Buying fish and poultry feed in Bangladesh

Compound feed is mixed to a formula for one species at one stage, such as a broiler starter or a tilapia grower. Legal nutrient minimums for each sit in the Animal Feed Rules 2013 for poultry and the Fish Feed Rules 2024, which replaced the 2011 rules, for fish and prawn. Farms and dealers buy it by the bag or the tonne.

Courts have ordered factories putting tannery waste into feed to shut, and feed can be made under contract at another licensed mill. A fish and poultry feed supplier in Bangladesh should show whose licence is on the sack. Roptan sources from licensed mills, checks the label, has a lot tested and delivers it.

Kinds of fish and poultry feed

Broiler starter and finisher

Starter at least 21.2% crude protein on dry matter and finisher 18.7%, each with at least 2,800 kcal/kg metabolisable energy. Choose the stage by bird age.

Layer and pullet feed

Starter to 5 weeks, grower to 10, developer to 20, then layer feed with at least 17.2% protein to 42 weeks and 16.2% after. Choose each by flock age.

Carp, pangas and tilapia feed

Five grades from nursery to finisher: tilapia and pangas start at 30% protein, carp at 28%, falling to 21% to 24%. Usually extruded to float or sink slowly.

Shing, magur, koi and prawn feed

Higher-protein grades: shing, magur and koi from 35% at nursery to 32% at finisher, freshwater prawn from 35% to 28%. Choose them only for these species.

How to brief a fish and poultry feed supplier in Bangladesh

Species, stage and standard
Name the bird or fish, the stage and the schedule to meet, such as Schedule 8 of the Fish Feed Rules 2024 for a tilapia grower.
Protein, energy and moisture
The schedules work on dry matter, with moisture at most 10% for poultry and 12% for fish. State crude protein, fat and, for poultry, energy in kcal/kg.
Form and size
Mash, crumble or pellet; for fish, floating or slow-sinking extruded pellets. Diameters usually run from under 1 mm to over 1 cm, so give one for each stage.
No banned additives
No antibiotics, growth hormones, steroids or pesticides, which the Feed Act bans, and nothing on the fish rules' banned list.
Bags and label
Usually 25 kg bags, one-tonne bags or bulk. The label must show the lot number, species, ingredients with percentages, and production and expiry dates.

Licences, limits and banned substances

Fish Feed and Animal Feed Act 2010
Makers, importers, exporters and sellers need a one-year licence: from the Department of Livestock Services for animal feed, the Department of Fisheries for fish feed.
Fish Feed Rules 2024, Schedule 12
Acceptable levels in fish feed include chromium 5 mg/kg, lead 5 mg/kg, cadmium 1 mg/kg and aflatoxin B1 0.020 mg/kg.
Fish Feed Rules 2024, Schedule 11
Substances banned from fish feed and its ingredients, among them chloramphenicol, nitrofurans and malachite green.
Tannery waste: sections 12 and 14, and the courts
The Act bans harmful substances in feed. In 2011 the High Court ordered factories putting tannery waste into poultry and fish feed to shut, and the Supreme Court upheld the order in 2017.

What moves the price of fish and poultry feed

  • Raw materials, usually most of a quality feed's cost, led by maize, soybean meal and de-oiled rice bran.
  • The exchange rate, which moves the cost of imported ingredients.
  • Protein level: a 35% prawn feed usually needs more protein meal per tonne than a 21% carp finisher.
  • Taxes and duties on feed inputs and feed companies, which budgets both raise and cut.
  • Bag size, monthly tonnage and distance from mill to farm.

Lead times and delivery

A standard formula is quicker to supply than a custom one or your own brand, which needs a registered contract. If a fish feed needs an imported ingredient, the mill applies for an import no-objection certificate at least 15 working days before opening the letter of credit. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum in the quote.

We deliver by covered truck to farms, hatcheries and dealer depots across Bangladesh, with the lot's test results and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Check the label against your order, keep bags dry and off the floor, and use the oldest lot first.

Buying fish and poultry feed for export

Poultry and fish feed are freely exportable under the Export Policy 2024-2027 and ship under HS 2309; the exporting mill needs a feed licence covering export and an ERC, and for fish feed an export no-objection certificate and a health certificate from the Department of Fisheries. The EU registers third-country feed establishments and limits aflatoxin, heavy metals and dioxin in feed. We quote FOB Chattogram with the papers your market names.

What we check for this order

  • Whose licence is on the sackFor contract-made feed we check the sack names the licence holder and the mill owner, as the fish feed rules require.
  • Label against your orderSpecies, stage, ingredients with percentages, lot number and dates checked on the sacks before loading.
  • Chromium and aflatoxinChromium and aflatoxin B1 tested on a sample of the lot, against the fish feed limits of 5 mg/kg and 0.020 mg/kg.
  • Storage at the millIngredients on racks off the floor, first in, first out, with meat and bone meal kept apart from fish feed.

Questions buyers ask

What protein should tilapia feed have?

The Fish Feed Rules 2024 set minimums on a dry basis of 30% at nursery, 28% at starter 1 to 2, 27% at starter 3, 25% at grower and 24% at finisher. Labels may sit above these; compare them on the same basis.

How do I know feed is free of tannery waste?

Tannery waste carries chromium, so have the lot tested: fish feed may hold no more than 5 mg/kg under the 2024 rules. Buy from a licensed mill named on the sack, and keep a sealed sample from each lot until it is used.

Can a mill make feed under our own brand?

Yes, under contract. The Fish Feed Rules 2024 let a licence holder have feed made by another licensed mill under a registered contract. It sells under the holder's brand, with the mill owner named on the sack, so you need your own licence.

Can feed contain antibiotics or growth promoters?

No. The Feed Act bans antibiotics, growth hormones, steroids and pesticides in feed, and the fish feed rules ban further substances such as chloramphenicol, nitrofurans and malachite green. Write this into your order and ask the mill to confirm it.

How soon will I hear back about animal feed and by-products?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
