questions buyers ask

Which HS code does bone or horn ship under?

Bones and horn cores, unworked, defatted, acid-treated or degelatinised, go under HS 0506, with ossein as its first subheading. Horns and hooves, unworked or simply prepared, go under 0507. Worked horn and bone articles fall under 9601. Your customs broker confirms the full line.

What does the US require for bone meal?

Steamed bone meal enters without further restriction if heated under at least 20 pounds of steam pressure for at least an hour, at 121°C or more, and free of bone pieces, hide, flesh and sinew. Other bone meal is not eligible for entry.

Can bone meal go into fish feed in Bangladesh?

Yes, within limits. The Fish Feed Rules 2024 allow bone meal, at 10% to 20% protein, up to 5% of a fish or shrimp feed, and feed-grade meat and bone meal up to 25%. Mills must store meat and bone meal apart from fish feed.

Why do the two rule sets differ on meat and bone meal?

The Animal Feed Rules 2013 ask for 45% protein and give phosphorus as a maximum; the Fish Feed Rules 2024 ask for 40% protein and give phosphorus as a minimum. A seller should state which set the lot meets, and you test against that one.

How soon will I hear back about animal feed and by-products?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
